Movies that end suddenly and leave everything unexplained! Would you watch them?

I am a movie fan and I always appreciate a good movie! But I hate it when the story ends abruptly, leaving all possibilities open! I've seen two movies this year that ended this way! One of them is called "Sounds of my voice" which was a great movie but ended without revealing what really happened and it left me with questions! I watched the second tonight, it's called "Your sister's sister" and it's a drama film that also ends leaving everything open! When the critical moment came, the ending titles came up! What do you think about films that end suddenly, have you watched anything similar lately?

These kinds of endings have a name, open-ended films. They are those films that don't leave you with a resolve, or leave you with some unsettling questions. I've seen a few, and to be honest, I despise them even more than movies that have sad endings. At least a sad ending is a resolution of some kind. An open ending leaves you with nothing but a bunch of questions. At the moment, I'm remembering 48 Angels, The Thing (1980s version), and Inception. Well... 48 Angels fits more into what you're saying, something that ends kind of suddenly. The other two just throw you one last curve-ball that leaves you wondering. Anyway, I prefer my films resolved.

We should be warned for the open ending then, if it's a tactic! :-) I just think that everything in life will go one way or another, why can't that film give us the satisfaction to see what's that turn? It's like telling a story and stop at the most critical part, would your audience like it? The only think that I could think of, is to give two alternative endings, this would be a bit better!

Well, at the end of Inception I admit that I too was wondering what had just happened, but I thought about it some more and realized that he was still dreaming (that's why the top never stopped spinning). I guess it would have been nice to know what happened to the rest of the team, but then again I think that may have ruined the movie's reputation. I recently saw "Seven Psychopaths" (although I'm not a big fan of Colin Farrell) and that movie had a whole bunch of twists and turns. When the movie ended I was getting ready to leave the theater with that disappointed "what happens next" thought in my mind, but 1 minute into the credits a scene started playing that gave me a bit of clarification on the ending, which was nice. I can't stand movies that just end abruptly (and with no trivial conclusion for you to think about) but movies with sudden twists at the end are by far my favorites. My favorites would include: The Departed, Seven Psychopaths, Inception, Shutter Island, etc. All in all, you're not alone with this belief.

Besweet, some people like open endings. I'm just not one of them. I also think it would be better to have alternative endings than having an open ending... but really I prefer a precise and closed ending. I don't think every open-ended movie should carry a warning label... there are lots of things that I don't like in films, but I don't think every film should have a warning for those things. LTCKilgore, Inception was a more resolved open-ending, but the ending was the only part of the film I didn't like because it left a major question open and I hate films that do that. It doesn't clearly mean that he's still dreaming, that's why it's open. I might have liked the movie a tad more if it was certain, but I'd consider that a bit of a downer ending and I'm not someone who likes those at any rate. I'm probably just different from you though.

Sometimes, they leave it open in the event they decide to do a sequel. But, sometimes, they leave it open so you can use your imagination and fill in the blanks. I've also noticed that a lot of the hints about what happens are very vague, so you have to kinda read between the lines, as it were. There was a Nicholas Cage movie (for the life of me, I can't remember the title) about aliens and the end of the world. At the end, a boy and a girl were saved and taken to another place. The last scene showed them running through a meadow toward a tree. That was it. I later figured out that they were running toward the tree of knowledge in order to learn and begin the world over. Like I said, somethings are very easy to miss.

The movie was "Knowing", and it was about a man who was able to "see" events before they happened, including the end of the world. He was able to interpret enough to "save" his children by sending them away with "aliens" to a safe place. Good movie.

Hi! I don't think I have seen this movie although I like Nicholas Cage, I must have missed it or it's an older film. I like having some clues and get an ending for the film that I am watching. I can understand that it is enjoying for the audience to think during the movie, it's also challenging! But I like leaving the cinema with a sense of completeness, that comes with the ending. There are people that really enjoy the open endings though and I like talking with them or listening to their scenarios afterwards! I just feel better if I know what happened! :-)

I absolutely hate films like that and no matter how fascinating the story may seem during the film it is totally destroyed when that happens. The interest is usually maintained through the film because we are curious as to the explanation behind it and look forward to the revelation, which does not even exist and we have simply been conned. This also applies to television series and has occurred a few times lately. In particular I watched with great interest the television series Alcatraz, in which the inmates and guards mysteriously disappeared and were reappearing decades later. I was intrigued at how this would be explained and avidly watched every episode while awaiting the final outcome. The series finally ended and I have no more idea than I had at the start of episode 1 because it simply faded away with no explanation whatsoever. I consider this level of deception to be totally unacceptable.

