When Should I Take the Fruit Juice?

Hi friends and community
I had been chasing my grocery store to get me packs of Cranberry Juice since the past 6 months but as there were no other buyers, they kept delaying and finally they called up last evening to tell me that my pack of 10 had arrived. I have those packs now at my home.
Why Cranberry Juice? I was told about this juice and its benefits for people who suffer from Ulcerative Colitis. I did a research on the Internet and found that it can help. So now, it is going to be a medical reason for having this juice.
But what I am confused about is the fact that I have literally no idea on what should be the timing when I have this juice. Had it been just for fun, I might have had it anytime but as it is for medicinal purpose, I am quite sure that these juices might have to be taken empty stomach or even any other specific time.
Unfortunately, my doctors here are quite ignorant about the Cranberry juice (ah, they are also much ignorant about my illness) so I cannot trust them.
Hope you people would share some of your experiences with juices, their health value and the timing o when should I have this!
Cheers,
Have a great Week Ahead.

Hi godson
I like Cranberry juice. We're buying that juice sometimes. Because that is also good for UTI. Sometimes when me and my bestfriend eats lots of salty snacks, we feel like our lower backs' pains. So we drink the juice for some days.
About your question, I honestly have no idea. But my guess is that it is better to take it not on an empty stomach since it is a bit sour. Better to drink it when you are full.

Hi godmom
Good to see you back dear. How was your holiday?
I will also ask my wife to go for it, though I know she wont like its taste - the sourness doesnt go well with many people, but I loved its taste.
I will do take care that I dont have it on an empty stomach and take it after some light breakfast or before meals.

So far so good. I thought it might make some disaster with my internals and was scared if that happened what will I do with the 10 packs... but nothing as such happened and I have already emptied one and a half bottle till today.
If you have uploaded those pics already on Fb, I think I should search for you on FB and send you a request... you exit there with cp(as your blog profile says)?

Holiday's so enjoyable. I am planning to post some photos here as soon as I have them put it one file at least. I love sour fruits, kiwi is one. Sometimes I'm buying berry juice only.
So how do you feel now drinking the juice?

Hi Sid,
Juice and just like other fruits are better to drink or eat before you eat some heavy food like lunch or dinner
If you had dyspepsia like me you should drink it in a moderate volume then follow eating rice.
or you can drink hot plain water to make the digest of the juice easier for your stomach
Hope that help

I hope you can see the different after two weeks drinking juice
and you can enjoy life for even more
I eat banana all the time since it is good for my dyspepsia
once for a while I also drink mango and oranges
tough it is not recommended by my doctor, I just ignore it since they have a really good taste

Hi ifa
Mine is similar to dyspepsia but a little more worse than that. Yes, I had one glass of this juice before lunch today and would follow up the same before dinner. I would start with 2 glasses a day before meals and if these juices go with my body I would make it to 3 glasses a day. I hope that it would keep things better for me.
Which fruit juices do you go for dear?

I have no medical training at all, but logic tells me that you should drink cranberry juice with food. The reason I say that is that I think the acidity of it, on an empty stomach, may be counterproductive.
As I say though, I've really no idea. That is just my thoughts.

Hi GreenMoo
Never mind the no medical training dear, even I am not a doctor but yes, on my health condition, I had to search over on the internet as the doctors here do not know much about it and I have to go to a different city (about 1200 kilometers from here) for my annual health checkups and treatments.
returning back on the discussion, well, yes, I think you are right. Empty stomach, the cranberry juice can be a burden on the digestive system as I found out it has sour taste on the higher sides. So it might increase the acidity.

Hi thesids! Cranberry juice is also very good for the kidneys. Prevents and helps get rid of kidney infections. I don't know of specific times that you should drink it though. I have just drank it randomly throughout the day. I have also read that the absorbic acid in Orange and Grapefruit juice helps absorb the stuff you need in your food or medicine. Now being careful because it can actually cause you to over absorb for some medicines and cause an over take reaction. You should look that up about not mixing grapefruit with certain medicines. It is interesting.

