My deposit disappeared!

Yesterday during my lunch break I went down to my credit union to take out the money we had in there. Hubby's paychecks are deposited into the credit union since he can't get an account elsewhere due to an old chexSystems problem that is paid off but hasn't cleared up yet.
So I took the money and deposited $460 cash into my checking account at my bank where I work. This, in addition to my cash was to pay our bills and buy groceries and gas for the week.
Last night I got into my online banking to balance my checkbook. The deposit was there, everything was right, no problem.
This morning I checked my balance to see if anything had gone through, and the balance was wrong. I looked through my transactions and did not see the deposit!
Thankfully the bank is open on Saturday, so I shot down there to figure out where my money had gone.
Unfortunately they did not have any answers for me. They have to look into it, and it could take up to 5 days!!
And that just sucks because I paid a $550 bill last night which ate up most of my money. Without that extra $460 that I put in there we can't afford groceries, gas, or our daycare bill this week!
I'm hoping they find it by Monday and everything turns out okay. I guess until then I can't worry about it to much because I've done everything I can do.
Has something like this ever happened to you?
It's really too bad I work for this bank, otherwise I'd be causing a much bigger stink, but I'm trying to remain calm because I don't want my emotions to jeopardize my job.
I don't know, maybe I should open an account elsewhere so that my work and my finances don't ever cross paths like this again? Plus I no longer have much faith in my bank since this deposit disappeared!!
What would you do?

Since it was a cash deposit I would ask about your receipt. . . you do have one, right? Only time I ever had this problem I put cash in a night deposit. It disappeared and never was found. I would probably put my money in the credit union with hubby, as in general they are more reliable. As you have said, you cannot do anything about it, so worrying is not going to help. How this bank handles this situation will tell you a lot about it.

I do have the receipt.. and since I made the deposit at my own bank, I also have the other teller's word for the fact that I made the deposit. I'm not sure why it was lost.. but I'm hoping to know more by Monday.
The trouble with the Credit Union is that we don't have ATM cards or checks for this account.. they gave us a savings account but wouldn't open a checking for us. Plus they demand that we keep $25 in the account at all times. It's not one of those where they charge a fee if we don't.. we just aren't allowed to touch it. Doesn't sound like much to most people, but to us most weeks we get our balance down to just change so we really need that $25.

You have your bank deposit slip? I would definitely be producing that, and I would also make a stink. If any of your bills are not paid because of overdrafts it will be the fault of the bank, whether you work there or not, this whole situation could be disastrous for you and your family. I would be switching banks. I had $100 disappear from my account, and I no longer bank with that bank. Money is hard to come by these days for someone to make such a big mistake like that.

They will reverse any fees I incur due to their error, once they figure out where the deposit went.

As a rule, the only time I deposit money in the bank is during the day. I make certain that I keep the receipt for at least a week or more. I never, ever make a cash deposit into my account after banking hours.

I normally use the ATM and never have trouble with that.

That's horrible. In no uncertain terms I would spell out every thing that is going to now plague you due to their error. Expound on the worry you will be under, the possible fees you might have for late payments. And instead of sounding angry when I talked to them, I'd try to sound pathetic and worn down. They need something to kick them in the butt.

Sadly that won't help me. Once they find it and put it back in my account, it will cover everything I've spent so I should not incur any fees.. If I do I'll raise a stink then. The only worry I have is if they don't put it back for some strange reason.. but again, I will then throw a stink.
Right now I'm trying to have faith that they'll figure out their error and put the money back with no problems!

I have had debits that were processing on my account go missing before, but never a deposit. I rarely deposit cash, but when I make a deposit I rarely keep my receipt. I use the bank that you work for here in my city. 99% of the time I use the ATM to make deposits or withdraw money.
I really do hope they figure out the money by Monday, so you don't have to worry too much about things not clearing and still be able to afford groceries. I would probably be freaking out just the same.
I always wondered about people who worked at banks and if they always had an account where they worked or if they left their work and money separate. I almost think I would want my money at another bank.

