How much is too much medication?

I take 9 pills and one liquid every day for all of my medical problems. I start out with 6 in the morning for asthma, high bp, high cholesterol, aspirin, a psych med for my depression and one to counteract reactions I get from some of the meds. If I don't take that one I will wake up during the night with the dryest mouth and practically chocking from it. I have to take Milk of Magnesia every day because of a bowel problem and 3 pills to get to sleep at night. If I don't take the pills at night I will never go to sleep. One time I decided I want to get off the sleeping pills and I was wide awake for 48 hours and not even feeling tired...so I went back on them. I think I take too many meds and I didn't even mention the 2 inhalers I use daily! I'm wondering how many people take a lot of meds or any meds at all. I'm taking too much right? But I can't think of one that I can stop taking without having major problems.

I wouldn't take anything. I believe in herbal remedies, Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ayurvedic medicine. I had arthritis in most of my joints. If the doctor I had way back then had his way I'd be taking meds for that. I quit the doctor, did my own research and haven't had a pain anywhere since. I've had the flu maybe 5-7 times in my whole life, the last time was maybe 5 years ago. I never get colds. My sister is 75 and when she has to go to a doctor for anything, like the specialist she went to for carpal tunnel, and they asked her what medications she took she said none and they looked at her like she's crazy. I used to have bronchitis. I think it's gone now. Doctors are killing people with medications and nobody even cares. Senior citizens are told not to eat salt for various reasons. That's not good. It causes more problems. I believe it's the refining process that's harmful, not the salt. Anyway I could go on but I'll spare you. I just get aggravated because so many unnecessary medications are prescribed so that Big Pharma and the doctors can get richer. The pills you take today will cause problems tomorrow but your doctor will cover it up by saying "Well, at your age..." Sorry, I guess I should take it over to the "ranting about things which annoy me" interest. I do not believe that all doctors or all medicine is bad. Just most of it. And there are natural remedies for asthma, high cholesterol, and high BP as well as many other common ailments. They work and are relatively inexpensive. There are also herbal supplements that help prevent problems before they even start. Just my .02. I hope I haven't offended anyone. No offense was intended.

Since I've taken most of these meds for over ten years there have been times I tried to wean myself off but always got in trouble and ended up in er. My daughter also believes in herbal remedies but none seem to help her so I don't know why she does it. No offence taken. Everyone has their own theories on medicine.

It's unfortunate that you can't wean yourself off them. Maybe you should try a homeopathic MD or a naturopathic MD. I have a doctor that I can go to if I need one. He has a medical & psychiatric degree. He only practices holistic medicine. There are some natural, herbal medicines that can only be obtained by a licensed doctor. And he tells his patients that they need to have a regular MD because he does not practice regular medicine, even though he could. So if I broke my arm I'd have to go elsewhere. I know people who've said that some herbals didn't help them but they were buying low quality products. Some of that stuff is made badly. A study was done and it found that some vitamins/herbal supplements had little to none of what they claimed on the label. I knew someone with acid reflux. I told him to take organic apple cider vinegar every day. 3 weeks later he told me it didn't work. I know this is a known cure for it so I asked what kind of vinegar. He wasn't buying the organic. He changed it and said in one day he stopped having the acid reflux. If you buy low quality or the wrong product it won't help. That's the main reason why people say it doesn't work. I just wish I could help.

I'm sorry to know you have you have take so many pills everyday, have you ever asked your doctor if it is possible to reduce the dosage, the pills will ease your medical problems, but they will also harm your body more or less, you'd better take more exercies and have more vegetables, wish you beter and beter day by day.

Wow, that is quite a bit, I also take meds but overall I decrease the intake by eating lesser, if one pill I will cut it half and consume it. So much is bad for the health too, I do exercise, after that I am happy because I have depression, its bad for me if I always stay at home. Luckily I also have a car to go where I want, like shopping and movies.

Yes, that is too many medications. However, you cannot simply go off them cold turkey.
What you need to be doing is improving your diet and getting more exercise. Are you eating a diet rich in fresh fruits and vegetables? Do you regularly consume oatmeal? Do you choose whole grains?
Light therapy may be affective in helping with your depression (there is some debate over this, but I believe that it is an avenue worth examining). St. John's Wort helps some people with depression.
Chamomile tea is a good sleep aid. Removing distractions such as television from your bedroom can also help.

Wow! That's a lot of meds. There is a saying and it's included in the doctor's oath when he gets his license. "Let food be your medicine and medicine be your food." This was said by Hippocrates himself. He was an ancient Greek physician (born 460 B.C.) and is referred to as "The father of Western medicine." There is so much relevance to this one statement than what many give it. Food is your medicine. When you eat food (especially raw, fresh foods with living enzymes) these foods will help your body fight diseases. That is the function of food other than to sustain life. How much medication is to much? One tablet is to much. Fighting disease with chemicals can never be good. Ultimately, one prescription will interact with another prescription, so you are prescribed something else. It's a dangerous cycle and unnecessary. Getting back to the basics of healthy nutrition is one of the best things you can do for your body and mind.

My son also has asthma. I changed his diet, we are now vegetarians, eat some eggs very little cheese, and eat a lot of fruit and vegetables. His breathing has improved considerably, no longer takes his inhaler (he was using it twice a day morning and night. He is allergic to so many different things, dog dander, cat dander, dust, mold, mildew, and smoke. I thought he would always have to take his medication too, but once I changed his diet and eliminated meat and diary from his diet, his health really improved. If you're interested and you would really like to check into in, I mean if you are serious about your health improving, you can check out the Hippocrates institute in Florida. They offer free periodicals every other month and are a great read. You might also want to check out the Gerson therapy in Mexico and Gabriel Cousens in Colorado. Unfortunately today, our physicians get very little education in nutrition and they will be the first ones to tell you this. It's true, if a Dr. puts you on an 800 calorie diet as they did with my Dad twenty years ago, then you know something isn't quite right.

Not too much as long the doctor prescribed them all. If it is from the doctor then there will be no problem Before prescribing medications usually the doctor will also tell the patient of the side effects of taking it. Like, headache or dizziness, in which case, you will be given another medication for headache and dizziness. It is just funny isn't it. but I believe that if it is prescribed by the doctors, there should be no problem.

Those are quite a lot. Have you checked on each medicine that your taking? Maybe some of them have the same purpose so you can get rid one of them. I remember my dad being prescribed by his doctor with 3-4 tablets. Upon checking on each one, O found out that two of them actually serves the same purpose and so I told my dad to tell his doctor to get rid of one of the tablets. You know sometimes, doctors could be exaggerating with the medicines that they prescribed. 3 pills to get to sleep? Why can't one pill with a higher dosage do it instead?

Your doctor should be aware of all the medicine that you are taking coz you'll never know if some medicine should not be taken with another which may give bad results.