Now that you mentioned kidney stones..there are a couple of other fruit juice situations that are worth mentioning too. Lemon juice helps to break up kidney stones and white grape juice can help to reduce cholesterol. You can research these medicinal properties on the internet. I once also found a site with a list of medicines that you can not take with certain fruits..especially grapefruit. That is if you can't get a straight answer out of those doctors. Sometimes it is like pulling teeth trying to get them to just tell you what you need to know.

hi JenInTN
Good for kidneys. That is something great news. Last time when I was at the Ultrasound, they had found some small stones on the kidneys too. I will surely search for information on this if the cranberry juice can help me get rid of at least these stones. And that does give me some hope for using it to cleanse the bigger stones I am carrying in the gall bladder.
And the Orange and Grapefruit juices might be next in queue. These are easily available here at almost most of the grocery shops. I might go for them too as the biggest problem I am facing (apart with the others related to UC) is that somewhere I have started to feel that the food that I intake doesnt get absorbed well in my body. Doctors at the hospital had not answered my queries on this last time when I had been to Hyderabad for my health checkups. But maybe they can help me identify whether I can take grapefruit juice with their prescribed medicines.
Thanks for a quite helpful response as always. I now look forward to the two you mention.

Hi Sid
Have you heard of Idiopathy? Well, that is the name for those doctors who are idiots and don't know neither allopathy, homeopathy, ayurved or other alternative medicines... and can't prescribe their patients proper medication. No offence to any of the doctors here, please. In your case it seems the doctors are not sure what to check, test, which med to prescribe and its dose/s too.
Since you already did your research, make it more specific as i found a cup daily in some site but 4 - 10 oz for 3/4 times daily etc. Some site even suggsted a drink with lemonade !!! Dr.Viju's prescribes - start it with a small initially and if you find any improvements, go for large..
Take care

Hi viju
Idiopathy... You had me thinking for a while
Well yes, the doctor yesterday said - "I have no idea what is cranberry". So I took one pack to him to have an idea... he looked at the pack as if he knew all about it and after a thought said... well, try it, if it goes well with you, you can have it ... Just if he knew I have 10 packs here at my place.... GRRR!
(and if this discussion could wait for a few more days, I surely would have put up the interaction with my doctor as a discussion, at least that would have been funny and more interesting).
I did come to know (from those sites) that Ii should have around 2-3 glasses of this juice but none mentioned when! and that is what was confusing as if it goes as a medicinal thing, I thought there should (or would) be some timings or anything special.

Fruit plus fruit juices are digested very quickly so it's better later on the day unless you have a cooked meal/heavy meal before. Fruit/juices are digested within 20-40 min. Other meals take about 8 hours or even longer. Which means: fruit first (to many a desert) and after that the (hot)meal. If not the fruit is rotting in your inside till the meal has been digested.
If you take this for medical reasons I would try to take it about 3 times a day. It's worth trying.

BTW the whole idea of the juice is to make your urine more sour so a high dose of vit C will help as well. Why? Because your body is not able to store vitamine C so will pee it out. Bacteries will not easily grow/multiply in a sour environment. So I would advice you as well not to use any sugar as well and have a close look at your diet.

Hi WakeUpKitty
This is some really useful information here.
Actually I was told about this Cranberry Juice by a dear MyLot friend about two years ago. I had literally searched all places I could, here, and none had it in stores. Took me a while but now, I have 10 packs of 1 litre here at my place.
I just had one glass (200 ml) as per your advice (I read it before heading out for lunch).
And yes, I must mention, that did find similar reasons (the Sourness will not allow many bacteria to grow) and maybe this is one of the reasons they also mentioned it helpful for people with Ulcerative Colitis, on the few sites I was on.
Thanks again, for the much helpful information. I will have it 3 times daily... and hope things would be good or at least better for me.

I would think that it would be fine to drink at any time. While you are using it for medicinal purposes, it is not a medicine. As far as I know, there would be no side effects. Well, if you drink too much, it might cause loose bowels as with other fruits and juices!
I think if you have it with each meal, that would be ok. Just don't have too much as there is likely to be a high sugar content.

