Here a normal umbrella costs about RMB25 and my umbrella was about RMB35. That's because it is bigger and therefore I can send my son to school in the rainy days.
A few days ago when I sent my son to school and it was raining. Besides, there was heavy rain and therefore this umbrella broke some bones. Then I let a man who repairs the shoes, bags etc. repaired my umbrella and he charged me RMB8.
My colleague think I am stupid because it is not that much to buy new umbrella. Whereas I think it is worthy. At least this umbrella can work like the new one. This charge is acceptable and reasonable. And this umbrella is not a waste and my behavior is good for the environment.
What do you think?

I think you are right.Apart from the reasons you mentioned, your behavior sowed the seeds of virtue in your son.I mean you actually set an example to your son and let him learn to save from childhood.

hi chang and youless I am in the US and I grew up during the 1930s and the great depressions. My mom gave us this motto, use it up, wear it out, make it do , or do without. I never did forget that and we did repair a lot of things when I w as growing up. SoI learned to be thrifty and it served me well during hard times. 0

I agree with you. 'Spending RMB8 rather than RMB25 or -35' is stupid? I hope you don't let that friend handle your money!
I couldn't find RMB on the Yahoo! Currency-Converter (which I found through a "Search the Web"-search), so this may not exactly make sense---Most umbrellas at the local store are just a couple of USD, and the wind around here breaks them quickly. And there's no 'cobblers' (people who repair shoes) in my neighborhood, so it's more efficient for me just to buy a new (cheap) umbrella.

so what you spent was not really out of line for repairing a big umbrella as I know here in the U"S the big ones are more costly than the smaller ones.

I have never got an umbrella repaired and I have never in all honesty heard of anyone who actually got their umbrella repaired. They are bought so cheaply that they are easily replaced and it would probably end up costing more to repair an umbrella than it would to replace it. I tend to end up losing my umbrellas, I leave them at the gym or on the public transport so I get through a lot of umbrellas. It is typical that when I take an umbrella out it doesn't rain, but when I forget to take an umbrella it will rain!

Hi youless, it's worthy to get a good quality umbrella repaired if it still could serve its purpose well after repairing. Moreover if it's an expensive one. Yeah, I always feel happy to see people like you to take care of our environment I just wonder why a good and expensive umbrella would break that easy. Oh yeah, may be the downpour is too heavy. Sometimes prices umbrella may be depend on their sizes, therefore it costs that much I suppose.
Before going on my fortnight oversea vacation I had bought a RMB16 fold-able umbrella for the convenience to carry along in my slim bag. I didn't choose the RMB28 one as it's too expensive although it's the same size as the former. I just thought of to abandon it if it didn't work anymore and bought another brand new one to replace it
Have a nice day and happy posting

I bought the cheaper one for I rarely use fold-able umbrella. It's small in size as well as lighter. Just for the convenient to carry it in the bag while going for sightseeing At home I like the good quality and durable big umbrella that I can share with my hubby or son during rainy day

thats it as I feel its good to repair a very good object rather than throw it away and buy one that is really poorly made.

In my place many places give free umbrella for their products promotion or free for every purchase. Those umbrella are big and good quality. Hence there is little change of buying a new umbrella. There are no place to fix umbrella here that i know off.Hence people here don fix umbrella they just throw it away or use a little faulty umbrella.

I think your colleagues are mistaken. By having it repaired you did three wise things. First, you saved yourself the cost of a new umbrella, second, you kept a repairable item out of the trash and third, you gave an honest workman something to do to earn some money. I think that was a wise investment all the way around.

You are environmentally friendly. It is a good idea to have this umbrealla fixed. When something is wrong with the umbrellas we use, like the thread is loose, I have my wife do the fixing job. She does a good job, but if it is a serious problem like the one you mentioned here, we may get it repaired by an umbrella repairman. Keep it up, youless.

I wish that more people would embrace that philosophy of having things repaired rather than simply rushing to replace things--often when they are barely even worn.
I don't believe there is anyone around here who repairs umbrellas. I wish there were, since my boyfriend is a heavy user of umbrellas. While I am likely to go skipping through a drizzle, he breaks out an umbrella at the first raindrop.

here in the Philippines, there are already very cheap umbrellas that losing them or breaking them is not one's worry because he or she can buy another cheap one that easy.
i think it's not really worth it if the umbrella is not that expensive but if it had cost you a lot, then it is worth to be repaired.

Hi youless!
In our country, we try our best to make the most of anything that we have. Personally, I would try to repair my umbrella if I could do it personally especially if the damage is just minor. I would only bring it to the repairman if I cannot anymore repair it. But it would also depend on the damage. I would also recycle the umbrella into something useful if there is really no way of repairing it.
On your part, I think it just a good decision to have you umbrella be repaired. It is not only that you would help save the environment and money but you could also help others do their living.
Have a nice day!

If the umbrella is still looking new , clean then it is okay for it to be repaired but if it looks so old already then no matter how you wash still dirty looking then it is wise enough not to have it repaired. Be practical and wise.

I support, you can let the big one work fine and send your son to school. the big one is more convenience for you and your son. Additional, how you can make sure the RMB25 one work long time than the old one?? hehehehe

hi there youless,
i guess what you have done is fine. after all, you are the one who will use the repaired umbrella so it is up to you. though the amount really speaks, but what matters is how that thins is important to you. remember if that umbrella isn't repaired, i guess it will just be placed in a corner where nobody will use it. and since you got a new one, for sure, you will use it and not to bother hold the old one.

I think the repair was not very expensive than buying a new one. When my umbrella gets broken ,I try to fix it on my own but if the damage is unrepairable that's the time I buy a new one.Nowadays I try to be as frugal as I can.

Not stupid at all, what's wrong with fixing things instead of tossing them out? You can save money by not buying new replacements and not add to earth waste. Nowadays though many of us have no patience with repairs, instead opting to buy new at the smallest sign of defects.

if the repaired fee is acceptable and reasonable, it is worth reparing your umbrella. You can keep using your unbrella as new since it is on good condition. Your behavior is quite good. Good for environment, good for society.

Yes, very much. The importance of an umbrella can only be felt during the monsoon. When it rains heavily we require an umbrella to keep us unwet. so it is really worthy to repair an umbrella which protects us from the scorching heat of the sun and heavy rain. it acts as a shield.
