Credit Card : Good or Bad?

United States
November 13, 2012 3:23pm CST
I never been late paying my credit card. Always on time or I pay in advance. However, sometimes I think that part of my paycheck goes to the credit card instead of spending the money on something else maybe shopping or anything? I am trying my best to settle what I owe to my credit card before this year end. However, sometimes its just so tempting. So I have decided to keep (in a box, inside the drawer) the card until its fully paid and take it back only when I really need it. What do you guys do? How do you handle your credit?

My mom got me a debit card and I can't use it like a credit card. I can't buy and pay later. I can only buy things when the amount of money in my debit card can afford it.

it's because of experience. She can be an impulsive buyer sometimes. She has a lot of debt in her credit card. :D

I like credit cards and I think there are more advantages for me to use it. First, it is very convenient. I don't have to bring a lot of cash and everything can be done. Second, it is safe. Today the crimes is increasing and I am afraid to be robbed if I have a lot of cash with me. Third, my bank will give me some gifts according to my purchase amount. Fourth, I use the credit card to pay when I go shopping online. As long as I can return the money before it charges me interest, it will be fine.

I prefer to use my debit card for all that... I don't have to worry about returning the money as I'd be using whatever available funds I have in my account. That way I only shop what I can afford and do not have to worry about paying extra fees, charges, or interest.

I have both the credit and debit. There some unavoidable circumstances or emergencies that I have to use both. But since I am okay with the finances, I am trying to settle it and control myself over some stuff that are not necessary and only use it for important matters.

I also feel the same way with you. I feel that I am working for the credit card company as most of my earnings go to credit card servicing. I also make it a point to pay regularly as I get the opportunity to do so but I can't help feeling such thing. In the Philippines, credit card companies are tapping their clients for other businesses of their affiliates ensuring that there are regular transactions going through the credit card. While this is good business (from a financial and accounting viewpoint), such doesn't help their debtors and worse, make them indebted continuously. Nonetheless, on the good side, I can count on the credit card when my cash is dwindling and I have to pay medical bills and medicines.

I am making sure now (after spending) is that I am going to settle it and only use it for gas (or emergencies, hope not). No matter what I still have to use my CC for building a good credit. However, I need to have limit spending it to build a good credit history. I can't spend it near the max limit or it will show a bad credit rating.

midway through college, one of my classmates was sent to the us with her brother by their parents to continue their studies there. as time went on, she said she would receive ready-to-use credit cards in her mailbox with the annual fee waived. so she would use it but before the year is up, she will pay her balance in full and have the card cancelled. it takes a lot of self-discipline to do that. i think people who don't have problems with credit cards are those that pay 75 to 100% every month. for them, it's just for convenience because although they had the funds, they don't want to carry cash. they also use it only for necessary expenses or those they know they can pay in full when the bill arrives. i think it boils down to knowing yourself.

Its true. I just got caught with circumstances like husband being unemployed, my CC could have been settled a long time ago. But now that I am almost near in paying all that I owe, I began buying stuff for myself. I am not spending lavishly though. I mean I haven't shopped for a like a year and I said why not give myself a break for now (buy stuff for myself for I have been working hard ;) ) After that though I have this guilt feeling after looking my current balance :\. I should have waited pay it in full anyways those stuff can wait. I know my fault he he he I mean hey $200 (will go to my CC) deduction on my next paycheck. That's why I am guilty!

I think it depends on how one use it. If one overdo using then it becomes bad. Everything that is too much is bad.

Credit cards are never bad. It's just that people are not discipline enough with money matters. My advice for those with weak money management is to use debit cards. At least if you don't have funds in it, you have to refrain from spending.

i dont have a credit card cos i dont think ut is needed for my daily life. i m never interested in applying a credit card to my bank. for me ATM card is enough for my daily life. it is simpler, easier and cheaper. i only need to pay monthly fee for that card and it is taken from my saving automatically. maybe credit card is needed for the one wo doesnt like to bring cash in their pocket or maybe they are interested in facilities that a credit card offer. but i prefer cash in shopping to credit card. using credit card is also tempting. cos we can buy something without using cash we tend to shop more than we need then it makes our spending larger that it used to. moreover bank applies high monthly rate for credit card holder and 'punishment' rate if we are late paying it. i dont need a credit card and my life is comfortable enough without it..

