Yesterday was our 5th year working as a Design Engineer.
And some of my batchmates said that this will be the beginning.
The starting line in looking for a new job.
I must say I risked 5 years of my life working here.
Well in fact I could escape here earlier than now but I chose to stay up to this line. It's such a burden having a 10-year contract and the company won't allow you to apply to another company yet they won't give you any reasons to stay.
So, since most of the jobs abroad requires a 5-year experience, I chose to stay.
And this will be the beginning of my job hunt.
I am looking forward to leaving this company soon.
So, how's your job recently? Did you stay for longer years?
Are you happy with them or just waiting for another opportunity?
Would love to hear your working experience and stories.

Hi Beli- I am with you however; this is not the case with our corporate sector, we are bound for 1-2 or three months at the most from either side. A formal notice and you are free to leave or a pink rose bud with cheque for three months does the trick. As for me, I changed fife times during my 25+ years’ long carrier in marketing and project management. The main reason is job-satisfaction and monotony that effects adversely. Once you feel too robotic type with your work schedule, there is nothing much to enjoy that particular job. My last job that was longest, where I stayed for nine long years as marketing head for a telecommunication company and resigned in the end when I saw the product was no more in the demand. That was in 2009, and never tried for another since. I am happy as an online worker. The income has come down from what it used to be but ultimate mental satisfaction and fun part is intact. I wish you all the best for your future venture. Happy Diwali to you.

You seem to have a very nice profession in your past life.
I cannot imagine myself finishing my contract here. There's no room for improvement here. The reason we are working is for us to have an income and when the company offers nothing, I have no choice but to leave. You see, I lasted here for five years without having a big savings. I don't spend too much for everything and yet my account was still at it's minimum.
This will be the beginning.
We don't celebrate Diwali here.
Anyways, Happy Diwali to you too and to all the other Indian friends here.

hi adnileb
This is definitely sad and unhealthy - the 10 year long contract which seems to be pro-organization and not pro-employee. Here as dear praaji mentioned above, we do mostly have a 3 month notice period (and with many it is just a month) from either side to quit.
But that said, shipping companies are a different lot altogether. They need long term people but this should also be a favorable thing for the employees so that they stay back and committed.
Personally, I never stuck with any organization for more than two years. I did always need to move on as I didnt find long term commitments interesting (professionally of course). See, I was in a totally different field - teaching computers and specially programming. As I always loved challenges, I hoped on to positions and organizations where I could get something new to teach and if my last organization provided me with new technologies, I stayed longer. If not, I had to quit.
And... today is Diwali here. So here is my wishes for a Happy and Prosperous Diwali to you and family
ps.: the laddoo hoarding (err...storing...) when should I start that?

So much unhealthy. If the contract was just 5 years, I would be so much delighted.
The first batch, who were trained in Korea, only had 5 year-contract. So last January, they’re finally free. We, the second batch and also the succeeding batches all have a 10-year contract. A lot of them already left us. I know soon, I will leave them too.
I admire your profession because I hate programming very much. When I was in college, we have a subject computer programming. I never loved it. How I wish I could be on different places switching jobs. I want to stick with this profession but I want it to be in other company. and if possible, I want to work abroad.
Anyways, loved your “hoarding” term. Hahahaha!
I was thinking what if you really hoarded those laddoos and I wasn’t able to go there. Oh my…

...we have a subject computer programming. I never loved it...
maybe becuase I wasnt around to teach there at your place
I do hope that you would find some great organization abroad. Reason is that you already have two +points on your resume now - you have 5 years of experience and you have stuck to one organization for so long. As I mentioned above, the shipping Organizations would definitely see this as a positive sign - you can be dependable for your position
Laddoos - what are you more worried about? The Laddos being left uneaten or me having no place to stay as the house gets flooded with laddoos?

Consider them both good and bad.
Good - because I have a stable job.
Bad - because it cannot sustain my needs and my future,
no career advancement,
not enough benefits,
and many more.
So, I guess it's more of a bad news.
Anyways, you don't have a fix job. that's a bad news. but still good news since you can still find a job.
Well, I just hope you can find a stable job.

