Would you be ok with working by yourself?

The job at the pet store is famous of this, now that I have a key and code for the store they are constantly leaving me by myself. Now my other job at the worm farm I get left alone but they check up on me. But its out in the country (and how many people would go out to the bush to attack someone). The pet store is right in the middle of the town, the crime rate as increased drastically. People being attacked, and beaten for petty change. I told them I don't feel comfortable closing at night, it's pitch black out, and I can't see in the dark. So if someone is hiding somewhere I most likely wouldn't see them. The girl I work with texted me, and said she is working until 1230pm, then I am by myself. They simple wont let anyone change shifts, so they expects people to do two peoples job if something comes up.

I work by myself, until twelve sometimes. Sometimes I go in early before six, but it is not retail. It is in a low income apartment complex. I usually lock my car doors. I am not sure I would want to work retail by myself, but honestly, I would feel more at risk at the worm farm. People do go stalking people out in the country because they figure they are less likely to be seen.

That is true, but many are more noisy and willing to help in the country. Whereas in town people just keep walking by.

that would be sort of scary i think. i have worked by myself in the office during the day but not at night, of course, where i work is in a business park so there wouldn't be anyone around much anyways, but still. it is too bad that the company doesn't care more about your safety.

I use to work midnights out in the country at a coffee shop. I use to have to stay by myself as well, it was so ridiculous. It's more your fears playing off you, and when the video cameras don't actually work (which I was told the other day which made it worse).

I've worked by myself in many different jobs. I rather like it: no one to interfere with my routine or keep amused by listening to their inane talk.

I do enjoy working by myself, at the worm farm I am by myself noone to bug me. Whereas at the pet store it gets overwhelming when a number of people come in and start following you around asking questions while you have a large line up. It's more if someone robs you, or attacks you when you leave which has been on the rise around here.

hi Ricki I do not blame you for being worried as here in the Us in California there have been many cases of people wor king alone late at night in Convenience store being robbed and some have been shot too. AT least at the worm farm they do check on you. B ut the pet store is in the city so y es you are put in more danger working alone late at night alone.I do not r eally know what to s uggest but it wou ld be good in places like that to hire a security guard to check the premiese.

Yes, the pet store is in town, and built up area with higher crime. I wasn't worried until they told me the video cameras don't record.

I would enjoy working by myself , I like the freedom . I understand what you are saying about the late night shift , I would be afraid to do that , I would not want to lock up by myself at night when someone can be watching me and I cant see them .

I don't mind working by myself, but it's more locking up and leaving. Anything could happen, and if noone is around. Also, I was told the video cameras don't record which made it worse.

Hi ricki! I would also be afraid given the same situation. Although I like to work alone as I can concentrate more if I am on my own but this is a different situation. You should request somebody to be with you or you request to change your shift on a day time. Only if possible. Take care!

I worked by myself in many jobs but I never like it as far as "safety" is concerned. I did like the fact I was on my own, and I could get quite a bit done as I was a display merchandiser and no one bothered me. I did not like it though, as you mentioned, when there are many people in the store and they all want your attention. Number one, it's easy for someone to steal under those conditions. Number two, you cannot stay at the cash register if someone has a question about something further on down an aisle away from the cash register...not good. Plus, being alone is not good under any conditions, whether it's during the day or not..not anymore. I would NEVER work alone at night..ever. So, I guess if I had a choice, I would rather have someone with me for sure in today's world. This is what happens now when you're a keyholder. Before, you usually had someone else with you. Today, it's all about the company and how much money can they save on just having one person work. It doesn't matter how much danger is involved.

You hit it right on the nail, I was also told that the camera's don't record (so if your not sitting in the office watching them it's useless). Which is why I tried talking my way out of being a keyholder, I didn't want to be by myself at night, people can watch the store, and see a pattern.