I feel the same way, as long as they supply an explanation then the film has been worthwhile.

I haven't watched Alcatraz but I know from other series that this is made on purpose to create high interest for the next epeisode, the next season etc. I also agree that everything in the film is created around a story that needs to end somehow, or even give clues about the ending or what happened! Some films also give with subtitles what happened withe ach character at the end. This completes the film and it satisfies me as a viewer.

No of course not. I would not choose to watch a movie like that. But how am I to know that the movie will end that way before I have seen the ending? I think that when a movie ends abruptly that the producer is counting on the movie being so popular and bringing in so much money and he is hoping for a sequel to the first movie. I can't recall any movie that I have seen lately by name, but I do recall sitting in the theater lately and saying at the end of the movie that there will be another movie after this one!

I agree that it is often considered as a good prequel and the producers hope that it will attract you to watch a sequel, but it is never going to inspire me to do so. If they produce a film without a realistic ending then there is no reason for me to believe that the next one will supply an answer, so I would avoid it for certain.

This new trend is not like it used to be! If you ever see the movies that I've mentioned you will be annoyed like me. I am reading short reviews most of the times before watching a film so I know what I am expecting. I didn't read anything about the open ending at last night's film though!

oh yes i hate such movies too because they leave with the curiosity to watch the next part but unfortunately they don't have part 2s. i have watched several but they are quit annoying.

If there is a part 2 I understand that they want to keep the audience waiting for it! But when there is not, it just feels pointless for me to leave it open. It's not my style either, I prefer seeing an ending.

well i would still watch them, because i love thinking of different things, especially things that people dont usually think about. in my case one of the movies i watched that left everything open was "The Lakehouse"

I've watched the lakehouse and it was a wonderful movie! I think it was a complete story that was very well presented and left some things for the imagination. This is acceptable. The new trend it to cut the film when I thought they would at least give 15 more minutes to create an ending, like leaving out the last chapter of a book. I understand that people like this open ending technique and I am still a bit upset from my film last night! Sorry :)

I hate it when I see a movie like that. I know it always leaves it open for another movie but it would be nice to see some kind of ending. Sometimes I go ahead and read the book if there is one, I like knowing the endings.

The last film that I've watched didn't meave much for a second part! I think that was all! No ending, no sequel and no book! But if there is a book I want to read it as well!

i kinda like movies like that, but also it makes it look like the director was too lazy to finish the story. one i remember was called the wrestler where it showed the leading actor jumping off the top rope and it ended.

It's probably a trick from the directors! People talk about it afterwards making scenarios about the alternative endings and it becomes popular so that more people will watch it! I now that there are a lot of fans for movies with open endings, there are a lot of excellent reviews for the film that I watched titled "Your sister's sister". But it's not my style!

i also get annoyed to watch a movies like that and mostly i dislike horror movies because at the end i am left always guessing since it ended like a big question mark to me. the main reasons because the movies would still have a part 2 so the watching them keep you at guess what the next movies is all about. this often keep a climax a suspense. but surely i like a movies that have a clear ending so i get to the worth of my money and it would not waste my time watching garbage movies.

I also think that teh ending is very important for a film, as it is for a good book as well! When I am asked for my opinion about a film, I always comment about the story, and if I liked the ending. But without a proper ending I feel like it's incomplete! Some people like it this way, but I tend to avoid watching open ending movies.

Hi, In writing parlance, it is called a hanging conclusion. The story ends but it doesn't really end there. One purpose is for the reader to make a guess about the resolution of the conflict or make out the ending of it. It is one style to keep the suspense, executed sloppily makes for a bad and an unsatisfactory reading or movie material. Few authors ever mastered the hanging conclusion style, I forgot some of them already but they do make good stories out of it.

I guess that there are films that have succeded this technique. This particular one that I watched last night did not! It was a good, watchable film but the ending was dissapointing. I guess the abrupt ending might work with action, mystery and horror films but with dramas it's harder.

