I have developed applications both in Android as well as iPhone. Both requires good understanding of the underlying programming languages, for iPhone Objective C and Android it's Java. As far as learning curve is concerned iPhone has steep learning curve over Android, thus making Android the first choice for a starting developer. I feel using a framework for programming can greatly ease the programming task as you don't have to write everything from scratch.
