Breaking Into Home Can Be Painful

I live in an apartment. The main gates of the building are bolted at 10 P.M. So sometimes when I'm late and the gates of our building are shut, I scale the boundary fence to enter the building. Then reach for the stairs and climb them to reach our flat. I don't like to disturb anyone by calling and asking them to unlock the gates. So last night was no different. It was pretty late, 2 in the morning. The gates were shut. It was dark and I was in a hurry to enter. So I climbed on top of the boundary and jumped. Landed on a manhole. The iron cover broke. I fell on the ground with one leg on the ground and the other inside the manhole! At night, after the mishap I felt nothing. I picked myself up. Ran to room and snored out. It was only in the morning today, that I found my leg bruised at several places. I guess I jumped too hard. Landed on one foot, which magnified the impact. The iron cover had been around for 15 years now I guess. So it must have been rusting in the insides. Thanks to me and my mishap, its finally getting retired and replaced. A painful replacement, you can say! What do you supposed happened that make the iron cover break?
