baking soda is not just for baking

That's good to learn that baking soda also has the cleaning feature. I didn't know it before. As to other features of the baking soda, I heard that you can try to make your own soda water with it. I am curious to this and I would like to try it one day.

So unusual that you would have this discussion. I just finished pouring baking soda onto the bottom of a frying pan and adding vinegar to help remove the cooked on grease. It works, too. I also use baking soda and vinegar in the garbage disposal to clear and clean it. For bee stings we make a paste with the soda and cover the sting. It is also an air freshener and absorbs odors in the refrigerator. So many uses and it is so inexpensive too.

As others have stated, it can be used for cleaning and odor absorption. I put newspaper at the bottom of my garbage can, then sprinkle baking soda. Both newspaper and baking soda absorb odors. I also use baking soda on pans that have burned on food. I add baking soda to the bottom of the pan, add water to the pan, then put it on the stove with the burner on low. After a few minutes, the pan is easy to wipe clean. There is a book about the many uses of baking soda, which I think would be worth reading for additional tips. I have heard people use baking soda to treat heartburn. I've never heard about baking soda treating eczema, but it doesn't surprise me that it might work.

You are definitely right, baking soda is one of those things that we typically have in our homes that can be used for many other things besides for baking. I've used it for cleaning and for helping to break through clogs that we have in our pipes as well. However, I've also combined baking soda with ammonia and some water to make a wonderful carpet cleaner. Most recently I've taken to using baking soda as a booster in my laundry to work with my detergent.

I watched an episode of some series in Discovery channel that discussed the same thing about baking soda. It's somehow the same as what you had stated. It's like a did you know type of series, I forgot what it was. Good to know this. Although I don't really clean the sink, or at least I'm not the one assigned to clean it, my sister do almost all the cleaning in the house.

Yup! I do the same thing whenever I clean our refrigerator most especially if my husband would accidentally put inside either a "langka" or "durian". Gosh! The smell would really last for days!

i also heard my aunt years back who was a dentist that she uses baking soda to brush teeth of her children.i also come across a video about using baking soda to make liquid glow. in a small plastic bottle mix a small amount of baking soda to a brand of soft drink then mix it with a little peroxide then shake it.

It can heal eczema? Wow that is something new to me. I don't have eczema but I know some who have this skin problem so maybe I'd tell them to try baking soda for it may work for them that same way it did to you. I have been using baking soda in absorbing bad odor from my refrigerator and even in my any enclosed room actually it can really help. One time I sprayed solignum in one part of my bedroom because I saw a termite track. My bedroom was then filled with the bad odor of solignum. Even the exhaust fan can't help me get rid of the odor. Then I remembered baking soda. I placed big amount in an empty ice-cream container and then put it inside the room. After few hours the bad smell was gone. It was completely absorbed by the baking soda. In cleaning the sink, I also do use baking soda although not quite satisfied because it could not completely remove the yellow stains. How about you what are you adding to baking soda so the yellowish stains could be easily removed? Do you have a technique? Kindly share.

Thanks for sharing such a wonderful tip. I remembered reading some of the other uses of baking soda in the emails too. It is good to know what a normal baking item can do so much wonder in many areas in our household. Moreover baking soda is not expensive.

hi neelia, I have heard of bakig soda in the fridge for keeping it smelling fresh,,,it absorbs not so nice smells that might be in the fridge,,, \But as far as it being good for eczema...that has to be the best tip in days here...I don't have it but I know people who do and I will certainly pass this on...Thanks for the 411....information..
