Have You Noticed That Americans Can't Spell?

It is very frustrating that we let them use our language, yet the insist on mashing it up and dropping letters from perfectly good words. Words that are derived from long lost languages and cultures. Words that have their own hitory.
Those pesky Americans drop the "U" from COLOUR, FLAVOUR, HUMOUR and BEHAVIOUR.
There are some words that make no sense at all. Why would anyone drop the "S" from the end of the word MATHS? MATHS comes from the longer word MATHAMATICS. MATHS being a subject that covers many disciplines. MATHS is a PLURAL word because of what is covers - Addition, Subtraction, Algebra, Pi, Angles, and so on and so on. To use the word MATH would mean that is singular and you would only cover one discipline...
You see my point?

Yes I noticed and have to admit it's confusing me as well if I read discussions over here. I was thinking the way I learned to write English is old fashioned. Might be it's easier to use less letters? Or perhaps they started using the short way while texting?

Thank you for your comments.
My tongue is firmly in my cheek with this one, I know the history of the language and spelling alteration in the US - I am waiting for somebody to start banging on about Noah Webster.
I also hope I didn't make any spelling mistakes in my original post... I will look like a right Herbert if I did

You didn't misspell anything, but you left the letter off a word, thus using a word "the" that you did not intend to use. I think you wanted to say "they." If it will make you feel better, I communicate so much online with Her Majesty's subjects that I'm constantly adding that dropped "u" when I post online, even though I'm American and grew up with American English.

*MathEmatics not Amatics..
- From An American who can Spell. I may not spell it the same as you, and respectfully I do understand your irritation towards the way we spell words, but think also how we pronounce it. We do not pronounce "colour" Ko-Lure we pronounce it Ka-Lurr, so we spell it how we pronounce it.
Make sense? No offense intended, and sorry if your irritated at my jest.

You are wrong - Words are not spelt the way they are prounounced. Colour is not pronouced KO-LURE, it is pronouced CULL-ER
Good spot on the mathAmatics by the way - Even I am prone to unintentional spelling errors.

When I was in school, I could not imagine walking around, telling my friends that I was going to maths class. It makes no sense to me in a sentence. I would be going to math class since it was only one class and on any given day it was usually just one thing we were learning at a time, not all of it at the same time.
So I would say that in certain ways that the word math is used, it could be correct either way.
Now, as for your geography...technically you really didn't specify which of the pesky Americans couldn't spell. Americans covers a wide range of people and places. North America, Central America, South America which are completely different countries and not one place altogether. If you're referring to where I'm at, in the United States of America then I would have to tell you that the English we use here is differently spelled because of all of the different nationalities that came together to speak the language and spell the language differently. This link seems to explain it better than I can. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_and_British_English_differences
Here is another link that I thought was interesting and really, kind of funny as to how words are spelled and spoken in any form of English. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2_dc65V7DV8

Thank you for your comments.
When I say Americans, I mean Americans, Not Mexicans, Brazilians or Canadians, but the people who refer to themselves as Americans.
Your post also highlighted another difference of spelling - In English and not the different varients, we say SPELT and not SPELLED - this is the same for SMELT, DEALT, DREAMT, LEARNT and a few other I can not think of at this moment

Hi Robs! In our country, we refer to Math as a subject which already includes all the procedures and operations under the subject. We never use it with an "s" at the and since we are learning American English in our country, we also do not put the "u" in color, humor, and flavor.

Well what I can say is that is the way I was taught in school. I was never taught the proper english as you speak of. I guess somewhere along the way in history they changed it up to what we know here in America. I guess you consider your english to be either old english or proper english. To me seeing the word colour looks funny. So I write color as I was taught. And Math is the same to me. I guess it is all relative as to how we are taught and brought up in this life.

You know me Steve - Never really serious
It all goes back to the days just after we gave you Independence Steve.
Some bloke called Webster was not happy that the language being used by the new Country. He wanted the Americans to be different from their former masters. Add to that the high number of people that were illiterate - That isn't a slight against the US, most people around the world could read or write.
It was easy to get people to spell and read and write if some of the more stranger spellings were changed - The language was simplified.
I am proud to be English and I am proud of my heritage. It saddens me that around the World English is being replaced by American English.
As for MATH instead of MATHS - That is just wrong....
Maybe we should take back the colony to re educate you people

There have even been discussions on here about school coriculum changing to disenclude learning to write. I have noticed online that English is slashed all the time. It is very frustrating and degrading to the English written language. I doubt that anything will change. People are too self involved now days.

I was born and raised in America, and am even currently proudly serving in the US Army, but I never have and never will understand our spelling system. It really does not make any sense. We add letters to words that we don't even use, and drop letters from words that need them. There's all these different rules and exceptions to the rules, and nothing is ever spelled or pronounced or even used the way it should be. It is ridiculous to me.
