So we can see and listen to the news. But I find that I listen to the news most of the time. This is because I am usually in another room, cleaning, cooking or doing paper work. By not looking at the TV i don't miss much just because I don't see the pictures. This got me wondering how many people are just like me, listening and not watching?

I can relate to that. I have the TV on all day as well. I listen to whatever is on. My girl friend is usually watching something, so what ever she is watching I am listening to. The only thing that annoys me is that she watched Fox news in the morning and watches Imus. I cannot stand Fox or Imus. I wish she would watch a less bias news channel. And I prefer Howard Stern. But, yes, I have the TV all day long and sometimes all night.

Well, like I said. I can relate. My girl friend always watches Fox news and Imus. I cannot stand that channel at all. I let her know that. She told me that when she used to live with her sister and brother in law, she got used to watching it. Her brother in law is a republican and only watches Fox. So it seems like became a habit for her. I told her there are many news channels out there that are way better. I also close the door or put the headphones on just not to listen to it. It is an evil network. They hate everyone. I was also thinking about removing Fox from the channel line up by blocking it. LOL. I don't think sage would help this one. LOL.

I'm like that too, back in the Philippines. Due to time constraint, I have to manage my time and multi-task to make the most out of limited time. Just like you, while the television is on and tuned in to my favorite show, I would do household chores and even Mylot. I would glance at the television every now and then to catch a glimpse of something interesting then go back to my chores and continue what I'm doing.

Like you, I rarely actually watch the news on TV. I'm either listening from the kitchen, doing my exercises or doing some handwork (frequently mending) when the news is on.

When I had a TV, I had it in the family room, next to the kitchen. I could see the TV screen from the kitchen so that I could monitor what my children were watching. Often I would be busy and so, I also did more listening to the TV, rather than sitting down and watching it.
Now that my children have left home, my husband and I don't have a TV at all and actually we prefer not having a TV. My home is quieter and more peaceful. Most of the news on TV is negative and the bad news because bad news sells. I prefer to seek out the positive news, and prefer to hear the good things that people are doing.
I get most of my news on the internet and even though I may miss videos of shooting and explosions and accidents, I feel better for not watching all that horrible news.
I would rather do volunteer work and work beside people who are doing some good in the world.

Lately my TV isn't on unless someone else turns it on. I remember when my kids were young and I would listen to what they were watching, cooking, cleaning or other stuff while singing songs from their movies....funniest on I remember was 'whistle while you work' and sweeping the floor.
It's a good thing to listen to the news and knowing what's going on, though. I remember listening to a CD and cleaning and my nephew came knocking on the door telling me about the twin towers. I would have known about it sooner but without having the radio or TV on, I was clueless.

My TV is not on at all during the day. Even when cleaning I may just have music on. As for the TV that goes on at about 7pm till eleven or midnight and I'm watching it. I don't like having the TV on if I'm not watching it mainly because to me its wasting electricity plus it will keep me from doing the others things I need to be doing around the house.

That is like listening to the radio.
My mum used to on the television and watch but
later she will be busy chit chatting or doing some
other tasks. So when I asked her 'Are you watching the
television?"... She will answer "oh yes, I am listening to it!"

I am the same way. Actually, as I type this response, I am listening to a movie that is on the tv and surfing the internet. I guess it's just a habit that I had gotten into when I was in college where I spent hours on end typing papers and things like that but also wanting to watch television shows or movies. I had to learn to multitask. Also, I have always needed a little background noise to aid in my focus. That usually comes in the form of the television being on. My television is on for what I would say is about two-thirds of each day.

I am like that too, in the morning as i put on my make-up in our bedroom. The TV is on , on the news channel, because i want to hear the news.
My mother-in-law is that way. She would switch one the TV on the news channel and go on with her work. She just listens while she works.

Me, too I like listening to the news and doing something else. I feel like it is a waste of time watching the faces of the anchors or newscasters. but I do like to know what had happened for the day nationally and globally. I don't like to miss any time that I don't know any major events, so I have something share in case, there is a discussion among friends or co workers.

I have always been more of a listener than a watcher. I used to always have a sewing project, but now it seems that often I am on the computer while the television is on in the background. My hubby watches things I do not want to watch but they are not too bad to listen to.

Unless one of my kids is watching television it is not turned on at all. I can't remember the last time I sat down in front of the television to watch something. I can her it right now though. My daughter is watching some kind of Christmas special thing on Netflix that is a bunch of cartoons from the 50's.

Since we have television again (after a several month hiatus), I have gotten back into this habit as well. I usually have a PBS channel or daytime show (Dr. Oz, The Talk, The Doctors...) on and drift in and out of whatever happens to be on.
Part of the reason I have the television on during the day is because of the cats. They seem to enjoy watching it at times... or, at least, napping in front of it and sometimes opening an eye to check out what's on the tube.

I put on the TV at night and many times I fall asleep with the TV on. But I don`t watch the news more than once a day. My mom watches news all day though. And as you do.

I do the same thing since I have other things to do, I just listen to the new and sometimes peep when something caught my interest.
