were not really thankful for?
I liked most of the clothes that I got as hand me downs. But every once in a while there was one I could live without.
A pepto-bismo pink long coat. How I hated that thing! But a dog attacked me while I was wearing it and ripped it to shreds. Had that been my skin, they'd still probably being doing plastic surgery on me.
My Mom wasn't thankful for the mini dress I got as a hand me down, but a lot of boys were.
Your turn.

I once got a pair of white and brown saddle oxfords. I suspect there are people who don't know what they were. (Look it up )
They were a half size too big, but they would have made my feet look like clown feet no matter what size. I had to wear them, though!

I substitute taught one day and said the Lone Ranger. One kid asked who that was. I was about to explain when the rest of the kids told that one. One of the nostaglic tv channels plays it and the kids whose parents only let them watch PBS and nostalia were going on and on about it. did my heart good!

I was little when those were in style. Was that back in the days of Roy Rogers and Dale Evans?

I'm the first niece of the family, so i can brag that my aunts love to give me their clothes. Lots of them fits me nicely, since i got the family's build ( which is, well, embarrassing to state here ).
But as it were hand-me-downs, some have very lame or old style, like from the 80's.
So i usually only wear anything that still seems relevant to present day. There's this particular jeans that i love, I've been wearing it since my teen days. Apparently my aunt also bought them when she was teenager. For those clothes that i didn't feel like wearing, we gave it to other family members.

Nice that they keep going for so long. Two generations of one pair of jeans. Amazing.
The 80s did have some not so great looking clothes. But some things are just timeless.

Our aunt handed us down our cousins' used clothes when we were younger. They were branded and they were still in good condition, too. My parents were thankful because they saved money for buying our clothes. When I had my son, my elder sister also handed me her sons' clothings. Clothes now are getting more and more expensive so I am also thankful. Now, her kids" clothing won't fit my son anymore. They have larger builts. Same with your problem. I guess I have to buy my son his own clothes.

Yes, it's hard to afford clothes now. Luckily, I am three miles from a second hand religious clothing shop and it only costs $2 a piece. So shirt, $2, pants, $2.
I was thankful for most of my clothing. I just really hated that coat for some reason. But that coat probably saved my life or at least my skin. Thanks and take care.

Oh, that coat saved your life. You should thank it. It's good that you wore that coat that day. Wow, you're so lucky. $2 for shirts and $2 for pants. You can really buy a lot of clothings with that price.

I feel lucky and blessed if I were given hand me down clothes. It will be a big saving in our budget. I mean, I will save by not buying another clthe because I was given. There is a clothe store here our country called ukay ukay. Ukay ukay may mean to dig. UkayUkay store sells second hand items and clothes and in order to find what your size or what suits you is you dig in the pile.
I am always thankful to what is given to me and my family. But ofcourse, I will use it if it fits and if I like it

Now that I do weaving, clothes that don't fit, I can still cut up and use. Or I can donate to what we call second hand or thrist stores.
I hope I didn't seem ungrateful. I was for most of the clothes. For some reason I really disliked that coat. I think because it made me look ill.
Thank you for responding. You sound like a very thoughtful and appreciative person.

Wow, you are weaving! I wish I could learn that even a little. I love handcrafts! Everything -- clothes or any items made. Handcrafts is like personalized thing just done for you.
You don't sound ungrateful. :) There are relly clothes tjat was given to us that we don't feel wearing and using.
Thanks for telling that you think I am thoughtful and appreciative. . Well, I really appreciate things that was given to me because I feel special. I feel special that I had been thought to be given. And, we should really appreciate many things in life and not take things for granted. Love and appreciate all things in life.

I don't get hand me downs but my kids do get some hand me downs or we go and buy used clothes that are being resold at the store. A lot of them I do like. I don't like buying clothes form the flea market because some times it's not that good and they don't last long or something. Some times they just aren't the kid of clothes I like on my kids because other people buy them clothes.