I know I am comfortable without having a CC before when I only have my debit with me. But since I need to build a good credit I need to have a credit card. Discipline is the right word. I have that discipline in myself before. Maybe I should stop going to the mall ;|

Hi holyangels! When I don't have a credit card yet, I planned to have one so that I could use it when I need to book for flights and sometimes so that I could avail of some airline promos which would require a client to have a credit card. But there are times that I cannot avoid that some would take advantage if we have one. They would borrow it in order to buy what they want. That was my problem with my credit card. I shared my experience in relation to this several months ago and until now I am still paying for the balances. That was my fault also. I hope it would not happen to me again. I should be wiser this time.

I dont have a problem paying mine. Its just that when I just paid, I am going to use it again and again to the point that I couldn't move on because I got stuck or until I can't use it because I am getting to the max. I feel like its a bill that I need to pay every month. I want to stop this habit and discipline myself. I will let you know if after this I am successful *wink*

I think I have a pretty good grasp on my credit card use. I make sure that I always pay it in full before due date to avoid charges and interests. I also make sure that's don't splurge uselessly and even though I have a credit limit, I set another lower, personal credit limit. Like 50 or 75 percent of my real credit limit is my personal credit limit, meaning I can't spend or use my card anymore once I have spent that much of my credit limit. This way, I will still have some money left on my paycheck instead of it all going to CC payment.

I don't go over my credit limit but for some instances like emergencies I could spend it to the max which is I think is not good for building a good credit. So what I am trying is to settle them and start over.

Credit cards are good to have, if you can handle them. Just charging something everytime you want to buy it,, isnt good. BUt I know many need cc for hotels and things. But you have to be careful how you use them.

Hi there! Well, having a credit card always has its pro's and con's. Pro's, when you needed to buy something and your short in cash, you use your card, as long as its not maxed out though. Credit cards are handy and if you don't want to carry along too much cash, which is of course risky, you bring you card. And of course, one obvious reason why having credit cards are good is that it lets you pay at a later date, sometimes even without interest. But then again, for the consequence of having it, I personally think its more that the pro's of it. Of course, its tempting to use a card, you might get hooked up using it not noticing your maxing it out. Then there are charges that you normally will not have if you would be paying in cash. Then interests of course and the annual fees for the card itself is also an added expense to top of you credit card statement.

The reason why I have a CC is that I want to build a good credit history. I want to buy a house someday. However, since I am using it to the max sometimes, I am not really getting a good credit rating. It may take a while to build a good credit but so easy to destroy it.

its good sometimes when you need to use it to buy something important but if you will just use it for pleasure and over use it then it might be bad

Ohhh.. it is such a sweet thing to have credit card. But yes, you are right the more you have it with the more you are going to be tempted to scratch it for something, too bad. the power of control is losing. Anyway the advantage of credit card is that when you really really need something and it can be charged and you dont have cash you can get it. But then if you have the discipline of getting only what you need and making sure you have the money to pay it on the payday, then it's okay. You need to pay the whole amount and not the amount due to cut off the finance charge and other charges therein. One advantage of the card too is 0% interest on appliances, payable in certain months. Use the credit card for it, then pay the monthly due for the appliances. and no other thing should be there also aside for that appliances. Credit card is okay to me. I am now a disciplined shopper. ;)

I saw it in a money once where a woman froze her credit card in a block of ice so that she wouldn't be tempted to use it unless it was an emergency. I have a few credit cards but I don't use it except for buying food. It's not too difficult for me to limit my spending because I don't have an income yet . Hopefully I will stay like this when I find a job.

Personally, credit cards aren't bad. In fact, they're even helpful and convenient for us. It's us who use it (or abuse the use of it) are the ones to blame for the expenses we incur. Well, actually, if we always pay the full amount each due date, we won't be charged those high interest rates, and the points or rebates we get makes buying an item a very good deal. Hold on to your card. You never know if an emergency would arise. Having one also gives you a good credit standing, which could come in handy when you're applying for bigger loans like financing your house or buying your own car

I know I blame myself he he he for allowing myself to get into the trap of temptation. Interest! Arrghhhh! I noticed capital one has charged me interest, so I stopped using it for the meantime but I mean I know you're right I need to pay my balance in full so I don't get interest. I just noticed that when I was checking list of transactions. The interest isn't that bad like $5 but hey it still 5 dollar, I could have bought that for Starbucks :|. I just need to discipline myself from now own ;|