Working by yourself in the daytime is one thing, but at night when it is dark out and you can't see everything as well as in the daytime I don't know that I would be comfortable with that. I worked late at night at a gas station by myself, but we were open 24/7 and someone always came in to relieve me. I didn't have to lock up and leave in the dark.

I work in an office so I'm not by myself there's other people in there with me. But everyone pretty much leaves you alone and you can do your job by yourself and ask for help when needed. I like the atmosphere I work in because I work in the hospital so I know I am safe there and don't have to worry about any crime. Don't they have security guards where you work that someone can watch over you while your out there by yourself or for your walk back in the dark? That's definitely not a safe environment to work in.

No, and I was told thaat the video cameras don't record which is what made me start worrying. We do have a panic button under the cash, and if someone sets the alarm off, or you have 30 seconds to lock the door before it goes off, but what if you lock the door and walk away and someone attacks you.

Depending on the job that I had and how late that it would be when I was able to leave work, I wouldn't mind working by myself at all. The reason that I wouldn't mind to work by myself is because of the fact that I prefer to be a solitary person. It works better for me when I don't have someone breathing down my back all the time. When I was working through a temporary service years ago, I had an assignment as a secretary at a lawyer's office. Well, some of the time the attorney was there, but the rest of the time I was there alone answering the phones and taking messages. I absolutely loved it and I wish it would have become a full time job.

If it is in the evening, I don't think I'd do it. Don't they have a security guard in that store? Why do they open 24/7 when I think people don't go out in the middle of the night to buy pets. Well, maybe buy pet food but that is not safe for anyone to be right there in the middle of the night.

They arn't open 24/ 7 but they are open late enough, and a lot of people do shop later as they work. They couldn't afford a security guard, most places can't.

I wouldn't mind if I am working with myself because it’s more of a quiet environment. however, if the workload would be tough and I don’t have much knowledge about it. Then that’s the time I would seek help from others.

i would be okay to be working by myself so long as i know i would not be putting myself in danger, like the shift you are required to takke and if it would require you to be on guard all the time, i guess it won't be worth the over time. but if it is a regular office work, i would not mind if i would take a different shift from others or be assigned on my own... =)

It depends on the job. I've managed offices by myself before, which I consider fun since I like directing myself in my work and tend to do a better job that way. However, working by yourself in retail is ridiculous and dangerous. I obtained a job back in September with the sole purpose of making extra payments toward my husband's student loans with the money I made, since my business was already paying bills. After I was fully trained, they wanted to leave me by myself from open to close. The best part? It was a loan and check cashing business. So, there I was, from open to close, with a safe in the store full of money and customers whom were all desperate for money. I made my manager aware that my husband would be coming to work with me, since there were no people whom could come from other stores to be with me. I also asked my manager what the rules were on bringing weapons to work in the case I needed to defend myself; her answer was that there were no weapons allowed. Long story short, I no longer work there. I was making good extra payments toward those loans, but it wasn't worth me risking my life, despite how dramatic that may sound. Businesses need to consider their employee's comfort levels. If they don't, those employees need to look for a business that does. I don't know what your financial situation is, but if you could, start looking for something else that is better staffed and safer. You deserve better than to be constantly worried while you're trying to work.

Hi friend, it is not a good thing to force you to do the job if you are not comfortable with it, as you mentioned that you told them that you are not comfortable with this new change, hope they will reconsider it. It is really hard to work in the night time if there is no proper security

Noooo....ok, honestly i am fine working by myself. But my gender woudn't allow me to completly relax in a surrounding with no guarantee. I always pre-empt myself with what ifs! And although you can take precaution yourself its not a guarantee. If the place I work has a crime as high as the building itself, nah I just have to look elsewhere to work. and also if my employer is inonsiderate enough then i'll just resign and find work someplace.

I do advise you to ask your boss or manager for another man together with, and you give a talk with boss or manager to let them know what if the danger apears ,two guys would be better to under controll...because nobody can make sure he is capable cope with that bad situation like rob or attack...