Swim wear? Wow

Yes but what does kids clothes now and daying being inappropriate have to do with used clothing stores?
I pick out all of my kids clothes and family know what I dress my kids in so there is no need to worry about what is or isn't appropriate for them at all. They are 1.5 years old and 13 weeks. Nothing in that age rage is inappropriate unless you look at the swim wear.

I don’t usually have hand me down clothes but rather I like giving away my old clothes to charity. It’s in a way a good feeling to help someone by sharing your old things most especially clothing. Hand-me downs are also a good way of saving money, and recycling by doing so, you are helping the environment.

I have done that a little, but usually I wear clothes out so no one else wants them. One in a while I gain or loose so much weight that I need to donate clothes that are still good.
You make a good point and I hope many more people donate clothing because of your repsonse so that the environment is better.
I've taken up weaving, so that the old scraps can have a new purpose.
Thanks and take care.

In all actuality, I've always been thankful for all of the hand-me-downs that I've been given. This was true when I was a little girl because of the fact that it meant that I had more clothes that I was able to choose from when it came to what I wanted to wear. And it is true now because it is money that I don't have to spend.
In those events that I am given something that I don't want to wear, I'm even thankful for those things because I know that the clothes that I don't want to wear can be passed on to individuals that are less fortunate than me.

Well that coat probably saved my life if not just only my skin.
I'm glad you're thankful for all of your clothing. Now if there is something I'm given that I can't wear, my husband can use it for rags or I can use it for weaving. As a teen, I was lucky that people didn't pick on me for my older clothing.
I didn't get very many clothes because of my build. They often barely fit and I often split them in school since I was growing. My cousins had a different build from me.
Glad that it worked out for you and you had lots of clothes to choose from.
Thanks for dropping by and I hope you have a wonderful day!

I guess the dog had the same view of the coat you did.
I didn't get a lot of hand-me downs. Not because we were rich or anything just that there was no one in the family of a similar age to me. Most of our neighbours did as we did and wore stuff until it fell apart! All my parents friends were older too and their kids were grown (I was a late accident).
The only ones I can remember is a friend of my aunt's gave me some of her daughters clothes. They were fairly affluent so the clothes were actually nice and included a lovely winter coat. I wore it once and the daughter saw me and said "Hey, I've got a coat like that" and was quite surprised to find out it was her coat.

I've learned from other posts that if I donate clothes and see them on someone to shut up. I wouldn't mean anything by it but people get offended.
Didn't think of it that way, but the dog comment made me laugh. That was a good one.
Sounds like some really beautiful clothes that you were given. Thanks for dropping by, nice to get responses from you again, take care.

Hand me down clothing usually don't bring the excitement that something new does. there is that time when something handed down means more to you. a dress that belonged to my grandmother did the trick for me, it was lavender and lace and I still cherish it even though my grandmother has now passed.

I got no problem with my sister's hand me down clothes coz we practically have the same taste. She is just a bit bigger in size than I am but then I could always wear something a bit loose. I am older than she is. She works in an office so she has lots of clothes. And when she feels buying new ones, she gives me the rest of her old stuff. SWEET!

I am thankful for hand-me-downs clothes. I came from a really poor family. Life just somehow got easier when I graduated from college and found a good work. But before, it was really not. My father had no stable job and my Mom would sell street food just so she could send me to school. My cousins and neighbors were of help by giving us anything that they can to help. That includes hand-me-down clothes.

I didn't mean to sound unappreciative. I had a different build than my cousins and often split my clothes in school which was very embarassing.
In college, they told me I couldn't wear hand-me-downs to be a teacher. So I had to ask my parents for money to buy clothes and that bothered me a lot.
That pepto-bismo pink coat always made me look ill and people always asked me if I was OK. But I was thankful I had it when I was attacked by that dog. The dog could have killed me. You should have seen what he did to that coat.
Thanks for dropping by.
I'm glad that you had help and things got better for you after college. Here, they told me I wouldn't have been hired with hand-me-down clothes. Which I think would be unfair.