I have worked for 10 years at my brother in law's pharmacy. I loved my job that it really never was a problem even if I only have 3 days off in a year. But having done so much, have sacrificed my time for my family and never get acknowledged for all the work I have done (including sleepless nights just to make the books of account for the pharmacy and the dreaded inventory annually). I chose to give up. There was no sense for me to stay. I wasn't enjoying. I wasn't growing as a person. But I just think I grew old being in that kind of work.

The reason why I loved that business was because I was the one who started it. My brother in law was still in Med School when we opened the pharmacy, so I was practically running it. Plus , my frustration was to become a doctor. So being surrounded with all the things such as medicines and all, it makes me feel closer to my lost dream.

Plus! You grew old there.
Knowing that it was your in-law's pharmacy, how could they not give you any consideration at all?
Anyways, you made a good decision but so sad it took you 10 years to realize that you should leave. But that's part of life, at least, you enjoyed a part of being there.

We have been folled and we're so stupid to be fooled I guess.
Actually, prior to signing the contract, we had a 2-month training and you can choose to just leave or sign the contract.
Since they said so many beautiful things that await us, we signed and took the risk. And from there, our life became a misery.

Many of my co-workers already left. The company cannot do something about it. But me, I'm still here. soon I will be leaving too. We had a celebration awhile ago and one of the bosses said, "don't leave me".. The other one said, "stay with me forever"
They have no idea of what we're planning for the future. They're thanking us for being there with them for 5 years.

How bad is your previous employer to let you go without any reason. Maybe if they didn't fire you, you wouldn't fell. Just like destiny, I think.
So, now, you only have mylot as your work?
Or do you have any other sites?
Did you work here already even though you're working in the library? Or you just worked here after getting fired?
Don't mind the typos, I kind of understand them a bit.

I really have no problems with my company when it comes to compensation.. and i am in my 5th year now.. its been that fast! but then again i am also looking for a new job because i could not see the growth i want.. honestly. financially wise it pays quite good with all out 13th month to 19th month pay lol but i am seeking more i guess..
@adnileb (5276)

WOW! You still have 19th month pay?
If I work there in your place, I might not leave at all. Well, you said the compensation is good.
Does your 13th month pay computed based on your worked days or they gave it in full amount? Our company deducts our absences for the whole year so when somebody has many absences, he will be having a smaller 13th pay. And there are no bonuses given here. See the financial instability?
No matter how easy the job is for me, if I don't get what I need here, there's no sense being here for another 5 years.

I can relate to your feeling right now.
A couple of years ago, I did a job hunting for a similar reason. The company I was working with didn't give reasons for me to stay there. I found a good job with almost twice salary that I got at the time. I was elastic. But then, I had a thinking, it couldn't be this easy. So, I started to find information on the promising company through friends before I resigned from my current job. I got information that the owner of the company was in a deep debt and that his project didn't go anywhere (stuck) for almost two years at the time. Wow, I began to think again my choices. At the end I chose to stay in my current company and let go of the promising one.
A year later (last year) I heard that the company collapsed and I kind of thankful to my good luck that I was saved from getting jobless.
I am now still with the same company who can only demands without giving really good reward to do your job well. I am still looking for another job, but I am now wary with private companies who offers much more that what I got now. If ever there is a decent job with better payment and benefits and the company is legit...

Oh, that's a blessing that you've thought to search for its background.
So until now you're still there? How many years have you been there?
How I wish I could go to some company who offers twice my salary here.
I know one place for that and that's abroad. Some of my colleagues are already gone and have a decent, good paying jobs abroad.
I want to have that kind of job too. I guess it's not yet the time for now because noone's calling me.

Hi adnileb,
One way it is good that for 10 years you have the job in your hands. But it has the negative points too. I can understand that it is not easy as the routine / monotonous job at times kill us. Read your contract again, in case it has some clause of leaving before the contract period of 10 years. Check if there is any mention of re-assignments/ re-location etc so you might ask them accordingly.
Always remember whatever we do/work is never a waste and you are a contributor to your company. Why not ask the company to give you some benefits/ perks as a token of motivation???
I am in my 12th year working for a media group and i too have had ups & downs. But i have learnt a lot from this (still expose new options) and am thankful that management has/ is seeing me as one of their potential employee at the moment. Of course in a private job, we have no guarantee of tomorrow. I always look for more and new opportunity but the problem in my place thre are limited corporate companies only and these days getting a job is not an easy one here.
However, i would again think of starting something of my own or something additional as added income and at a later stage i can give my full time to my own project.

