November 22, 2012 -- Thanksgiving & JFK

Yes, today is Thanksgiving, but how many remembered it is also the anniversary of the assassination of John Kennedy? I'll admit I forgot it was today what with turkey and all the Black Friday hoopla, but I was watching the Dallas Cowboys game (and a sweet game it was -- I am a Redskins fan, but that's another post or story or subject) and it occurred to me. Dallas was where JFK was shot exactly 49 years ago today. I remember that day. It seemed so surreal to me when it first happened and the images were flashed across TV. I also remember watching the news when Jack Ruby shot Lee Harvey Oswald (Kennedy's accused assassin for those who don't know.) It was hard for me to wrap my head around what was happening.

I actually did remember that it ws the anniversary of JFK's assassination. I was in high school when it happened and they sent us home mid class not telling us why. In those days everyone had a transistor radio and as soon as we got outside we turned them on and heard the news. When I got home my Mom was in front of the tv with tears in her eyes. It was a horrible day.

I did not find out about it until I got home from school -- they never told us nor sent us home early. But like you, when I walked in the door, my mother was crying and the TV was on. It was just so unreal to me. Yes, Presidents Lincoln, Garfield and McKinley had been assassinated, but that was history. It just didn't happen in the modern (at that time) world. There are so many images burned into my memory from that event -- a forlorn Jackie standing next to LBJ as he was sworn in as president, John Jr. saluting his father's casket, the backward boot on the horse as it pulled the caisson. Many of these pictures have become icons, but I watched them unfold live.
