It depends what kind of gym you mean. If you mean gymnastics then the younger the better. However if you mean regular gym that involves weight-lifting, I'd say it is better for their body to develop fully, or almost fully at least. So start thinking about after the 18th year. It will be better though to begin a different kind of exercise from a younger age. Something like running or swimming can be a lot better for their body and their physical condition, which is much better than big muscles in the long run.

Yes. The gymnastics type of exercises especially those that focus on core muscles can be very advantageous for teenagers. Bodybuilding seems more appropriate when we reach our 20s because it is a more serious commitment in time and money.

I agree with coldnpale, there are different kinds of gym, but if you are referring with weigh lifting, i guess a boy must have strong muscles and strong bones. Also if new to this kind of stuff, i suggest having a trainer to assist you.

if you are pertaining to body building then it should be at the mid 20s because aside from that their bones became stronger, their muscles got matured too which is very important. Lifting weights in an early age will hinder the muscles, bones and ligaments to achieve their maximum growth.

My classmate started bodybuilding while we were in high school. But then again, he was really disciplined and he probably didn't do much of anything as well. I don't think he engaged in any other sports. Anyway, bodybuilding is a long-term commitment. It may be advisable to just condition the body with body-weight exercises (like the Pilates exercises) while in school. After college, if money and time is not much of a problem, then serious bodybuilding may continue.

I have watched a video about a gym trainer answering this question. It was posted in youtube and his name is Mike Chang. He stated that as early as teenager like 14 can start to work out though there are things that are recommended to do. not all work out can be advisable for teens.

The recommended age for a male to go to the gym varies... this can include their body weight, their physic, their strength, and what they are capable of doing such as lifts, and toning etc. Although this varies, the recommended age in my opinion would be 17-18 years old, because in that amount of time, your body is now developing and more structured compared when starting off at a very young age that would lead you to some abnormalities because your body is not yet fully developed and hormones are still getting to mature.

I think from the age of 16 one can go to gym.

16 is the best age to start body building. It also depends your body. If you are too fat start as early as possible.

I do think that a boy doesn't really have to go to a gym until like 16, because until then, sports are better. They teach group work, they are more enjoyable, and it's not that easy to go to extremes than in gym. Also, as a teen, people are really easy to be manipulated, and people in gym giving advice to newcomers could be people who know nothing about health or have misconceptions or the ones who only think about getting muscles, and they would use steroids and other not really healthy nutrition supplies for the reason, which are so not healthy for a body which is still in development... and young boys, who may look up to this guys, are easy to persuade... so it's better to opt for a sports course and start gym later in my opinion.
