What are these membership cards for?

I've been getting these free membership cards from the mall, shopping center and even from the pharmacy. But, I have never gotten any benefit from it. It just crowds my wallet and I see no use for them.
These cashiers would encourage you to get one, because its free anyway. And, everytime you shop there, they would ask for your card to swipe it and get points.
If you know what Im talking about, have you take advantage of these cards?

We have a few here in mexico. If you shop at the stores on them.. youll earn discounts and gifts. I dont use them much. But one time I got a free 6 pack of coca cola at a new market that opened. it was just for having the card from another market.

Did you like the magazine? How much is it worth, compared to how much you've spent to get that reward?

Hi,friend
I have got many cards like you, too. I have got two pharmacy cards, two big malls membership cards, yeah, when I buy something, I get points for that. I really get a little benefit for that, after many years of buying medicine , I get very high amount of points, and I get a towel for the points, I paid almost one thousand yuan all together and all I got back was a towel, it's really not worth it.

That's what I thought. I don't think they're going to give a living room showcase for those cards.

I too have three cards from two different grocery shops and one from a medicine shop. Generally we get points on purchase of items from the grocery shop and when we have accumulated, I can either get a discount or gift from the grocery shop. While shopping from the grocery shop, you have to give them the card while paying the bill such that the teller at the cash paying counter swipes it and the points get added to your account.
And the medicine shop card gives me two options:
1) I can have a discount of 10% on every purchase of medicine worth more than Rs. 50/- INR.
or
2) I can have points added to my account against which I can get a gift item when I have accumulated enough points against it.
I feel these cards make life much easier.

I have quite a few of these as well, and many times have wondered the same thing. Many times I hear you have to spend a certain amount before they are really worth it as well. But in today's economy is this just not a ploy to make more money? Personally it would benefit if they shared more on how to earn with these.

Sometimes the cards are used to take the money off when the store has sales or you can earn rewards like some here have said. One time my neighbor bought a 70 dollar bike rack for 17 using her rewards.

I would get literature or ask questions on these programs, read it and if it isn't something you can use throw it away. Cut the card in half so someone else can pick it up. The cashiers are instructed by the superiors to offer them at each transaction. We have a preffered card at our Albertson's here and gives you a bit off of some items and also off of gas after you spend so much. So there is a little help to the customrer, but not much. Every little bit helps. So I would check these programs out and if they aren't of any good to you throw them away. Why have things in your wallet you don't need and won't use?

The card can be useful if after you receive all these point from the store, you can redeem the points for other products in the store, some can be used in exchange for a gift card, while others store charge you card member's price instead of regular price which work like a discount card on goods. Unless you don't like all these benefits of having a membership card, then by all means, don't apply them or just throw them away, they are not an absolute necessity for you in order to purchase goods in any store. The store management will have an idea how you shop and your spending habit, while you get to receive some free items as reward, it is a win-win situation for both.

eh...
i have the experience as well, there are so many membership cards in my house, but vast majority of them are useless but for a collection.yes,if i want to find out what advantage these things are, just for a collection.
but many people are remain ready to receive those cards by paying certain amount of money cuz they believe they could benefit from the store through these stuffs. It's a classic promotion measure of the shops.

I have a card, an advantage card in the mall. I got it, but it's not free. I paid for it, I haven't received anything from it yet, but every time I shop I give it to the cashier so I can gain points and I believe there is a benefits of having it. You can convert your points into goods or money. You will just buy something from the store and use your points to pay for it. I had also an advantage card in National Book Store and I was able to use it. The points in their were used to pay my bills for the purchases I made in the store.

I hate how you have to use them in order to get the sale price most of the time. At least they let you type in your phone number now instead of carrying 50 silly cards on your key chain or in your wallet. The only thing I like about these silly cards is that sometimes you get useful rewards. The ones at the grocery store usually offer you a discount on gas and other stores sometimes give you dollars off on your next purchase.
