Here is a question that has puzzled people for years... Well me and my friends.
sometimes over a few beers in the past.
So - Flies?
Are they called flies because they fly or is the verb flying named after the fly?
Now before you say that obviously the fly is called a fly because it flies, think about this -
Why is a bird not called a fly?
And are Oranges, orange?

i think it is difficult to search the root of a word when and how and why a thing called by that name. i dont have any abilities in this kind of matter cos i dont learn English literacy but i can compare it with my own language. if there is one ask me why this thing called 'meja' - table in English or something else, i just answer cos our ancient taught us to call this 'meja' so just follow it. lol. i think English is also almost the same. a language is influenced by the journey of the nation.like English, is influenced by french, spanish and maybe latin cos those three countries have close relation in a journey of building US. my national language is influenced by Melayu so we have similar vocabularies with Malaysia. it is also influenced by Arabic and Javanese. but i find sometimes English word is derived from the way a thing is like coconut milk. why we call the liquid we get from grated coconut with coconut milk cos the liquid derives from coconut and it is as white as milk..!! lol. i think it similar with fly and orange. when ancient Englushmen saw an orange but they didnt know what fruit it was, they called it orange cos the color is orange. but how they got orange as color..?? oohhh..the question is as difficult as which came first egg or chicken? lol.
im sorry i think i share nothing..lol..lol..

I believe they named flies as flies because they fly around your food and typically we think flies are annoying flying over our food. That is why the name flies was given to flies instead of other flying insects. For your information, flies in Chinese has negative connotative meanings. People sometimes describe those annoying people who always come out and make troubles when they are not welcomed as flies. This somehow supported my thought.

From what I search in the internet, the orange colour is actually named
after the fruit - orange. Flies actually named from the action that they
fly and an additional element scientifically to check whether they have
the criteria to fall under the category flies based on number of pairs of
wings. Words searching to understand its meanings and roots is really
interesting! Thanks for this great topic.

I have often questioned why things are called what they are called for years. I think flies means plural. If I had to guess or assume. Oranges, well, I think they are orange because they tell us the color is orange. It is just a ball shaped fruit.

I am stuck by this question . So many people can't answer it,much less me .It seems to be a question referring to English etymology. It is said that Fly derives from old English word "fleoge " .
