To mylot friends may interested in this subject,
I am come from China, in order to find another better job, I want to improve myself by studying English. I aim to be an interpreter. But I am not really good at English. Except memorizing words and watching TV play in English every day, it seems I have no other approach to improve speaking English. But I really want to make my dream come true.
Recently, I brought interpreter books via internet and began studying by myself. It's not really enough, cause in my opinion, the most effective way to improve language level is let oneself blend in this language enviroment. Since I have no budget to go abroad or go to an English class, I think the best way is find somebody who also want to improve English level.
What's more, My mother language are cantonese and chinese as well, if you want to learn above language and you are good at English, maybe we can teach each other, that would be nice too.

I also like watching TV show more than reading.I usually read text books, but seldom read other kinds of books. Besides, I like English songs.

Watching TV and movies in English is one very good way of learning how English is spoken. Other good ways would be listening to the radio and to audio books read by good English speakers (both British and American). There are also conversation courses which give you a chance to imitate and practice speaking. Unfortunately, the best of these are quite expensive (though you could, of course, always share them with friends and family) but still cheaper than a trip to England or America!
I think that, from what you have written above, your standard of English (in writing, at least) is already very good. I recommend that you listen to as much English as possible, perhaps making sure that you have understood by writing summaries of what you hear (which could be in English or Chinese, of course).

Yeah, I totally agree with you. I always believe that the best way to learn something is not decided by how much money you spend, is depend on how much time you spend on it.

i think by being active in mylot yo can improve your English. i came here for money but then i found that mylot is more than money. i get more here. i can write English sentences easily and give opinion also easier. if you want to learn English more, you can start write something and then ask people here to correct your writing. we know that writing in not only about vocabularies but also grammar. there are many natives here and im sure that they would help you and then beingvyour partner in learning English. i like to learn another language but Cantonese is not too familiar in my society. so English is still my favorite foreign language to learn..:)

Tim kay ley kam yong? Why are you like that? Why do you think like that? I think what you had written is very good. Tenses are correct and you were able to express yourself clearly. Aside from writing English, you should be able to practice your speaking skills as well.
10 years back, I have a new employee who was very good in English and has a good accent. She became my friend and we have an agreement that whenever we see each other, we should speak to each other in English. We wouldn't care who are near us. Even when talking through telephone, we still use English instead of our native tongue. I notice the improvement in just several days.
Practice indeed makes perfect. If you want, I can help you with your English (even though I think you are good already) and you help me with Cantonese because I like to go to Hong Kong again and speak in your language. If you can help me with Mandarin, that will be great, too.

Since English is my native tongue, I can't really learn with you. I would encourage you to learn from as many different sources as possible. Listen to children's stories and shows, they are great for beginners. They may sound childish, but they are slow enough for beginners to learn English. Also, listen to songs in English, they will help you understand the rhythm of the English language. If you plan to move to an English speaking country, focus on that one country because each English speaking country has a different accent and a different mannerisms. The British, Australians, New Zealanders, Canadians, Americans are all a little different. If you try to learn from all these English speaking countries, it may just confuse you. Enjoy learning how to speak English and you will learn in no time!