I always have a hand-me-down clothes and or shoes until now. Sometimes, I feel sad and ask on myself, why I always have a hand-me-down things? In the other side of myself said, that is okay at least I saved a lot of money. So instead of buying clothes for me, I can buy new clothes for my kids.

Oh yeah, my sister gave me her white blouse she doesn't like it because it's too sexy and showing her armpits. I like wearing it because it is easy to wash and it is white easy to match to pants, and skirts of any color and style. I am thankful for that because where ever I go I bring that with me. I can make it as casual blouse with my blue jeans or formal with my black pants or white pants and put some blazers with it. Thank you my sister for the white, versatile blouse.

Thanks for sharing this discussion. In my case, i get a lot of hand-me-downs. And in some cases i buy them. And i'm more comfortable using these one's than brand new clothes. I just don't know why. I also have this shirt that I can't think of not using it. Even if this shirt is so used already. I even use this to go to malls.

Welcome to Mylot, you have a 40 after your name, so you're new here.
Some clothes, like jeans are stiff and can use some "breaking in" time, so I understand what you mean.
Thanks for dropping by. Nice job response.

My younger cousin was very tall and her mom sewed beautifully so I had a huge wardrobe for free. I also was nine years younger than my older sister. I remember one dress I really liked, that was probably too mature for me, and she and mom tried hard to make me like this other dress that in my mind was just too bland.

I grew up with a sister that was 9 1/2 years older than me, so I didn't really get any hand me downs from her. I did however have cousins who were only a few years older. I got a lot of clothes from them. I was not exactly fashion conscious back then, so I just wore whatever they gave me pretty much. I remember one day at school though one of my friends commented on an outfit my mother had just gotten me. She asked me if it was new and I informed her that my mother had just bought it the day before. She replied with, "I can tell it is new. It doesn't have any stains on it." I was so embarrassed. She was not trying to be mean. Just honest I guess, but it made me start to pay attention to those hand me downs after that.

That was an interesting lesson. We went thru lots of clothing if it was light colored because we had orange iron water. So I pretty much had to wear dark clothing or only wear a light outfit once or wash all the light outfits by hand.
Thank you for responding and have a wonderful day.

I've had more hideous hand me downs in the last few years than I ever received as a child. We live in an area where offering someone second hand clothes can be taken as a bit of an insult (yes, ridiculous I know). A couple of years ago I accepted an offer of some clothes for one of the kids, and word obviously got out that I wouldn't be offended and the floodgates opened. Now I even get bags of clothes sent to me house on the school bus and no idea where they've come from.
Don't get me wrong, it's kind and I'm very grateful. I'm also almost completely clothed for nothing and have enough clothes to last me for the rest of my life. But the clothes bags often contain things which are blatantly unsuitable for my family. I mean, what's the point of sending me a little girl's nightdress when I haven't got a little girl?
I end up with bags and bags of things which I think need to redistribute myself.

Yes, I have that too some times. Clothes I have to find homes for.
But when I got cancer and new I was going to get very swollen from chemo, I received lots of great clothes for which I'm grateful, but like you, what am I to do with little boy's trunks, I have no little boys?

I was a child in the 70's and 80's - hand me downs from relatives were common and most people wore some form of second hand clothing.
I think we have lost a little of what is important in the World with todays snobby view of Hand-Me-Downs.... The Original recycling

In college, I was told to buy new clothing or I couldn't teach. They wouldn't let me even wear hand-me-downs to student teach. You're already spending lots of money on college, then they want more from you.
I had a different build and different coloring from my relatives. Their clothes made me look ill or split quite often which was embarassing.
I did appreciatte some clothing, including that pepto bismo coat after if probably saved my life.
Thanks and take care.
