Being a worker in an online company needs concentration and fast internet connection. However what happen in our situation is opposite, Workers are using more the internet on personal matters that hinders to cater the needs of the customers of the company. When the manager knows about it, as an immediate action he choose to blocked not knowing that it makes more the connection function very slow. After a few days of suffering that torture, we asked him politely to unblocked but he is stand on his decision. As of the moment, we don't have any pleasurable moments in our spare time in the office. I do understand if he do it on facebook but worse because he include all the site and what is left is our business site only.Would it be it be reasonable?

I stand for your boss blocking the FACEBOOK site in your company, because an office is a place of work, and not a place for people who wants to mingle online. On the other hand, It really took the FUN that the employees deserves in their spare time, but now a days, most of the mobile phones out there has the ability to surf the internet and connect to the facebook page. As a Computer Technician, I can say that blocking the Facebook site has nothing to do with the Slow internet connection for its the Internet Service Provider's problem or maybe the company has availed low speed internet service.
Miss daisy, as an advice, its not your boss' fault, for that is his/her right to do anything he'she wants for her company. We can only suggest to them, but its their decision will prevail in the end.
Have a nice day~!!

Yes, It is reasonable only. In many offices and schools, Management blocked some illegal sites which are not related to their business. access to such sites will disturb the people attention to work. This will induce loss to their business so they are blocking such sites. Even in our office we don't have access to any entertainment sites.

Sites that are not related to your business especially entertaniment sites can be a nuisance and may lessen your concentration at work. The company may suffer if there will be less efficiency in the job and your job may suffer as well. You can devote your free time in other meaningful activity like reading books and business article from magazines and leave those entertainment sites at home. In our university, they blocked facebook and it help as concentrate in our studies.

I think it would, without exceptions. There should be at least a Wikipedia, a browser and e-mail services left... because you can have emergencies. But I do agree with blocking facebook. Working time is not for surfing on the net and chatting on facebook. If there's spare time, you can do anything else... reading a book, going for a walk, write a diary, talk on the phone... the life doesn't consist of Internet only.

Hi friend, sad to hear that your boss blocked face book and other social sites. I think your coworkers spent a lot of time with other sites, so only your boss take this serious decision. Most of the employees are spending their office time in fb and other social sites and companies are blocking social sites in this way

I believe blocking certain websites like facebook, youtube, twitter and other similar sites is just reasonable for any company, especially if the workers' productivity is affected.
Sites like facebook are NOT bad, but such sites may not only compromise data speed, they too may take too much attention while one is working. I understand your boss' decision regarding that matter but perhaps he might have looked onto the situation incorrectly when he blocked the other sites that you need. Probably the best thing that you should do is try to convince him that he does need to block the other sites that you need, but I sure do suggest that you try to keep facebook blocked so you could focus while working.

that is the risk of having an online company. however, the approach to solve the situation is wrong. management should have considered the effect of blocking sites. it could really slow down business as responses and communication to clients and business partners will be affected.
there should be a policy coupled with defined sanctions for all employees that will use office hours for personal matters. they can start with it and if situations remain the same, then they have to install cameras.

I think that the use of the internet should be primarily used for business purposes only. Some workers tend to be unproductive because ,instead of concentrating on their work, they would be chatting with their friends.
When I was working in an office, we also had access to the internet. But we were warned not to open sites other than those work-related otherwise it would reflect our performance. The office installed a software to detect any activities outside of work.

I understand if office will block facebook but I don't understand it in your company since you are an online company. Some offices I know block it because most employees check facebook first before doing other things in the office

i think it is the best thing to do and being the manager he is be firm and strict in imposing it properly so the employees will learn to work and do their job well. after all that is the reason why you are there which is to work and do the job for the company and if nothing will be done regarding this then most employees will abuse it and will not work properly during working hours and when in the ofice because their attention is on facebook or the internet. i think you just have to do your jobs and do internet and facebooking while not in the office.

Hi Daisy!
So you mean you cannot anymore participate in myLot at the office during break times? How sad. In our regional office, they just blocked the facebook but the management would open it again at 4pm.
But I am presently assigned in the municipality and I can open all the sites I want.

The office has the right to block the sites. You are paid. You may use the spare time to mingle with your co worker maybe that's the goal of the manager. Take a short and quick nap during break time. There was a study that napping during break times adds more productivity to the worker at the latter part of the day specially. It is also relaxing.

Maybe this is a good thing. Facebook has become boring and we all can be doing better things than social networking all day.
