I am going to have to get a new laptop in the next year or so. I thought I should start researching it now. I want to get a 4-6GB one with great optics. I havent heard any bad things about WIndows 8 yet so I am sure I will want that. But I doubt I can afford another Dell(have had four of them and all good) so which of these would be a good way to go: Toshiba, Gateway or Acer. Have you had atleast two of any of these? Do you agree with the statement that most laptops now days are about the same? Your thoughts please.

I still don't try those mention above but my friend told me not to buy Del because of the poor performance. My HP laptop was already 4 going to 5 years now. There are times I thought I'm going to replace it with a new one but only cleaning is required and now it is running so smoothly still on windows vista. I think the statement is true they are all the same only we can determined on how we handle our laptop.

I have to say that I am very satisfied with Acer and Toshiba. I had an Acer for 4 years until I messed it up. I did it cleaning it. So it wasn't a software thing..it was the owner..lol. I have a Toshiba now. It has been good so far. I have had it for about a year. I have to be honest...I got really used to the Acer. If you do get something less than 4 GB..you can always add a flashdrive which only costs about $15 and increase your speed and space with it. Or you can do it with a 4-6 GB too.

In my own opinion, i would still go for toshiba or dell for the quality of hardware and whole unit itself. Depending on the specs, i mean the higher the specs, the higher the price, would surely be an advantage as quality has a price. But i all depends on the right use by the user to make it last longer.

Yes, Dell is still number one in my book. It is just too expensive for me anymore. Thanks for you input. Two marks for Toshiba.

Acer and Gateway are both excellent brands under the Acer Group. My netbook and my husband's laptop are by Acer, and both our desktops are Gateway. My mom has a Gateway laptop, too. We haven't had a single problem with any of them, and we're not really gentle with them. Hubby is into video game development and runs his design software and a bunch of games like Guild Wars 2 and World of Warcraft. I'm a photographer and use my netbook to work on images in Lightroom and Photoshop when I'm on the road. I don't agree that most laptops are about the same when it comes to quality. The Acer netbook is by far the best portable computer I've owned. I've been very impressed with it, especially because I can run demanding, memory-intensive programs like Lightroom and Photoshop simultaneously and not have it overheat on me. In fact, it barely gets warm to the touch even when I've been working on photos for an hour or two. My last laptop was an HP that overheated from web browsing and word processing, so that was a very welcome change. When you're ready to buy, check out Newegg.com. It's one of the best sites I've found to buy computers from. Hubby's desktop and laptop came from there. I got my netbook from Amazon because it was cheaper than Newegg, but Amazon's search features aren't great unless you already have a specific model in mind.

I have went with Toshiba and so has everyone in my family. It is a great laptop, have not had any problems with it at all. My laptop cord on the other hand for it I had a problem with, it burnt out. BUT I called customer service about it and they are sending me out a brand new one! Customer service was also very helpful and good. I really have no complaints. I have a 6GB one. I have not heard good things about Acer but of course it is up to you...I am not sure on Gateway though at all, never dealt with them and don't know anyone else who has either...

With over 15 years experience fixing and selling laptops I can tell you they are not all the same. Toshiba used to be the market leader but their build quality has slipped, Acer and Gateway are cheap junk. Dell is better but source components by price so components may differ in identical models. Best buy are HP,Compaqs my advice would buy a refurbished business machine at a fraction of new price. Stick with Windows 7. If you we in UK I could sell you one for £150 all the best, urban

My husband bought a Toshiba after our having a Dell for years and it was great. Acer, he said he'd heard lots of people at work liked it. Stay away from Gateway. I have a friend who has one and I tried to teach her on it, I swear it's possessed. You wouldn't believe the problems simple tasks are on the foolish thing. We've had to bring it back to best buy often.

i reality i never consider the brand the main thing to consider when buying a new laptop i think brand like toshiba or gateways are not bad and normally their pc are good and durable naturally it depends for which purposes you need it and so choosing the right model for you as regards acer i had bad experiences using this brand also because i felt a strange hardware used to build the pc so in general i never trust about this pc producer...

Hi celtic, Toshiba's have nothing but problems. I am a huge fan of Dell. To me, another Dell is the way to go. I had a Gateway once, and it turned out to be a lemon.

I wish I could afford another Dell. I have had three others. But unless they have a good deal on HSN I doubt I would be able to afford one.

If you already have a working laptop then why would you waste money on another one?? I doesnt make much sense to me since there are poeple out in this world who dont have food on there table to feed there families, and people are losing there jobs. it would make more sense to spend the extra money you have on something that would either help others or better for your life that u NEED not WANT. theres a big difference.

Yes, I do have a working machine right now. It is a refurbished one and I would like to upgrade to Windows 8. I like to replace my computer every 4-5 years. They get dirty and I like the new one. If I could save the world I certainly would. Being a writer I like to have a new one.

Because a machine only lasts about 4-5 years and then needs to be replaced or rebuilt. There are all kinds of technical reasons. Just like anything else a laptop gets old and the parts are old. And some make aliving online.

I just dont understand why people are so ignorant and does not use the ones they have. There are more important things to buy then a laptop. Just saying.
