A very unusual teacher

While having a discussion and chit chatting with our teacher, he suddenly raised and told us that he is an atheist. I know we have the freedom to be that way but in a setting such ours in the Philippines, I just find it very unusual. As an active Christian, after hearing such, I felt like I was being slapped in the face and bombarded with cold water. On the other hand, I am aware that there are atheist person in our society however, I was just not expecting for that person to be in our school and declares himself to be such. (No offense on the topic though)
Please feel free to make some comments or ideas regarding this? By the way, I am studying at a Jesuit School.

Hey I got you there.. Especially most schools (whether Catholic or Non Catholic) are inclined with Guidelines that are centered or guided by God's law and human law..
He may have been honest enough, but it's true he had better kept if for himself.
It may just lead his students into confusion and since he is a teacher, may also influence him.. :)
I wonder who your teacher submits to? Just family and employer? O.o

Submits to none perhaps. I can really say that he is pretty lousy when in class and at the start of the semester, he keeps saying that he dislikes teaching his subject matter. I am pretty confused on what drives him from going to school and teaching students, maybe its just out of salary.

Hello Sir Xtian! :)
Haha Hmm maybe I'm a young adult..I have mentioned family and employer as to where the teacher may be submissive.. :D Just as long as there's someone he considers above of him, then he can still be handled..
His expression of being atheist may be irrelevant to the class-room..
Well I may not know his intention.. Just hope the students wouldn't be influenced yet at their early age...
For sure, parent's would wonder if the kids suddenly decides not going to church too :/

I bet you guys are young and most probably does not know what drives a person to work. when you reach a certain age you would know heheheh. most probably, what drives him to go to work is the financial rewards. sometimes there are things you have to do out of necessity rather than the pleasure of it. I agree with meowchie, the class may not have been the right place for him to release his frustrations about religion and other frustrations in life. I have also taught in our local college, and I have experience the power to influence young minds, and it is the teachers responsibility to mold young minds to become good citizens, persons and regardless of religion, good children of God/ Allah or whatever you name you call the higher being.

I agree with laciece. We have to be more open minded and respects other's beliefs. His professional conduct has nothing to do with his beliefs. I salute his courage to stand for his belief. Let us have a twist of situation. Imagine you are in a school of Atheists and you are the only believer of God in that school. Can stand and tell everyone that your a believer of God? You might say Yes. Same goes for your teacher. And if you can actually do that then I salute both of you.

well, things have change a lot here in our country, before, such declarations are met with condemnation, but now people are more open minded. I myself is a devout catholic. but hey, to each is own, what is important is respect, I still believe that the road to heaven is paved with good intentions not with religion
