i really amazed when people said, they used their laptop more than 4 years.
most my friends are like that, one of the already used it for 6 years,
but me, i'm just a destroyer. haha
i'm not sure why, in 4 years study, i already used 3 laptop.
for the first year, i used toshiba, after a year the screen just keep blinking all the time, cost to repair as much as a new one.
then i take my sister's laptop, also after a year, the mother board is broke.
now, i'm using the 3rd.
hope it will last until i finish my study, maybe in 5 years more

You may want to consult Consumer Reports to see which laptops are the best before you make your next laptop purchase. I have an Acer, which I have had zero problems with so far. The one previous was a Compaq that had every issue with it under the sun. WIndows XP would always crash. I lost so much data on that laptop due to the system just crashing. I would have to reformat and reinstall everything. It was aweful. Then the motherboard crashed along with hard drive. Then, about 6 - 12 months later it broke again.
When I finally had money to purchase a new laptop, I refused to buy an HP because they bought out Compaq. I did not want to have similar computer issues ever again. So, I bought the Acer. It was an unknown brand, but it was one of the cheaper laptops and about the only option because I did not want an HP computer. I have to say I have been surprisingly impressed by the quality of the Acer brand.

i'm not so sure about with HP. not all my friend used it.
for acer , yes many of them satisfied with it.
but still have few of them complaint about it.
so, i dont take that as the major problem. maybe they also have problem with the ways they care their laptop too.

I think it really depends upon the laptop that you purchase. The first laptop that I bought was always crashing. I had so many problems with it. The motherboard burned out on it. Luckily, it was still under warranty. I did have to send it back to the factory for them to fix it. Then again, I was able to get them to fix the keyboard on the laptop that Tigger (the kitty cat) broke with his own little furry paws and kitty claws. I am not joking Tigger is a pro at using his claws to remove keys from laptops. That is how he got his permanent ban from technology. If you think you have a string of breaking computer, I do not think it can equate to Tigger's mischeavous streak of breaking computers. He has broken one laptop keyboard, 4 wireless keyboards, and I suspicion that he may have had something to do with the last PC desktop that I owned crashing. I came home from work to the sound of it beaping like crazy. There was nothing wrong with it when I left for work. That is why Tigger is no longer allowed to play with the laptop. I just always make sure that I close it when I leave it unattended. That has solved that issue. He will occassionally lay or sit on top of the closed laptop. That is all that he is allowed to do with the laptop.
The current laptop that I have is an Acer. I have to say that I have been really happy with it. I have had it for about 3 years now. It has worked great with no issues. The only thing is that it desperately needs a brand new battery. The battery that came with the laptop will no longer hold a charge. The only con about the laptop is that I would like the speakers on it to be a little better quality. Sometimes if you are watching a movie or something on the computer it is not loud enough. I do have speakers for it that I can plug in so that solves that issue. It is a lot better now that I bought speakers that just plug into the USB port rather than having the old fashion kind that need to be plugged into an electrical outlet.

Tigger would not scratch the keyboard no he is more of a smarty kitty. He would sit next to the laptop and take his claw insert the claw in between the keys then pick up the edge of the key until he could flick it off with his claw. He always would leave the keys near the computer. Truthfully, I think he was sabotaging the computer. It was during the time that I was working on my master's degree when I had to spend tons of hours studying on the computer. I do not think that he liked that too much. Oddly the behavior seemed to stop once I graduated.
That is so cute that you cat put his head on the keyboard. Now days, Tigger likes to come lay next to me on the couch while I am using the laptop. He likes to put his tail right across the track pad area of the mouse or the keyboard. Sometimes, it is like I am trying to type and his tail gets in the way. He likes to use his tail to stroke my hand. Actually one time he tried doing this while I was eating dinner, and Tigger got lasagna on his tail. It was pretty funny especially when I had to go get a napkin to clean off his tail seeing that I did not want him getting sauce on the couch.

Destroyer of machines we have a terminator amongst us lol jokes apart no one can guarantee that how much long an electronic gadget would last no matter how carefully you handle it.

