Do you check the movie ratings before watching them?

I am always chacking a particular site to get reviews on the movies that I am going to watch, and see the overall rating. Sometimes a low rating might put me off even if I want to watch the movie. It's very important for me to save my time and avoid movies that I won't like! Of course I always read the plot first and decide based on that, but then I check the rating and this determines if I am going to watch it or not!
Are you affected by the film ratings in your decision to watch it or not?

I would have no interest in the ratings whatsoever, and select a movie purely according to whether the subject appeals to me. I have seen several movies that were highly acclaimed but were quite uninspiring to me and also have really enjoyed some movies that were considered poor by the critics etcetera. Due to our diverse tastes there are movies that some people will dislike and movies that they will enjoy, along with people who like and dislike them in the reverse order.

I totally agree with you asylum. Also just because the critic didn't like the movie doesn't mean you wont. Or just because they like it doesn't mean you will since we all have different tastes. Also i have seen movie that got bad ratings i have enjoyed and movies that got good ratings i have not liked. All a rating is is someones opinion on a movie and not truth or fact about it just what you like.

I was never checking the ratings until I started watching tv shows. The ratings were my main source of decision for them and they were usually correct. Then I tried the same with films, when people rated them as bad I didn't like them most of the times. I have to say that I realised that they were rated low after watching them. So I started watching the ratings at that particular site and I trust them a lot!

there are a lot of hyped movies but almost half of them are trash. i honestly read reviews from people online. not the rotten tomatoes site but in other forums like this one. i feel like they are more honest and not that too critical in reviewing the movies.

Sites like rotten tomatoes have some critics that I find hard to understand! lol
I prefer reading critics that are simple and "to the point" without being mean and negative. Imdb has some good critics, even for films that are not so popular that is why I go there most of the times.
Mylot has some very useful and honest opinions as well!
Thanks for your comment!

Yes, I will check the IMDB rating so that I can estimate whether this is a good movie or not. Usually the high rating means that this will not be a boring movie. However, the interesting fact is if a movie with a very low rating, then people will be much more curious to it and want to watch it to find out why the rating is so low.

I check the same site as well! Have you noticed that they watch films just because they have low ratings?
I haven't thought about it to be honest! I guess it sounds reasonable now that you've mentioned it, for some people. I wouldn't like to watch bad films so I just check the good ones, unless they sound very interesting so I might as well watch some of the films that have a rating around 5/10.

A lot of times I do, especially on websites like IMDb and film reviews for films I read of for the first time. If the rating is really high (or really low for that matter) it might pique my curiosity. I might want to see that movie more and wonder why many people gave that movie such a high or low rating.

Really? Someone else also said that this happens! I never see low rated films unless I forget to see he rating and decide at the last moment! But I do see most of the high rated film if I am interested in the plot. For example, there is a well rated film called Ted, I am hesitant in watching it because I am not sure I like the concept of the story! Eventually I might watch it out of curiosity!

I've never left the cinema or slept in there! But I can understand that if you found that the film was terrible you wouldn't like to waste any more of your time.
But when I rent dvd's at home I might close the dvd and watch something else if I think it's really bad.

Yes and no... YES, I check for those movies that the actors and directors are not 'that well-known'. Most of indie films are good and I watch some of it. And NO, I don't go looking for the ratings when it comes with my favorite actors.

Sometimes the movie ratings can be misleading, what may be rubbish to the person who has seen it and written up about it might be great to someone else. I will read the rating to see what has been said about the film but will make my own mind up whether I will watch the film or not, usually my father will recommend a film to me, he knows what sort of films I like, and 90% of the time he will be right, even if he's already seen the film previously.

I think it's better to watch a movie before seeing the ratings. Somehow the ratings would influence you and make a judgement before you get to see it yourself. Further, I don't want to be biased. We all have different opinions about everything and I'd like to critic it myself.
So, I never watch ratings.
Have a great mylot experience ahead!

I don't listen to or read the ratings of a movie. I don;t because sometimes the movie will get a bad rating and i might still like it. I usually go by what my hubby tells me about the movie because when he likes a movie ti usually is good and when he doesn't it usually isn't good. Tho i really just read the plot of a movie and watch all the previews of a movie and then see it a decide for myself. If it was bad oh well. Tho i don't like spending money o a movie i didn't like, but you don't know u don't like it til you see it.

That is true, bad reviews don't always mean that you won't like the film. Similarly, good reviews don't mean that you will enjoy it. I trust my freind's opinions as well and when they propose films I always make sure to check them out.
But reviews and ratings are quite helpful for me, especially with movies that I've never heard before. They give me an idea of what I should wait to see!

NO, the film rating doesn't affect me. If I want to see a film, I read the synopsis or rarely I watch to the trailer. If I found that film interesing I watch it. I really don't read the comments about that film and also I doesn't care about the ratings because many films that I watched and it impress myself have a bad rating. The rating is etablish about them criteria that aren't the same like my criteria. So, why I do that before?

I am looking at ratings from people that have watched the film not from the experts. I hope that they are more representative to the public opinion about the movies and I rate them too afterwards. I used to be like you, I was renting dvd's at my local video place and had only read the plot summary. Now I've made it too complicated with the trailer, the rating etc! lol

No, I check the artists, I know good actors will not take a project that will give them a "boo" record or a flop record. and yes the plot if it is okay. the trailer is also a big help for me. Though the trailer shows only the best parts of the film. Rating, no i don't go by the rating.

Sometimes I might be interested in a movie and read that it's a bad one. It's very possible that I won't watch it eventually!
Also, I am searching for good movies to watch based on the lists they have online. When I don't have anything in mind, I will see what's popular and watch that if it sounds interesting!

No for being an adult now, I felt guilty watching horror movies when I was 10 and even younger, and growing up I was a little hurt realizing my mother always knew and let us rental that, we had nightmares but kids will do whatever triggers their curiosity so I couldn't stop watching them even when we both had nightmares (my and my sibling.)

After watching lots of series, I learned to select them based on the ratings, and the type of the show of course! But this has also affected my film preferences somehow and now I always check it even for films!
Not looking at the ratings or the reviews might be better because you watch the movie without having an impression on it beforehand!

There are a lot of movies that are not rated properly. I don't really check the reviews beforehand, just the plot if I like it or not. Even with blockbuster movies, if i don't like the plot then i won't watch it. There are a lot of good movies out there that are not rated properly and the reviews are limited only.

No I don't check the ratings, they can be misleading. I rather read about it then make my own decision before watching it. Ratings will tell you it's a good movie and it be a bad one and a bad one when in fact will be a good one.
