How to win in office politics?

Okay so this is a forum for politics which I hope includes those at the office and I want to know how to be in a win-win situation at the office. I want to avoid the politics and not be associated with any of the groups. I;m new and I don't want to be included as a member in any of the groups. I want to remain neutral and I am there only to do a job. I don't want to be a part of the rebels who are trying to find new ways to push the boundaries and see how far rules bend before they break. I don't want to be a part of the over-achievers who will take the next promotion by stomping on the backs of their co-worker. I don't smoke and don't have to worry about that group, but they do seem to be the most cohesive. How do I do my job and side step inclusion in any group?

It sounds like you need to start smoking so you can be apart of the most unified group! Just kidding.. I had similar problems when I taught school. I learned to just stay in my room and do my job the best I could and stay out of all the mess. That's about all you can do!

Oh my...I'm already overweight and eating unhealthy according to one of my Dr. Friends who likes to try to impose a healthy eating style on me. Now you wanna add smoking to kill me off sooner! Wish I had those cute little emoticons so I could post the one with little horns breathing fire. Yep. I think avoiding the groups is the best policy because this just seems to eliminate a lot of issues.

It will indeed! lol.. you'll get the emoticons after 250 posts I think... it might be after 500 I can't remember but you'll see them appear on the left side under "myLot code." Here ya go:

If it were me, I'd keep a low profile, and would smile at and think the best of each person.. I would, especially at first, not say much! And even later, still smile and not join or take sides.