Well I get discounts for banking with them, naturally. I get prime interest rates, no maintenance fees.. I have the best type of checking account, the type only rich people have that requires $2,500 minimum balance, and I get it for free. I also get free checks, money orders.. blah blah blah.
I usually use the ATM also, but I don't have my pin memorized yet.. and yesterday because I was on lunch I had to be quick, so I just brought it inside to do there instead of spending more time at the ATM.
There is a small part of me freaking out and thinking the worse. I mean I did everything by the book.. a different teller did the deposit for me as I can't do my own transactions. But I ran the work at the end of the day, so I'm wondering if they're seeing that I ran the work and taking that as I did the deposit myself? I mean it's obvious I didn't because we each have a teller number and the work has her number on it, not mine. So they can see she did the deposit. There are also cameras that will show me handing her the cash.. and we both balanced so it's obvious we didn't fudge up the cash anywhere. They can audit me if they want.. actually I do get audited at least once a month.
That's probably not it.. but it's a thought in my head, you know. It's probably just a computer error and they'll straighten it out Monday, hopefully.

No it has never happened to me, but I always keep the receipts of my deposits and I prefer doing my transactions inside the bank. Although I do that sometimes to save time, when I want to deposit money I always go to the cashier inside the bank and ask for the new balance after the deposit is completed. This way I keep good control and I have my balance proof if I ever need it.

I don't think it will go that far. As I said, I work for this bank, so I know how things work.. but I've never heard of a deposit disappearing before, especially when it was there last night.

Sorry, I had the impression that you did that at an ATM, although I noticed now that you haven't mentioned an ATM in your post!
Since you have a receipt I guess they will just have to check their data. You can always act legally with the proof that you have if they start avoiding the subject.

I would not be as calm as you....since you work there they should give you a little extra consideration.....I know what you are saying though..you don't want to lose your job. I have accounts at different banks that way I have a back up account just in case something like this happens. Good luck! HOpefully they will find the problem right away.

I do have the "associate banking" department working on it instead of the regular customer service department.
I used to have my money spread out, but considering we don't have much, it seemed pointless to have multiple accounts.

Oh my gosh! I would not keep your major finances at your work. I don't know what kind of system you have but when I worked at a CU we could see our co-workers transactions and I didn't like that at all. They don't need to know where you spend your money. Though we were required to have an account there to have our payroll deposited into; I would just take mine out and keep an amount in savings and put the rest in my checking elsewhere. And frankly depending on what happened I can't see why it should take 5 days to find out what the problem is!!! Do they have copies of the transactions? The teller you went to should have a paper record of the transaction on her drawer. I know I made errors like putting money into the wrong persons account or into a savings instead of checking but we usually found it right away and notified the customer of the error.
GL I hope nothing bounces!!!

We don't keep paper copies of transactions anymore.. they're scanned and then shipped out the same day, but it will be on the system somewhere. I'm hoping they figure it out on Monday.

Just go to the bank if you have problems about your balance. You can transfer another bank account for your safety.

hi katsmeow I deposited a one hundred dollar bill .it was a christmas gift and when I got my statement I w as only credited with ten dollars deposit.Did I ever
burn up the 800 number to my bank to make my complaint. I got a snippy woman who maintained banks never make errors then she said" do you want to file a complaint?"I told her of course and she was going to help me fill it out but I said'"Please get your manager as you are not taking this huge error seriously. So I talked to the male supervisor who was entirely sympathetic and said"Of course banks can make errors as these a re humans working there." So in ten days they ran down the error and I got ninety more dollars credited to my account.I d o hope they can facilitate your missing money and get it back into your account.I would have changed banks but my bank is just a block away so I stayed there.Like that manager said"banks hire human beings and human beings do make mistakes.{ so I hope they will straighten it all out and get your money back in your account.

I would double check to find out if I had my receipt. It os awkward because you work there but this should make them regard it as a priority shouldn't it? You need to be politely firm as you have bills to pay and they should understand this. My experience with credit unions has been good in the past. This only ever happened to me once when I used a deposit box inside of the bank and the slip was not stamped and I did not notice. It was cleared up but oh, what a waste of time it took to clear up
I do hope you get it cleared up on Monday

I do have the receipt. I went in this morning and had to call "associate banking" as that's the area that deals with this sort of stuff. I read them all the information off the receipt so hopefully it does get taken care of. I'll see what happens come Monday and go from there.