Aside from the monotonous tasks, staffs aren't rewarded properly of their work. The administration is a
There are lots of us here, maybe almost 200 and they always practice cost cutting on us. They get about a billion for their profit but they don't even care to give us a bonus. Can you imagine that everytime a ship is delivered, they aren't giving us any bonus or tips. Okay, sorry if I feel like ranting here.
Your job seems to be very good since you're on your 12th year.
And besides, you're the potential employee for them so it's much better.
But if you're thinking of having your own business then it's good. It's always good to be your own boss.

Hi adnileb, wow...that is a long contract burden you have to bear. 10 years is not short. Well, i wish you all the best to find a suitable job that you prefer. =)
As for me, i am doing fine so far. Current company is my second job after i graduated, and have been working for this company for almost 5 years soon. Hehe...time passes really fast. I have been transferred few times within the same corporation among the subsidiaries to gain more experience and knowledge of my field in Finance and Accounting. And now i am handling a subsidiary oversea.
However, learning rules and regulations, tax implications and procedures of the oversea company really rots my knowledge for my own country. No matter how experience i can be, all my knowledge belongs to oversea and not applicable for my country. So, i did plan to look for overseas job, but i find not so easy to obtain one.
I wonder how do we apply for job overseas? Do we need to fly there for interviews? That would be a lot of cost flying here and there. So, i hope a better opportunity would come along my way. =)

Real burden my dear.
How I wish that suitable job is coming very soon.
Here in my country, there are agencies who prepare everything for the employment. Some applies through online and when the employer accepts, the agencies are the ones setting up for the interview. Employers often visits here and for some, they do interviews via phone.
Wish you more opportunities to come.

So sorry to hear that with your current job you are tied with a 5 year contract. i think i would not have done that myself, but then i stayed with my previous company for like 7 years, it was my first job and then moved to a better opportunity and stayed there for 2 years and a half. :D i think when you really like what you are doing, years would just count and pile up and the rest are secondary, the salary, contracts, etc. you would barely notice the time flying.
For me, it is okay to stay in the company while you hunt for a better opportunity, for your experience i think it is just about right that you find something else first before taking that leave. :D

Time flies really fast when you love what you're doing. Holidays and vacations make my years pass by so fast. And now that I'm on my 5th year, I might have a bigger chance of getting a job abroad.
Actually, some of my batchmates already left ond worked abroad. But I really waited for five years before applying for another job.
So I just hope, any moment from now, some employer or agency will be calling me for an interview.
If I'm enjoying my job here, I could be like you who will stay here until my contract ends. The job actually isn't difficult, but there's no enough reason here for me to stay.

You're lucky to have job-security, even if it's a job you don't like (maybe you like most of the work, but just not the company you're with ... whatever).
Job-security is why you sign a 'contract'---a guarantee that--as long as you hold up your end of the deal--the employer will hold up their end ... with provisions that 'ending the contract early' hurts the ending-party more than just 'dropping the job or -employee.'
Do you have another job lined-up, or doesn't your contract let you look for one BEFORE you're unemployed (and do you have sufficient provision for your time-between-jobs)?
@adnileb (5276)

Job security - checked.
Financial stability - crossed.
I cannot say I am secured (fully) since it cannot sustain my financial needs. I have been here for 5 years with no decent savings. Couldn't help my parents for their expenditures, and couldn't see my future life grow while working here.
Yes, it's a guarantee that I won't become 'jobless' in the next 5 years but it's like saying that I cannot have more money to save for my future.
I am applying for a new job now. And when it's all good, I'll go.

Well, talking about the job itself, it wasn't in line with the course I took.
The job is easy though. You just sit in front of the computer for the whole day.
But in terms, of advancement, I cannot guarantee it here. Same with my financial stability. My salary here couldn't fully support my present life and how much more for my future. So I just told myself to be patient and in time, I will leave this company and work hopefully abroad.
Thanks!

I may say that I'm happier now with my job because of several reasons. Because our previous company was recently acquired by a multinational firm which cater to different industries. That's why I find it so promising, because I see that there is growth and possible expansion and opportunities. Last year, I was not like this, I was so down that I almost resigned form this job.
