Thanksgiving Day ...what is it all about?

Today, other countries celebrated "Thanksgiving Day". With all honesty, I dont know the history or origin why other countries celebrated Thanksgiving Day and why not celebrated by others. Is thanksgiving day a movable date or fixed date in November? And what is the significance of the turkey as one of the main food event .Does it mean without a turkey on the table, its not thanksgiving day? This truly hangs up my mind as to why this is not celebrated by everyone around the world irregardless of color, nationality or creed. I genuinely appreciate if someone could enligthen and load me up with some inputs. How about you, do you celebrate thanks giving day? As for me who is speaking from the voice of poor class family, we celebrate thanksgiving day everyday without a turkey for we always give thanks to our almighty creator every breath we inhale every milli seconds of the day. Despite hardship, dried fish on the table or worst rock salt over a hot corn rice and able to eat three times a day only, we can still share our smile to others, slept well at night without worries of having a burglars around the house to ransack our belongings and much more so we always remember our creator and give thanks in good or bad times.

THanksgiving is on the third thursday of November annually. It is the apitame of tradition. WHen Americans first ventured onto the land indians populated it. Americans befriended the native indian and indians helped the Americans to plant corn and hunt turkeys. The meals they had were a thanksgiving and they started traditions at that time that continue to this day.

It's called Thanksgiving day, but it's mostly just a tradition. When Europeans came to the Americas, they had difficulty adjusting to the climate and surviving the harsh winters. The story goes that a Native American tribe helped the Europeans create a settlement by teaching them farming, hunting, building construction, and sharing some resources with them. That settlement was able to better survive the winter and brought in a harvest from their farming efforts. The Thanksgiving meal is kinda like a Harvest holiday. Nowadays many Americans and Canadians are not farmers, but we still like to spend time with friends and family, eat traditional food, and start the Christmas shopping season. I just heard on the radio that in the 1920s Thanksgiving became known as the beginning of the American shopping season and that's also why American Thanksgiving is so close to Christmas...to maximize the shopping season. Sounds like you are eating in the true spirit of Thanksgiving though! Many people who celebrate the holiday don't think about this meaning.

Thanks! I enjoyed the time with family. Not everyone was able to make it, but it is always good to see them and phone those who are far from us.

It is supposed to be in thanks for the settling of this country ..USA.. pilgrims and Indians making friends, trying to get along etc. But sadly, after a couple of decades of them...Thanksgiving Day has become nothing more than a shopping day. Now that the sales are starting at 8pm Thanksgiving day and some stores just being open all day...people have to work that day..which means away from family. Black Friday is no more...that best I can know..was started as something for the women to day the day after T-day while the men sat and watched football! Now..sadly, that isn't even the case! I am alone today..family all to far away and kids with other families etc...I used to host the family traditional T-day...for 40! Now.. today I had my T-day dinner at Del Taco with coupons! So..it is sad that things like this that used to mean something...are dissapearing and mostly thanks to commercialism. It is almost even forgotten about as Halloween stuff comes out in August and Christmas stuff comes out in October..and then.. oh, yeah... T-day,..which has not become "S-Day..shopping day".

Hi coffebreak, Thank you so much for the sharing much appreciated. I am just so sad to picture out your situation when you are alone celebrating thanks giving day when you used to spend it with your lovely family. Its a reality check thou. And secondly im sad to know that the true essence of your T-day has been converted into S-day. Truly the values of our tradition has greatly been affected by the human race evolution and technology outbreak. Im just worried that on the next and next generations - they will not know T day anymore as the T day itself but rather S day. This is now a calling of parents and elders to never stop to pass on the true values of our ancient tradition or else i should declare there is such thing so called "Endangered Traditions". Happy thankgiving to you coffebreak in the true essence of it from us here in the third world.

I honestly as well don't know what ThanksGiving means. But reading the responses, I now learn. So americans are originally europeans and native americans are the indians. But why the white people were treated like it's them who don't belong and became slave way back then? And correct me if I'm wrong, but even nowadays, the natives still seems like they don't belong to america.