I am sorry to what had happened with your bank. I would like to share that similar to this experienced of yours happened to me last month and up to now, there is still no result!!!
Last month, I am trying to withdraw 45,000 in our bank account through ATM. Depending on what type of account that you have, you can withdraw the maximum amount of 50,000 per transaction. But, what I have have only a maximum of 25,0000 withdrawable amount per transaction. For more than three times, I keep on punching 45,000. And after that, my card had been suspended for the day for punching the maximum pins in a day. But that is wrong! The problem was I punched the wrong amount right?
Since we need the money that day, my husband and I went inside the bank to withraw the amount 45,000. We even tell the bank why it happened and they gave us no answer. The next day, I was surprised to know that the 25,00 was deducted.
I guess banks can't accept the fact that their machine or system had some errors or glithches too. But I am still hoping that the money lost will be returned to us. It is such a big amount and we are having sleepless nights because of this.
I hope your money will be returned too.

That really stinks. I hope they figure it out for you quickly. I had a bank screw up recently too. Normally if I write out a check and not enough is in my account they will just take the money anyway and put my account in the negative. Well this time there wasn't enough in there so they sent me a letter saying the check was being returned. So I got online and paid the bill the check was for. Then when I went to pay my rent I saw that I was missing more money then I should have been. I looked and they ended up taking the check out even though they said it was going to be returned. So I had no money to pay my rent. I went down and talked to them and luckily I was able to put a stop payment on the check and the money was put back in my account.

Actually a lot of times what will happen is if an item gets returned, they'll try to put it through again a few days later. I know this happens with both checks and debit payments. So it may be that the bank did return it, but then the check casher tried to cash it a second time and it went through that time.
You also have to ask about the bank's policies on overdrafts. My old bank would only allow an overdraft every 7 days. Your account had to be in the clear for at least 7 days or they wouldn't honor an overdraft.
They also generally have limits on how far you can overdraw.

What a worry. I hope they can identify the problem very quickly and put you out of your misery.
Here is my appalling bank story.
Years ago, I parted company with someone. I was taking over the mortgage of the house and needed to remove him from the joint account which I was maintaining in my name only for ease.
I arranged a temporary £10,000 loan from the bank to cover the gap whilst the mortgage was processed. Due to an error by the bank, it was not processed when it should have been. The bank organised me an immediate £10,000 overdraft to cover me until the loan was processed, until the mortgage was processed. OK, allot of paperwork, but no problem.
So the next day I phone the bank to ensure that the overdraft has been processed as it should have been. They would not recognise my account number. Turns out that they had removed the WRONG NAME from the joint account, so the entire account was now in the sole name of the other party. They wouldn't tell me that of course because my name wasn't on the account, so I had to spend a couple of hours going absolutely MENTAL in the foyer of the local branch until they confirmed the error.
To make matters really, really serious, the bank had managed to do something right whilst they were cocking up. They had processed my £10,000 overdraft AND paid in the £10,000 loan. So there is an account in my ex-husband's sole name with £20,000 of money available in it which I'm solely responsible for paying back. I suppose I should have been thankful they hadn't paid the mortgage in as well!
Can you imagine how absolutely stratospheric I went when I realised?!!!! I think the whole town heard me go off!
Thankfully the other party and I were on reasonable terms and he had no reason to check the account as he thought he'd been taken off it. But it could have been catastrophic.
The bank took ages to work through the problem as they needed to pull out the original letters talking about the account name removal before they would do anything, obviously. And all that time they would not tell me what was going on 'for security' as it wasn't my account. Once they worked out that they were in the wrong they were very swift in returning it to my name and allowing me access, and to the best of my knowledge the other party never found out that he could have had me for £20,000.
Weirdly, I still have an account with that bank! It's one of the 'big four' in the UK.

Wow, yeah, that could have been catastrophic. Around here it's a big pain to try to remove anyone from an account. It's pretty much easier to just close the account and start over.

Hi friend, sad to hear about this. Do you have deposit slip? it will be a great proof for you to prove that you deposited your money, luckily i don't encounter this kind of problems. Once i had problem with my ATM transaction and it was solved within a week, hope your problem will be solved soon and you will get the deposited money.

Oh my this is impossible , we entrusted money and now gone ? Don't panic they will answer for that and liable to give you back the money but the problem is what if there is an emergency need , where would you run ? That is the hassle there , we place money in bank for our security purposes and convenience . This just teaches us a lesson also , don't place all money in bank , leave some amount at home for emergencies like when its offline and just like your problem now.
