I can only afford a point and shoot camera but am interested in photography. Is it possible to learn how to take good photos with a simple camera. I am thinking it is still possible to learn about composition with a basic digital camera. What are your opinions in photography for beginners?

Photography is not limited with the gears that you have. You can even learn photography just with the use of a basic point and shoot. All you need to learn is the right framing, since most cameras nowadays have a lot of options there are manual modes or program modes that you can play with to adjust the amount of exposure you want your subject to be shot with.
Also, lighting is important in photography. Regardless of the expensive gears, a true crisp photograph wouldn't be successful if you didn't aim it on the right lighting.
You can read some articles about basic photography online and tips and tricks on point-and-shoot photography. There are also tutorial videos on basic point and shoot framing and lighting on youtube and there is a community on flickr, a group called iPhonography (I posted a discussion about iPhonography you can view my posted discussions for some info about that subject) which is a type photography that uses mobile camera devices such as iPhone as their camera tool.

I absolutely agree with you.. Photography is not just about the gears, it about how you can maximalize the camera and gears that you have and keep learning and improve with it.. :)

You are very much welcome! Photography is not just about the bulky single lens reflex cameras but how you create art and good quality capture of your photographs.
I learn this back then in college in my photojournalism and film production major.
Have a great day!

Thanks so much for your reply. With digital cameras improving so much, I do think that people can take great shots with an inexpensive camera. Perhaps not professional quality but still good photos. My husband's smart phone's camera's photos turn out really well. I will check out your discussion about iPhonography. Thanks again.

Thanks a ton for sharing this discussion. Well i am glad to know that u love photography and i would like to say that it is too difficult to try photography with normal camera. But yes u can do photography with a digital camera.
Well i would like u to suggest to have patience and continue with your skills. Try to do some savings from now onwards so that u can get a point and shoot camera in the near future and help your talent go to a next level.
What say?

I do know that I can learn a lot about composition and photography creativity with a point and shoot digital camera. So, I am learning as much as I can, even with the limitations of a point and shoot camera. I think it is important to learn composition, which I can learn on an inexpensive point and shoot camera.

A typical or basic digital camera is usually one with a 50mm lens. With this camera, the depth of field is pretty much the same with the background in sharp focus. This means that this type of camera is always ready to snap at anything at a moment's notice.
I suppose the ideal shots for this camera are those spur-of-the-moment poses or candid facial expressions when people interact with other people. Of course, the subject should be within a few feet away.

I think it is possible to learn, I have a Cybershot camera. It`s supposeable a cheap camera (according to many friends who are photographers). I took a couple pictures of the brats for Christmas and everyone thought they were professional pictures, asking where I got them done, or what type of camera I used.

What I like about Canon digital cameras is the way the shots appear brighter. I'm not sure if this is because of a higher ISO capability, but my shots with Canon cameras tend to be more lively. Out of the box, a basic Canon camera will take really great photos without the need for more photo editing.
