Reading habits of your child

Some children speak loudly, slowly or quietly while studying. Some have a habit of moving the fingers under the sentence while reading. When reading is done loudly then the energy is wasted and the child can not study for the long time.If a finger is moved under the sentence while reading brain concentration is diverted for moving the finger. Some children have a habit of reading while lying on the sofa or a bed. But it is a bad habit.Reading should be done always with a proper posture. What are the reading habits of your child.

Thanks a ton for sharing this discussion. Yes u are absolutely right, reading louder is simply a waste of time and energy. Even as a child i sometimes used to read loud but i never got any benefits or advantages from it. I find children reading the texts loudly very annoying and i wish that they realize that it is not by reading louder that they can understand the texts but if they read it with full mind and soul then they can understand the concepts in a much better way. What say?

agreed with u mavic, u cannot said it was annoyed, we need to give them time to learn. maybe it their own ways to learn like that. but sometime we still need to be careful i think, make sure even they read loudly they understand what they read, because sometime, they don't know what the meaning while they are reading the story

Subhojit, don't be annoyed, those are they learning styles.. they learn more if they hear themselves. They belong to Auditory Learner.. some by touching the words.

When I was going home, I saw my younger brother who is in elementary grade that he is using his hand to read and also saying it loud. I was fascinated watching him and I'd love to help him if he is encountering such unfamiliar words. He was boosting every time he finished to read some articles.

Your brother is a tactile learner kokomo he learns best, he uses his hand to understand each word. i wish there could be some kind of a meter understanding that we can actually see if the person is learning or not. YOu may want to read my response above or is it below, I can't remember LOL about different learning styles so you can help your brother to understand and learn better.

Hmmm, my son would read at his study table. He will read it quietly. However, I am the one that have the problem of lying on the sofa and read. I think I better change this bad habit. I must walk the talk. I like this topic of yours, I learn much from it. Thanks.

I think that's actually how a lot of kids learn to read in the beginning. Someone will point at the word, placing their finger or a piece of paper under the words, so the child is focuses specifically on that one word. I don't have any children yet, but I have seen kids learn to read this way!

When my children were in class -1 and learned simple sentences in school ,I used to ask them to read story books and newspaper headlines aloud , during summer vacations (this was done to keep them busy )children have so much energy which has to be properly managed to keep them away from mischief .This habbit of there,s has made them avid readers ,today my daughter is a free lance writer and my son is from one of the best institutes and I am proud of them .

I am glad that both of my kids love books . . . I feel fortunate they will read in the bathroom, in their beds, or even upside down. I know there are many kids out there who are disinterested in reading or have trouble with it (I have an adult friend who cannot help his children with homework because he cannot read very well). My oldest is 7 . . . she is apparently one of the top readers in her class. But, sometimes she will rush read . . . and if I "see" her read, sometimes she will guess at the bigger words instead of sounding them out correctly . . . and if the word is read incorrect, that could change the whole context of the sentence. My little one just turned 3, and he doesn't officially "read" on his own yet, but he loves to be read to. His bad habit is making piles of books on his bed and doing sommersaults on them - ha ha.

Hi I agree there should be proper posture and time to read. some read loud and i am one of them . If i read in mind and with eyes i loose my concentration and really cant get what i am reading. Sometimes i even write what ever i read ,i mean writing while reading. But some read in their mind or we can say with eyes like my brother ,i can never read like that ,i even feel sleepy if i read in mind.

My kids don't read like that and I never heard that they had to read with an upright posture and I have a minor in reading. I think getting kids to read is an issue itself rather than having to worry about the child's seating position. I often like to curl up with a good book on the sofa or in a chair. I home school my children and they read an hour everyday, first thing in the morning. If I had to read with an upright posture, I wouldn't be doing much reading myself.

Hi roshigo! Oftentimes, I would hear my daughter reading aloud inside her room. Then one time, I asked her why she needs to read aloud when in fact she can do it silently. She told me she understand it better if she can hear her voice. At the same times she is also practicing her speech so it would not be difficult for her to speak in front of the class. Have a nice day!

I don't have a child, but I can share my reading habits since I am fond of reading too. :) When I read, I read it quietly, without sound, or pointing fingers at the lines. I look like I am staring at it but actually I am reading it. I also read in bed, because I easily fall asleep when I read. Actually, it is like my secret so I can go to sleep early. I used to have this thing of staying so late at night and end up being useless the whole day. So I read books to make myself fall to sleep. :) I don't think the posture matters when reading books, especially when those are just novels. But if you don'y want too sleep and obliged to read a chapter assigned by your professor, then that's the time you really have to make your posture proper s you would not end up sleeping instead of studying.

WE have different ways to learn and so with the children. there are different learning styles that our system is adapting to the environment without really developing it intentionally or wanting it to develop the way a person wanted. Different learning styles: 1. Visual Learners: Children/Learners who used their eyes or vision to learn. They learn best when they see what the lesson is. Use of PowerPoint presentation, visual aids, videos are most helpful for them to absorb the lessons. Regarding the reading style of the child, these are children who can understood what they are reading when they read silently. 2. Auditory Learners: Children/Learners who used their ears to learn. They learn by hearing. Use of videos, lectures and story telling may be a good way of learning the lessons. They can understand a podium speaker in a convention. They need to hear the lessons. Regarding reading style of the child, these are children who read aloud. They need to hear themselves reading each word one by one. 3. Kinesthet/Tactile Learners: Children/Learners who used their sense of touch or taste to learn. They learn by actual doing the activity. They learn when demonstrated to them and they follow the procedure. Physical Learners. Regarding reading style of the child, these are children who read with the fingers under the word they are reading. It is a sense of touching word one by one. ***Personal Note: These are the reasons why teachers play a big role to help the children learning more. A teacher should not just be using one form of teaching style for example, Lecture... because it would not be catering Kinesthetic/tactile and visual learners. The role of a teacher is very vital. the teacher should be versatile in presenting the lessons. Most of the time it is advisable that teachers explore on the teaching strategies that will accommodate the three learning styles. For more information you can visit this site. http://homeworktips.about.com/od/homeworkhelp/a/learningstyle.htm what type of learner are you?

My kids are now grown up. But when my son was in school he liked reading his lessons loudly. He had a good memory and once he read something he would remember it well. But it was a disraction to my daughter who was a couple of years younger to him and also studying.

Hi, The situation in your house may be like the one in our house. I always read loud and my brother is just opposite. But he never complained anything like that in all these years.

I was lucky as my children were so interested in what was read to them when they were younger, or what they were reading themselves when they were older, but the book was what they were interested in, whether they were lying in a sofa or in bed. Topics were sometimes what I would considered difficult, but the interest they displayed was the same!

I read some expert article before that mentioned we should read silently. That is the best way to read and can absorb the information faster. It seems the faster we read, the more we can understand. To keep the information longer in our memory, it is good if we can read the book the second time. My son normally read silently and at times he will draw out the mind map based on the information that he understand.

Well, she does all of those you mentioned. She also reads, face down with her tummy pressed on the bed and the book lying on the bed facing up. This is her favorite position.

I don't have any children cause I am still a child myself but when I read I do different things depending on the subject matter of the book. If I am reading for fun then laying down is not a problem but if it is mandatory reading for school especially history reading while reading is just like listening to ocean sounds in complete darkness. I can't sit completely still while I read because I can't concentrate that way. So I think it just depends on the way the person's brain works and registers information if moving. laying down or etc. are bad habits for them.

I have a child who reads by repeating what she learned in school. She calls out the words the same way her teacher would, and even in the same rhythm like she was practicing for teaching.
