Dogs licks everything, and they don't even wash their mouths after meal. But still, their tongues so squeaky clean. And we,who wash our mouths after each snack, have to clean our tongue twice a day. What is their secret, why doesn't anything sticking to their tongue.

Not only they look clean but they really are clean. From what I know, dogs' saliva doesn't permit the germs to develop. There are cases when dogs (especially older ones) have teeth problems, but they rarely got gum or tongue problems. When such problems appear, it means they have hurt their gums or tongue while chewing a stick or a bone.

I really don't think that a dog's tongue is really any cleaner than the tongue of a human, in fact, I believe that the dog's tongue is probably a lot dirtier than the tongue of a human. The reason that I think that this might be the case is because of the fact that dogs will eat trash and even feces from time to time, there is no way that I could imagine that would be cleaner than the mouth of a human. I think that the reason that their tongues look so clean is because of the fact that dogs don't sweat, they execrete excessive saliva when they are hot.

Yes, dogs tongues are cleaner than ours for sure. There was a show that tested that theory and come to find out there was 1/2 less germs and bacteria on a dog's tongue than on a human's tongue. Kind of weird, kind of scary. Maybe their diets are better?

Hello Apam, So we people are nastier than dogs,I see.But why?Dogs eat just about anything, from mouse to snakes, and lick anything they have on sight.Still their mouth is clean, its ironical.

Dogs tongues may look clean but they are not, for many years this was thought to be true, that dogs tongues were clean, but science has proven this is not so, dogs mouths and tongues are full of germs.

Dogs get bad teeth just like we do, so they are't different at all. We clean our tongues to keep bacteria from getting on our teeth and making them get cavities, but still I am glad we don't have to lick everything. So yucky.

You can't always see bacteria. I would imagine your dog has a healthy looking tongue. Some breeds have tongues that are darker in color than others. Perhaps your dog has a tongue that is looking less worn for wear, and is in tact with a healthy color. I guess as long as a dog is licking, there will be less sticking. It can always lick something to wash it off.

Hi garavegeta: I think it has something to do with their saliva. I read once that dog's saliva really protects them from infections and bacteria. It's even so powerful that it could be used for treatment purposes ALVARO

hi garvegeta, I just want to say that I have never examined a dogs tongue before...But I will venture out to say I just don't believe it is as clean as you think it is..Dogs eat everything and almost anything... I know some people just treat their dogs like their children, which being I am not a dog owner, I don't understand either. I just don't like to see pet hair all over furniture or clothing..I think it is disgusting..I just don't like it it looks unsanitary/ized to me...There are even people who will let their dog or others dog who get so happy and playful that they let the dog lick their face, and in the mouth, UGH!!!! I get it probably a lot of you don't agree with me and its ok..Its just one mylotters opinion...

They say dogs mouth are the cleanist, I am not sure how they maintain this. It may be their saliva.
