My 9 year old daughter has ADHD (Attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder) and ODD (Oppositional defiant disorder) She has been having trouble falling asleep at night and a friend recommended I try Melatonin. My question to everyone is Do you have experience using this method with your child, is it safe and does it work?

Thanks to provide the full form because I need it. I read many discussions here about ADHD but not know the symtoms of this. I dont know how we can know we are suffering from this disease.

There are a lot of different behavioral issues and learning curves associated with ADHD. I myself suffer from ADHD as well as my daughter and it has been a bumpy road for both of us but we have grown together from it. I know a lot about ADHD but there is always something new to learn!!

hi Cindance! Usually, melatonin is safe in low doses for short-term and long-term use. But be sure to talk with your doctor before you administer this to your kid because this might harm her. Just do it as a precaution. Although, you can buy it without prescription from the DR. It has side effects too, Cindance. Since melatonin will induce sleeping patterns, this might trigger excessive sleepiness.

Thank you for your reply, I wouldn't want to put her on it long term just on nights that she is having trouble falling asleep! She is a very strong minded and high strung girl and has a terribly hard time falling asleep. I hate seeing her like that and if this can help her that would be amazing. That is why I am asking for other people's experiences. Have you used Melatonin before?

Thanks a ton for sharing this discussion. Well i feel extremely bad for your daughter and i hope her illness goes away very soon. I would like to advise u that do not ever take medicines on anyone's recommendation. Consult a doctor first and listen carefully to what he says. They can help u get the best solution. Taking medicines without a doctor;s recommendation might prove risky for your daughter. What say?

My daughters illness is genetic and it will stay with her the rest of her life, as will mine. My doctor recommended Melatonin as well as a friend so I thought I would see if other people have had any experience with it and maybe share their experiences with me :)