Hi pumpkinjam
I think I would need to be watchful about the new addition to my diet. Though none of the doctors around seem to be aware of its health benefits and also if it has anything to do with healing or even keeping my Ulcerative Colitis issue under control, I have to work it out for me on my own (and of course with some good information coming up here on this discussion, it would definitely help me).
I have planned to take about 200 ml (a glass full) of it before lunch and dinner. And will watch how this effects me, and if it doesnt complicate matters, I will make it to 3 times a day (as recommended by WakeUpKitty - #1 above) and try not to over take it... as I just had one glass and loved its sour taste and red color.
And I do appreciate the warning you mention - if you drink too much, it might cause loose bowels as with other fruits and juices!

Oh Bhai! You are getting some help! Cranberry juice can be taken at anytime of the day. Most Americans have it with breakfast. But I would sit some cran-grape juice, which is a mixture of grape juice and cranberry juice, in the morning with my allergy pill on a empty stomach. So I suggest to try the juice with every meal . I mean one day drink with it breakfast, the next day with your lunch, and then the next day with dinner. Then after that figure out which meal it went with the most.

I drink Cranberry water because its good for me , I love drinking it , I drink it every day . It does have a lot of health benefits , like preventing UTI , that was one of the reason I started drinking it because I never want to catch that . Cranberry water is better than the sweet Cranberry Juice .
Is it not a popular drink where you live ? is it hard to come by ?

Hi jazel
Ah yes, I remember we had a small discussion about this cranberry juice on one of your discussions. I love the color of this juice - a kind of red and also its taste. Though I had only a glass of it until now and I am luring for more... but the above have advised me not to go for more from day one.
So you have this juice about twice everyday as snack. Good to know. I will add one extra glass (I will have two glasses to start with and see how that affects my ailment) and if all goes well, the extra one gets added in the morning with my breakfast...

Hi Kashidanga
mate, your response here has me confused. Dont get me wrong, but then I read this juice be taken prior to meals on the response from WakeUpKitty (on #1 above). Also, what you say is quite true as I have seen many people go for fruits after foods and even many go for fruits before food.
But them, I think fruits can be taken anytime.

Since fruit juices are natural I think you may consume it any time of the day since natural foods or medication have no side effects. juices adsorb by the intestine very quick so i think you may want to consume the juice an hour or two after meal or have it on empty stomach.

Hi Sid,
You know i checked your discussion in my email box and i thought of replying, but due to off line work, i completely forgot to reply back this discussion.
Taking Fruit juice is really good for health, but the problem you have, every time spending on cranberry juice packets will going to be very costly.
I guess one pack will cost around Rs.120-150 and it will give relief for short duration.
My one friend detected similar issue of UTI infection, i will ask and provide the name of medicine recommend by doctor, you can check from chemist or doctor whether that medicine (syrup) is good for you or not...

Hi Bro
I have no idea on this thing. Bust just today was reading one article(articles.timesofindia.indiatimes.com/2012-11-19/diet/30453950_1_fruits-papayas-yogurt) that best timing for eating fruit is in the morning. Don't know if it is correct or not, but if we think like this then morning can be best time for fruit juice too..
Well, I will suggest that better you follow some experienced advice. I only wan to say is, whatever time you choose I wish it helps you best.

I don't know what this fruit is; but we, me and hubby take Aloevera juice that we buy from Ramdeb Baba shop here, it comes plain and with orange flavor, i like the later.
Sorry to know about your illness, have you tried Aloevera juice?
You can talk/meet to the doctor in Ramdeb Baba clinic in Bhubaneswar.
Wishing you a permanent cure.
thanks for this discussion.

In some of recommendations that I've read, they told that fruit must be consumed before meal for best result. When your stomach is empty, it will digest the fruit better, it has to do with some enzyme or something (sorry I forgot). Maybe it will do the same with fruit juice. Eat healthy and stay healthy .
