I want to start a small garden in my balcony. Just now there is only the money plant there. May go to the market this weekend and buy some plants and seeds. Have already bought a few pots and mud. Any suggestions on what to get to make the garden colourful.

Hi mayka! It is a good idea to develop a garden with some potted plants in your balcony. However, the prerequisites are - sun light, fresh air and of course regular watering. If you do not have either of these three elements or miss either of these then it will be difficult to maintain a garden. Instead of planting seeds (which take lots of time to grow and bloom into full fledged plants) you could buy seasonal/regular plants from a nursery and could fix them in the big pots (in small pots, plants do not grow much and you do not get much flowers, if it is a flowering plant). Make sure that your regularly water your plants and they get ample sun light. There are some plants which may require very less (direct) sun light, these plants are called indoor plants (mainly different species of money-plants) you could check from the Nursery and could plant them. All the best.

I do get a lot of sunlight in my balcony in the mornings. Fresh air too is there. Only have to ensure that I water the plants regularly. Will go to some nurseries during the weekend and pick up something. I dont want any plants inside the house.

The nursery that I wish to go to is very far away from my place of stay. Would need atleast three hours travel back and forth. So will have to go only when I can spare the whole day.

wow, That's a good idea. I too like maintaining garden. Balcony one sounds good as we can feel the cool breeze outside the window. you can plant some crotons with flowers and also plants with colorful leaves, that adds more attraction . If you like leafy vegetables then you can go for parsley and some spinach as they wont take much space.

Can spinach be grown in pots. Never knew that. May be I could try. But any idea how does one start growing parsley and spinach? Need suggestions because I have not had my own garden for many years now. Have to find a nice shop too where I can get seeds.

It is lovely to make a garden for your own if you have enough space at your home. (recently I read somewhere plants can also understand the language we speak) . Now we can plant every thing in pot, you need to do spend some extra time. But it is always give great happiness once the plants started to grow. Here in this place plants will get infront of our house, sellers are plenty and roaming in cycle. But only things is we don’t know whether it will be good or not. So it will be better if you go to a nursery to collects small plants. Please update with us once you make the garden.Best of luck to your efforts.

If plants understand the language we speak then I will have someone to talk to at home!!! I dont know whether I will succeed in looking after the plants but I think there is no harm in trying. Will try visiting a nursery this weekend if time permits.

There are nice plants that are easy to grow and are also colorful. If I were you, I would mix them with some nice herbs to uhave some fresh ones for your dishes. The kind of plants you need depend on where you live so I would suggest that you go to a plant nursery in your area and see for yourself.

Unfortunately I do not have any plant nursery near my house. I am planning to go on a holiday shortly so have not bought any plants because there will be no one to look after them. Will definitely visit a nursery on my return.

Thanks a ton for sharing this discussion. Well i think that is really a very good thought and that speaks how much u love gardening. It is always great to have a garden in your balcony as u can water and take care of them by yourself. Now since u have got seeds and plants for your garden, u can get some artificial plants as well as use some stuffs to beautify your balcony. Also u can use some colorful lamps and bulbs in your balcony to decorate the garden. What say?

The idea of beautifying the garden with some artificial plants is good. Thanks a lot. I had not thought of it. Just read this discussion to my daughter and she is also very happy with the idea. I am sure the next time we go to the market she will pick up some artificial plants.

Artificial flowers and lamps are good but we don't get the lively feeling with them like how we get from the natural plants. Preferably you can use them to enhance the beauty of our garden along with the natural plants.

don't over look what we call strawberry pots here in the US. In these pots you can plant many different plants in the same pot. It's great for herbs and other plants that hang down. Blessings

Plant something that bear flowers, like roses and suntan. Suntan is good because it's the kind of plant that is not very sensitive and can endure the hot sun or humid weather and bear flowers the whole year.

if you want color, flowering plants or plants that have colorful leaves would be great. if you want something edible, then choose vegetables and fruits. my mother has basil, rosemary, aloe vera, oregano, lemongrass, spring onion, and capsicum. our house is on a corner lot so there's a lot of space.

I stay in a building on a top floor. So dont have that vast a space. Will just be able to keep a few pots there.

Have you considered colourful and edible? You might mix decorative pots/planters with a few dedicated to vegetables (if space allows). A suggestion might be planting out a balconiere (long narrow planter) with ordinary lettuce (green leaved) and also lollo rosso (maroon/red leaved lettuce). Beetroot might also be a possibility as it has colourful leaves (edible in salad) as well as juicy beets for boiling up and serving fresh or pickling. One planter might be dedicated to onions and carrots - different types of foliage but a good paring as onions and carrots deter each other's pests! On top of all that there's the saving on grocery bills!