This phenomenon happens in all kinds of movies, and actually it is some kind of commercial methods, the movie maker want you to looking forward to the next series, and this why there are many movies will have series I,series II,series III and so on.And secondly, this is also want you to think about this movie more and deeply then this movie can earn more point in some movie awards.

Hmm, maybe you're right! This method is not working with me though.. Even if there is a sequel, the writer needs to give some clues. If a sequel was planned to come out I don't know if I would give my time to watch it, although this is not a kind of movie that would have a sequel!

I also had watched movies that has the same ending. It's quite upsetting because you still want more from it but it ended abruptly leaving you with no clue of what really happened with the story. But sometimes, movies like these makes me think and curious. Usually, movies with this kind of endings are the ones with sequels like Harry Potter.

Some people like this kind of films but they're really not my style! I stayed with a big question last night, that would determine how the life of the main characters would turn out to be! I like making some assumptions but it's not possible to leave everything to our imagination!

Thanks for your comment! You are the first that I've found who have watced this film! I am happy that you agree with me, if you see this movie then you can understand how it feels like! After the last scene, I was waiting for a new video to appear between the end titles showing a picture of the future but nothing happened! lol

I HATE when movies do that to me! It will be an amazing movie the whole way through and then the end I feel like stuck! I hate it. It kills a good movie for me. I wish they would just tell you before you watch it-there is NO ending to this movie! It would save me a LOT of time. Lol. I cannot think of one I watched recently like that but I have seen some of them and it drives me nutty!

That's exactly what happened to me last night! It was a good movie, not great but I enjoyed it a lot! Then at the last scene, they were going to get an answer that would determine how their life would continue and the image went black! I really want to give you the ending to show what I mean but it's going to be a huge spoiler and I hate it when others do it to me!

I have watched movies that end only on the main character. However, if one will review the story some will question, "what happen to her or him?" There were unexplained situation with no ending to some of the characters. I think it is not a good movie. Thanks for this. Have a nice day!

Hi! Yes, some movies have holes in the plot and leave some characters behind without ever explaining what happened to them! The film that I watched didn't even say what happen to the main characters. They were waiting for an answer that would change their lives and the movie finished right there. We never saw the answer!

I've watched several of them. If I could I would avoid these movies however unfortunately the only way I'll know if they end badly is to watch them. The Devil Inside was like that. One of the worst movies I've seen in 2012.

Don't worry about the double comment! :) I haven't seen the Devil Inside, I avoid watching horror film alone and no one wanted to watch this with me! Especially in horror films I want to see the ending, unless there is a sequel and they are planning to continue the story with the second part!

Yes, and had I of known they were going to end that way I would of passed. I hate movies with had endings. Especially ones that just sort of stop out of nowhere. The devil inside was like that for me. When I saw that in the theater I was either pissed because it was so bad or laughing depending on the point in the movie.

I think it is a method that the director tries to leave some space for imagination to audience. We know that each movie will be twingled with some personal emotions or ideas from the director. But a hundred person have hundred ideas to a case, and most of them are different. The blank ending desinged gives an opprtunity for being director once to eveyone. All of us can have a wide imagination about how the ending will develop. Sometimes a sad movie usually gets a sad ending, while a comedy usually get a happy one. Oftern the director on purpose show a surprised one to make all feel fresh. A blank one will not offer such a passive acceptence, but a large empty space for imagination. Some people may favour this kind of expression of art and some may not. And sometimes a really exciting movie without ending will disappoint much audience indeed, bacause we have been accustomed and waited for the most wonderful period.

Hello! You have put it in an interesting way and I agree. I am one of the people that judge the film from the ending as well. I like imagining things in the film and make some details in the way I like them, but I appreciate an ending to the film. It's like watching a horror film and find the house of the killer. When you reach the front door the film ends. You don't get to see if the killer was in the house or not. That's the horror version of the feelings I got from drama film that I watched! Anyway, of course I accept it that many people might like this kind of ending but it's not my style for sure!

Yes, I like it when it hangs at the end like horror movies. But i don't like drama and not so much of horror like zombie and all. I like something that will make me think what happend and what will happend. and I know that there will be a second part of it.

Action and horror movies like the ones you describe always have a sequel! You as well might find interesting the "Sound of my Voice" film, it's a mystery film about a cult leader that claims to be from the future and she is being investigated from people who think she is a fraud. You will be able to make your own assumtions and think a lot at the end. But I would prefer if they would actually say what's the truth at the end!
