Walmart...Why?

I remember shopping at Walmart with my family last weekend to get the makings of our Thanksgiving dinner. After talking with the cashier, who's not even eighteen, I felt bad because she has to work 3-11 p.m. on Thanksgiving night, and all day for Black Friday (that is if they don't do a walk out strike...which I'm 100% for!) My question is this; with the way the economy is right now, it's unimaginable that anyone who isn't banking these days would stand in line for a marked down game system, is it worth it? Also, to the Walmart execs out there, how do you sleep at night knowing you don't have to lift a finger to do anything & have your employees slave away at your stores for less than minimum wage? Happy Holidays!

walmart is a business designed for more money, there is no design for customer satisfactory of employee satisfaction. Anyone can be dissatisfied, but this is a job which nobody would like to risk, and nothing will ruin money earning good time for walmart.

The thing is with Black Friday retailers want you to buy, buy, buy! They want to make money off of us even if we have the money or not! As long as consumers show to buy things on Black Friday, this will continue to get worse and worse! Retailers are taking the fun out of shopping on Black Friday! Leaking specials ahead of time! Walmart started Black Friday on Thursday night at 8pm! It has gottan out of control! It is disgusting!

Retailers have discovered that the earlier we start our holiday shopping, the more money we're likely to spend! I'm so glad my daughter is grown now-I don't have to go out extra early to catch the bargains. It was fun the last time I did go-Black Friday sale and the store was liquidating at the same time! And she was a great help too.

Personally I have never heard they work for less than minimum wage, which that would be not right, and worthy of being reported. I have heard it is minimum wage though and most do not have benefits, and are hard to get a job with. But personally I know they do hire a lot of different ethnics so maybe those are the ones who least complain?

Ok, if she's underage, she's not working full time. The maximum hours a DAY that she's permitted to work if she's not 18 is only 8. (http://www.dol.gov/dol/topic/youthlabor/workhours.htm#.ULAYjmfNmso) Hardly slave labor. She should get a half hour of unpaid break, and at least 1 paid 15 minute break. So, she's really only working is 7 1/2 hours paid, and 7 1/4 hours if you really only count the time she's working the register. Walmart also does not allow anyone a minute over their scheduled hours if they are non-exempt (ie, hourly workers). My experience is that cashiers usually start at $8.00 an hour-not bad for a teenager! Now consider this: minimum wage is $7.25 an hour. If Walmart DID unionize, those workers have to pay into the union (about $100 locally), and then pay weekly dues that are somewhere (last I heard) around 10%, or $.725 an hour. That means effectively, they're earning LESS than minimum once they're unionized. My boyfriend works for Walmart, and we barely make it as it is; if they go union, he stands to lose about $1.40 an hour, or about $55 a week! Are you aware that Walmart sells almost NOTHING made here in the United States? Imagine if Walmart decided to sell only USA-produced goods? Heck, the economy could come back! As for Walmart execs-first, I sincerely doubt that any of them are here at myLot. And they know that there will always be bodies to come in and do the work. But really, what about all of the execs at the Hostess Bakery? I don't agree with them striking when they did, but the execs there DID destroy the company.

Wow that's pretty sad;( I think walmart shows that they just don't really care to their people. It's gonna be darn busy since Black Friday sale and holidays is approaching. So far I haven't encounter young people working at Walmart, Cvs, target and you name it haha I've done early shopping for thanksgiving cuz I know it's gonna be crazy out there:) glad I had cash back haha

I agree. I do not think it is fair, as I used to work at Wal-Mart. For the amount of work you put in to that store, minimum wage just does not seem fair in my opionion. I think instead, Wal-Mart should pay people based on experience and training, and not pay everyone minimum wage. I especially dont think it is fair if they are hiring a new cashier, who has over 2-3 years in cashier experience, and still only pay them minimum wage. That to me just does not make sense, but again, just my opionion. I do not think that Wal-Mart should make their employees work so long on Thanksgiving, and give employees the option if they want to work. Because even if an employee says no and that he or she would rather spend time with their family, there are always other employees lined up wanting overtime week after week that would gladly take it in a heart beat. I think Wal-Mart should at least give employees the option if they want to work on Thanksgiving and Christmas, because that is times where i think a lot of people want to see their family, and rightfully so. I just think their work policies could improve, that is for sure.

it is pretty sad. i know the same thing happens here on Boxing day but at least the staff gets double time and a half because it is a stat holiday but store owners in their greed decide to open and at least they have to pay for it. i have to say that we have gone shopping on Boxing day and it has been crazy but i don't mind it.
