HELP! Camera to computer issue?

I am trying to connect my Canon Powershot digital camera to my computer and I am having ABSURD difficulties. Normally I can just hook my camera up, with the USB cable, to the computer and BAM! a separate drive will show up (a USB drive) and from there, I can just view photos in folders. I currently do not have any Canon software downloaded onto my computer (because my computer's OS is so old that the CD-ROM will not install on it). Now, for some reason, with the same camera, I am not able to have that extra removable drive pop up like it normally does. I don't know what's up with this? I'm not sure if anyone out there has the answer or any suggestions for me, but if you do, please let me know!

i also encountered the same problem months ago... what i did is i checked the connectivity of the camera, switch it usb mode, or storage mode (something like that), and then connect it to the computer. if all these suggestions doesn't work, then i think you can buy a card reader. the simplest you can do.

I had a problem with my cable while my ports were working fine. I went in for a card reader and all is well with me now. I think having a card reader has another advantage in that you do not have to have the camera switched on. Just remove the card and insert it into the card reader.

All of the above comments from our friends here in mylot is correct. But also try to considered the security settings and virus protection of your computer. A virus may have prevented your camera disk from popping in the computer. Maybe it has been block also by your anti-virus software, try disabling it and reconnect again the camera cord. Update me with the changes, so I can tell what to do next..

As you say, there should be a new removable drive in My Computer as soon as you connect the camera. If this drive is not appearing then obviously the camera is not properly connected. The most likely issue would be that a fault has developed with the USB port. If you have another USB port then I would suggest that you try the camera in there. If you do not have another USB port then try attaching a different component to the port to confirm that the this is the problem. Assuming that none of the ports are working then check in the Device Manager to ensure that the USB controller is working properly. It could also be something obvious like the cable itself, if it has been bent sharply there could be a broken connection. It is doubtful that you will have a spare cable because the makers of the camera tend to use a small plug in order to force you to use their cables. Although you could ask if any of your friends have a cable you may try.
