Knitting My Fingers to the Bone!

My First Earflap Hat! - Knitted on circular needles. I think it came out quite well. Made 2 with this design.

I recently learned a new trick. A friend taught me how to knit on circular needles. I have made about 18 hat. Some with earflaps, some without. At first I was a little worried that I would never be able to knit on the circular needles. My friend is a patient person and told me that I would do just fine. She was right! I am love knitting in the round and find it hard to pick up my projects that use the 2-needle method. Remember, you can teach an old dawg a new trick. You just need to relax and keep your mind open to the new experience. The hats are gifts to my family and friends. Do you make your own gifts? Can you knit on circular needles?

I can't knit at all. At least, not anymore. We did this in highschool. It was one of our art projects. Our teacher told us to pick a little complicated design. It it's too simple, we get a low grade. I picked a flowery design, and I thought I could do it. I ended up depending on my mom for finishing 90% of it.

I am still pretty basic with my designs, but hope to later learn how to do some intricate work.

I knit with ordinary needles, circular needles, 4 needle knit, and use round looms and rake looms. Knitting is relaxing and fun-- and I make gifts for Christmas, usually. This year I made scarves and hats primarily, but I also knitted some slippers for others, and crocheted some for me. I also have a knitting machine for big project-- a manual one, not an electric. It makes afghan panels knit up very quickly-- then I join them together with lots of decorative crochet or knitting.

I had a manual knitting machine, but never used it. My ex-idiot bought it for me. When we split, I donated it to the Goodwill.

I only use it for afghans, because it is quick and easy for those. I frequently make lap rugs for the local senior home that way, the seniors love them and it uses up donated/free yarn. Other than that, I don't see the point, because I like to knit, for relaxation if nothing else. I whipped up a new dishcloth last night, as a matter of fact.

I've never had the opportunity to learn to knit, although there have been times that I wished I knew someone would be able to teach me to knit. I do know how to crochet and I use those skills on a regular basis to make gifts for friends or family members that are getting married or having babies. This year for Christmas, there are two Christmas presents that I'm going to be making and both of the gifts that I'm making this year are using digital art. I'm making a recipe book for my mother and a personalize calendar for my mother-in-law.

Great ideas! I use to make calendars for all of my family, complete with birthdays, anniversaries, and other important dates. I have made a recipe file for my kids. That way they can have their favorite recipes that I made for them!

Hi Elusive, I wish I could knit...I actually attempted to learn but the person that was teaching me could only knit left handed so thats the deal with that because I just could not get it ...But knitting with a round needle is something that I would be interested in learning...that sound like it could be something I might could do.. But no I do not knit anything or make any gifts except I make hae made cakes for the people at the medical facility where I go..one year I went in with 7 of the small oblong tins of yellow cake with cream cheese and pineapple with a beautiful bow on each...they enjoyed them...I gave 7 faculty each a cake.. I did feel good when doing that...

Baking is also a good way of expressing yourself. It does feel good to see a smile when you give someone you have made.

Looking good! Did you start from the top or the bottom?

Start at the bottom. It was tricky at first doing the flaps but became a pro in no time at all.

I can crochet up a storm but I can't knit. I have tried it many times. I don't know what I do wrong but it doesn't turn out right. Good for you that you can! I make cards in set and give as gifts. And I have in the past made many of my gifts.

I usually start one in the evening and finish it the next day. I knit whenever I get a free moment. Yes, I do sell them. I have 3 finished and waiting for pick-up.

I don't know how to knit but there was a time when I did cross-stitching. I loved it and often made things for other people. It was very time consuming though so it never worked out for me when I would try to stitch gifts for the holidays...lol.

Oh I tried cross-stitch too. As you said, it is time consuming. I prefer projects that work up quick!

I made dishcloths a couple of years back. Now that I have refined my skills I may try other patterns.

I also tried knotting when I was younger. I saw how beautiful my mom made the bed cover and got interested about it. However, I think knitting isn't really for everybody. I could just make a few strokes then fail. So I gave up. But am sure happy that you found yourself a new hobby. And thinking of making something as Christmas presents for friends is surely lovely.

I have been knitting for about 44 years now. I just recently decided to challenge myself and use other methods than using 2 needles.

Unfortunately, I cannot knit on circular needles. The only gift that I did with my own bare hands was cooking crab in coconut milk and my friends and family ate them together. It was very cozy and memorable. If only I can knit, I might be knitting my fingers to the bones as well just like you!

When I was young my mom tried to teach me to knit. She put on the first row, I put on the 2nd row. I couldn't get the needles in to knit the 3rd row, my mom said I was knitting to tight. That was the last time I ever knitted. Both my sisters knit.
