Ever had a Thanksgiving cooking disaster?

I have made a turkey for 41 years. In fact the bird is in the oven as I type. I always make my dressing from scratch. One year I saw a recipe in the newspaper (this was before internet) so I thought I would try it. We all love cranberry sauce for Thanksgiving. This recipe had all the ingredients I used along with sausage and cranberries. So I thought ok add the cranberries and I would not need the sauce. NOPE Had everything done got the dressing out of the oven took the first taste, and seriously the cranberries were so sour I had to throw out this dressing. Lucky for me I am quick to remake a batch of dressing and bake again but while mom always served cranberry sauce, I had NEVER used natural bag of cranberries for any reason. Talk about being sour. I knew my family would not have eaten. out in the trash with that batch, and made my own recipe for dressing and have never faltered from it again. Whats your bad experience on cooking for Thanksgiving?

Actually, that stuffing probably could have been saved. I would have tried to bring it up to par. I've never had anything that could be termed a "disaster" on Thanksgiving. My first major Thanksgiving dinner had one or two small glitches, but things got ironed out, and everyone loved the meal. I generally have tofurkey for Thanksgiving, so the actual cooking time isn't that terribly long. With roasting the tofurkey and veggies and doing some other things, I think that prep and cook time for yesterday's dinner was about 1 1/2 hours--not bad for a major holiday meal.

Come to the tofurkey side... Doing a vegetarian holiday meal generally is less time-consuming, since you don't usually have as long of a cook time on non-meat dishes. I'm certain that one could do dishes that require elaborate prep work and make a vegetarian meal time- and labor-intensive, but putting together a beautiful and healthy meal doesn't require it.

I usually do mine in steps. that way everything is hot and ready. I have to admit I was worn out after doing it. I may make another turkey but not all the trimmings but I am getting older and its getting harder on me to do it all with quite a few ailments. No you did very well getting everything done in that time. I praise you for your thanksgiving meal!

I was young and a newlywed and wanted to impress my husband. I made a cake that turned out pretty good. However, when it came to the icing, it was a disaster. I wanted to make a pretty lemon flavored frosting. It never turned very yellow and I added the lemon zest and more juice. I don't need to explain that everyone scraped the icing off the cake because it was too tart to be eaten. I have never tried to make icing from scratch again. I consider the market icing a really good bargain!

Awww bless you. you forgot to get foodcoloring LOL. Its really not hard to make a good frosting. If you would like a frosting that will never be a bad frosting, add me as a friend and I will send it to you. I love homemade frosting to ever use canned frosting always. I have a few times but prefer mine. Hope you indeed find a way to make frosting its not hard.

Thanks marie2052. I am always looking for new recipes to try. I do prefer to get them from other experienced cooks too. I'm doing the friend request now.

Years ago, when my mom was alive and we all got together for these things, my sisters took turns doing the turkey (I was living in Vancouver so was excused). This one year, the turkey just wasn't defrosting. We ended up having a bucket of KFC. Just not the same.

LOL Barb. When my two girls were young my mother decided SHE was making Thanksgiving dinner. So we came over at 2pm at 7pm I had a 2 year old and a 4 year old that was getting very fussy because there was STILL no dinner. Mom had the turkey baking at 325!!! I had made a turkey the day before so I took my babies home and fed them poor things. Mom was mad cause I left and did not talk to me for a month. LOL

I still haven't made an entire Thanksgiving meal on my own yet. We never even considered doing it when we lived at the apartments . . . the oven was never "right". When I cooked chicken pieces, it would never cook evenly even if I turned the pan every now and then . . . so could you imagine trying to cook a whole gigantic turkey in our oven? No way - I didn't even want to try. I remember my mom's concern for her turkeys is "is it cooked all the way - it looks a little pink" - and she'd keep saying that over and over - thank goodness it was just our family. But one year my sister invited a couple friends - and she said that - and they just got turned off by the meal. Fresh cranberries - oh, I guess it requires tons of sugar liquid to make it less sour. I recall my mom doing that one year . . . and although it was "ok", most of the family didn't like the texture and still it was too tart for their taste. The good thing is you have experience in the kitchen, and you were able to save the meal. Whipping out a remake probably wasn't that big of a deal as long as you had all the ingredients there. Thank goodness!! Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family, marie2052!

As the saying goes "Every master was once a disaster". I'm glad you were able to make a comeback after that ordeal. Otherwise, it would have ruined your Thanksgiving. Gladly, no mishaps yet for me for Thanksgiving since I don't know how to either bake or cook. Reading the dishes you cooked makes my mouth water and crave for them. Happy Thanksgiving!

aww you gotta try cooking. its not that hard and a lot more tastey than fast food or frozen. I cant remember not cooking. Even my grandma let me help her with canning, and butter churning.
