Hello friends,
Of late, I've been very depressed and struggling to handle myself and bring my life to normal, after going through a bad phase in my life.
I've always loved birds and animals, so I'm thinking of bringing a pet to my hostel room so I can have a sweet companion who can take away my pain :) It's become a craze here in my hostel and many have brought pets and kept in their rooms.
I just love rabbits and as I don't like keeping birds in cage and fish in aquarium, I've decided to bring rabbits. I can let them play in my room or on the lawn in front of my hostel. But I'm just wondering if I'll be able to take care of them well. I'm concerned about my books and other things and how I would keep them away from rabbits. And that how I would take care of them, as I don't know much about it.
Please guide me on taking care of rabbits.

I guess you chose a right idea on having rabbits as pets.Rabbits are very cute and adorable, you may teach them some good manners so that they will not really make mess with your room. I guess animals can be easily teach ,just have patience on teaching them. I jope you can have a good company with that rabbit :)

I guess one will be fine for you, coz i think having two rabbits is a bit hard, thinking of the expenses and the time to teach them both.BUt somehow having two rabbit has an advantage because they will accompany each other when you are not around.I hope to see them when you got them buddha!

Yes. I thought of bringing two only for the fact that they can accompany each other. Or else I prefer only one. Since most of the time I or my roommate will be around, I think, as you said, one is better. After the first one settles down I may think of bringing the second..
Sure, I would put up their pix if at all I bring them, jeztrose :)

Maria, that's the only reason for which I want to have a pet now. I've just 4 months left to finish my course and then move to some other place where I get a job. So I may have to either leave back the pet while going or I'll have to roam about carrying them. So, it's not a great idea to buy a pet for just 4 months.
But I'm so stressed out and depressed that I feel only such cute animals can bring back my smile :(

You might like to get a caged small animal or animals like one hamster, two gerbils, two rats or two mice. A rabbit can live in a large hutch. He or she must have food, water and soft bedding. He or she needs an area of grass to run out. A rabbit can get on well with a guinea pig. Some people have a house rabbit. Care must be taken so the rabbit does chew any cables. It sounds like you might get two rabbits. A rabbit run must be large and remember rabbits are good at digging holes.

There is enough grass here, and good place for the rabbits to hop around, but I would be moving from this place and I will have to travel to another place for my job. So I just dropped my plan of having pets as of now.
As you said, if I'm going to have rabbits, I will have two of them and your suggestion of guinea pig with a rabbit is also a very cool one :) I think I will go for one rabbit and one guinea pig :)

hi buddha3 welcome to Mylot.
While we all love bunnies and rabbits, they require a great deal of care.
Most people will buy a bunny for their children and have no concept of the care and maintenence of them.
you cant just let them run loose in your hostel. they will chew on electrical cords, cable cords, etc.
this could short out an appliance or possibly even cause a fire. If they are running free also their urine is quite strong and can damage carpet or other flooring. Also if they are not fed properly their digestive system does not work well.
I used to breed and raise bunnies. did it about 5 years.
if you have more than one bunny and they are male and female be ready for bunnies. as soon as the momma bunny has some she can immediately be bred again if a male gets to her. also you cannot leave a male with a female once she has her babies.
if you are not feeling well I gave up my bunnies and when my dog passed away I now have a kitty. When I do not feel well he will curl up and sleep with me all I have to do is change his litter box, feed him and play with him. Much easier than a bunny, if they do not want to come to you, they run fast and you may have a rough time catching them also.
here is a good link to read on and make a wise choice if you think you still want a bunny good Luck in whatever animal you choose.

Hi marie, thanx for welcoming me, but I'm not very new to mylot, though I've very few posts :)
hmmm you are right and I know I can't let them loose in my hostel. I've planned to confine them to my room and let them free only when I'm around. When I'm busy and not around, I would keep them in a cage.
My only concern is their strong urine..If they urinate more frequently then it's difficult to let them loose in my small room :(

Rabbits are good companions. My friend used to have 10 to 15 rabbits .she even brought the babies (6) to my house one day in a basket. I even have the pictures of those rabbits . you should be able to spare some time with them. They eat all types of vegetables.
Lately my friend has given away all er rabbits to some one else as she was not able to give time to them.

yes of course study well what you can and if you decide to bring them give them time they are good they wont disturb or create any nonsense, it will very nice to see these little creatures walking around us in our room. We can talk to them laugh with them and share all talks which we cannot with others some even respond as they are too intelligent.

You need to really do your research before getting a rabbit. ey need a balance diet, of pellets, hay, and fresh veggies. This cost can really add up, I pay about $150 a month on supplies. It took almost 6 months to free run train my rabbit this meaning not being locked in a cage all day long. They also need the love and attention, my rabbit will start chewing and digging the place up if he doesn't get enough attention.

oohh!! haha :) so sweet and naughty of ur rabbit :)
I have dropped the plan for now, as I would be leaving my present place in 2 months. I'm not sure where I would have to move after two months as I would start working. So I've decided to wait until I'm settled at a place comfortable before bringing a rabbit for my company :)
And as u said, I will have to think about the expenses too, as I am still a student. Thank u so much for ur valuable suggestions :)

I love rabbits. They are lovely and cozy. I`m not sure though how much of your time they will take until you train them. The other thing to think about is whether you have enough room where you live for both of you to be comfortable. Rabbits smell strongly annd that must be taken in account in living in the same room.

Have you asked your classmate? Maybe that would be the end of the discussion. If he says no, then there`s nothing else to say. Human beings come first.