I think too that these days they are making computers more like they are only supposed to last for a couple of years. They used to make it so they would last longer, but then it was like they were outdated 6 months after you purchased it. Now, it seems like with the economy in shambles we are all trying to make things last longer rather than replacing them as soon as the next versions of computers come out.
Does your new PC have Windows 7 or WIndows 8 in it? I have heard so bad things about Windows 8, so hopefully it has Windows 7 for the operating system because that is a terrific operating system. I have been really happy with it.

You just have plenty of money friend that is why ! Haha ! Actually it is how you uses it , maybe it is overused . Laptop have low power than than our PC's , they can work that hard unlike PC where in it can double time working ,like it can work 24/7 lol that is the way i am using my PC. It rest when i will rest also. Next time also consider the brand in buying a laptop. Expensive one are more lasting than the cheaper one but still it depends on how you uses it!

Yes, I think the brand has a lot to do with it. I will not say that the more expensive brands are necessarily better than the cheaper ones. My first laptop was a Compaq. It er did not last and I had all types of issues with it. My current laptop is an Acer. It was on,e of the cheaper options for a laptop. The choices were between an Acer and HP. Since HP bought out Compaq I did not want an HP. I did not want to have similar problems like the issues that I had with the first PC. I also knew that I did not want to get a laptop with Windows Vista because their had been so many issues with that operating system. I have been pleasantly surprised at the quality of the Acer brand.

Computers are made so people can benefit from it. It makes our work easier to do. We must take care of computers because if by accident we destroy it we will be the one to suffer the result. The files in our laptops are the most important so we should save some back-up copies to be safe even we destroy the computer. Computers are very useful to everyone.

The flash drives or I think they are being called thumb drives now work great for backing up files. They are generally pretty cheap and they can hold a lot of storage space.

I have had my computer for 2 years now. Actually, my son used it for the first year. He needed it for high school and now that he has graduated, grown and flown, now I am using my own lap top. It is still in good condition. I am realizing that a lap top is becoming cumbersome and bulky. And yet, a year ago, I was so thrilled to go from my PC to a lap top. Such is the changing technology world we live in.

I wish that I could take my laptop anywhere. It is badly in need of a new battery. The current one no longer holds a charge. Seeing that it almost three years old, I am not that surprised.

Computers do develop problems, with laptops being more prone to issues that the sturdy desktop. Nevertheless, a laptop should have a decent life span providing it is looked after properly. You can be unfortunate and components will cease to work properly, but that should not apply to several laptops in succession.
The problems that you describe sound like the type of problems caused by rough treatment, so I suspect that you have a habit of dropping them or something similar.

Why? Maybe you are not taking good care of it since it was not your money which was bought for it? Am I right? Because if it came from your sleepless nights and that you took perspiration in order to have a laptop, then, you will surely take good care of it and that never try to destroy it.

It could have been that the past two laptops where used. Especially if your mom and sister had used it for awhile before giving it to you.

I've had both my desktop computer and my laptop for many years now. I know that we got my laptop when I was pregnant with my son (and he is six years old now). It might not be the fastest laptop that you can get, but it does what I need it to do and that is just fine with me.
When it comes to my desktop, I believe that I've had the same one for the past eight years.
The thing for me is that my husband enjoys working on computers, so when there is something that is going wrong with it, he is typically able to get it back in working order.

That is terrific! I hope that my current laptop lasts a really long time. It is nice that your hubby can help you fix the computer. I can troubleshoot with the help of the internet or tech support, but that is about it. I am getting better with my knowledge of computers but I am not supper computer savvy. Of late when I have an issue, I take to getting the advice of friends here on myLot of how to resolve the issue.

Maybe you should try to know why your laptops broke down easily. From there you will know how to take care of your laptop, so it will last for how many years.
My daughter's laptop has been with her for how many years. She's so careful with her computer, that sometimes she would let me borrow it only for an hour. She said i might scratch it.

Aha, so maybe your little brother tinkers with your computer when you're not around, that's why it got damaged.

Ungu, I agree with you. You may want to consider an extended warranty plan. A lot of time they do not cost that much extra money. Then, if something breaks it would be covered by the extended warranty. I did this with my first laptop. It worked out well because when the motherboard crashed it was like a month before the 2 year extended warranty expired, so it got repaired for free.

