I have just brought home a pair of very small turtles. I believe they are of the Red Ear Sliding species but I am not too sure. Since I live in an apartment, I cannot leave them outdoors. The maximum I can do is leave them on the floor for a while and then put them back in the water tub.Can live in water most of the time? What food do I feed them and how many times in a day should I do the same? Also how large do they normally grow? Basically I would like to know all there is about these species so they they stay in good health throughout.

Hello Amitgune! I was also given a turtle as a gift from my friend, which was in turn was also given to her by our friend. So,I decided to keep and nurture the turtle and put it in a pale with some water to let it bee keep fresh all the time.At first I put
some cook foods in there, yet it was not favored to eat,so I tried some pellets used to be eaten by chickens. Now I feed the turtle with live small fishes or tadpoles from canals in our area. The canal in our street has this water running water with these little fishes in there,so I tried to feed it to the turtle. It likes to catch it in its aquarium, where it swims with the turtle and the small fishes. You must have to watch it as it tries to catch the small fishes. When nothing is seen, then you must have to put another batch of small fishes to not letting it get hungry.I hope you enjoy your new pet.

I believe that you call your pet shop there a fish store, which is very different here in my country, the Philippines, because we call it a pet shop where you could find other species of other pets you could like to have. They cater with parrots, turtles, gold fishes, and all other fishes. They also cater with dogs, cats, monkeys and other animals which are all cute to possess and of course its prices. They have all kinds of foods and accessories for the benefit of our pets,so are its medicines to cure all kinds of pet sickness. Here,if you say fish store it pertains to the fresh fishes from the seas which are brought by the fishermen and their sponsors to sell all sorts of fishes and other marine products are sold here
which are really very fresh, sometimes other fishes are still alive.

That is great to know. Yes, a fish store here has only fishes. I do believe that we have pet care depots here in India but I have never visited one. I shall certainly look into the same though. Thanks for your help. By the way the turtles seem to be gelling well with the new environment.

My sister has a pair of turtles. They've had it for years and they put them in the aquarium. They're in the water all the time so I guess that's okay. They feed them pellets similar to what you feed gold fish or something.

Hello Amit, Happy Deepawali. It is better you take some tips from the person from which you bring these. I have not any experience of it. You have not proper space to keep these. It is my suggestion leave them in a pond or any river, so they can eat what they like. Give freedom to them.

Happy Diwali to you as well. Though your suggestion seems most appropriate I would hate to part with them. Moreover I have seen them bred by many people. Also, as it is a comparatively strong animal (at least by the body structure), I feel that it may not require that much care. Anyway thanks for the advice.

They can live in water for a very long time. Here is a podcast (WOO thumbs-up!) that talks about turtles:Http://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/turtle-talk-time/id561187914?mt=2&ign-mpt=uo%3d4
The first episode is about how to take care of turtles. But, any way, I would put a dock in so they can crawl up on it to rest. Also you will need a heating lamp (pet stores). for food i use flukers freeze dried shrimp & reptilemin.
