There are people who just can't accept defeat and throws their negative reactions to those who are successful in their life, career, etc. Instead of making them as an example, these people exert all their effort on throwing dirt to the successful ones to bring them down. just think about crabs inside a pail, they crabs below would pull down those who are getting ahead of them. that's what the live means.

In my interpretation, it would be like people would be envious of people who are successful than they are. Or there are people would try to make ways of putting good man down.