Hi ungu!
I have my laptop for almost two years already. I know I am very careful with my things. I really bought a bag to be used by the laptop alone and I don't land it to anybody. But I let my daughter use it during weekends or holidays with a reminder that she should take good care of it.
I have also an office mate who already have 3 laptops from the start that she started with her work in our office. I observe her, she just put it on top of anything and most often, it would fall and she also let her smaller cousin use it.
I hope you that your new laptop will already last longer. Take good care of it.

I agree that it is really best to not let young children use your computer. A lot of times things that they will do will cause problems with the computer.
Yes, I have taken good care of my laptop. Even when I was student teaching 7th & 8th grade I would not let students use my laptop without supervision. The only one that I let carry it one day when I needed someone to set it on the desk for me because I was busy needing to direct other students I handed the laptop to the one 8th grade student that was super carefully and took good care of things. I knew I could trust the student to be very careful I had let him borrow materials before and he always treated them with the extreme care.

Wow! That does seem to me like a lot of computers to go through in that time. But I am hard on keyboards, because I come from a long ago time when we learned to type on manual typewriters (computers without soft touch keys, screens, internet or electricity). I have improved over time, but still have work left to do on my hard keystrokes, so I keep extra keyboards, mice and hubs around. I'm also evolving into better tuneup and antivirus software, and portable storage and backup techniques, so this helps extend the life of my computers, too. Maybe we both need to go into computer sales, to save money on our computer consumption habits. Best wishes! :-)

Yes, I agree that it always good to have a wireless keyboard around. I tend to use mine a lot if I need to do a lot of data entry with numbers. I am faster typing in numbers with the 10 key. I think it can also be a little bit easier on your wrists but then again I love to use my laptop sitting on the couch so I tend to just type on the laptop keyboard most of the time.
Then again, I do not really have a good desk work space. I live in a 1 bedroom apartment, and I am so wanting an extra room for a home office. Well maybe the next apartment will be a 2 bedroom. I would love to have a home office with a big desk and supper cozy office chair. Considering my finances, I am dreaming, but it always good to have a wish list.

My brother using his laptop more than 3 years just some of keyboard broken. I not think you are destroyer but maybe you not take of your laptop. If you using laptop do not open it 24 hours you must make it take a rest hehe. Do not spend to much time playing video game in laptop it makes your laptop hot. Do not turn off your laptop immediately. I not expert in computer so i just can suggest this.

unink gu, I that she is referring to the fact that it is best to shut it down rather than to turn it off at the power source. I generally just close my laptop when I am done with it rather than shutting it down. I like my current laptop this cause it just shut off and saves my work session. Then, I can just power it back on and restore my session.
The issue with laptops is that if you leave them on 24 / 7 that it causes the motherboard to pretty much melt and break. I had this issue with my first laptop. I tended to not turn it off because the Compaq laptop was nearly impossible to turn on.
I do not play video games on my laptop. I just use the internet and MS Office components. I was unaware that video games put such a strain on laptops.

Hi,
More reason I prefer the desktop PC. Offers more computing power per dollar in comparison to laptops. Desktops can also run 24/7 under the full fury of Far Cry or Halo in high resolution video and sound effects. Last for ten years in average too.

With all these new SmartPhones I feel like I have a dinosaur for a cell phone it is flip phone you know those old types. Well, I am considering getting a Smart Phone next year. I cannot stand having to sit and wait for appointments and miss the fact that I cannot be productive because most of the things that I need to do all require a computer. We live in such a modern society these days.
As I am slowly starting to use Microsoft Outlook for my command center for all the tasks and appointments that I need to do each day I really want a phone where I can sync my Outlook to my cell phone.

I'm not gonna tell you how many times I replaced my laptop I'm worse than you, my first laptop was working fine I used it for 3 years since I was at previous school, although my friend told me that my laptop brand is not famous, the brand is bad, etc but I managed it very well until one day I clean my bedroom, I rearrange the furniture because I got new shelf. I put my bag with my laptop on top of the shelf, and then it felt down from the shelf and broken. I miss my 1st laptop.
Then I got another laptop, it was my brother's laptop before he get a desktop. After few weeks it didn't work well so I take another laptop, it happened several times. So until now I use what is available in my father's office, sometimes using netbook sometimes laptop. At least if something happen to the laptop I can make excuses that the laptops is already used by many people
