Wristwatch and the correct hand!

Is there any rule or custom as to in which hand a wristwatch should be wore? As I've lately observed that women usually wear it on the left hand, while men on the right. Everyone from the cinema stars to sports personalities to my next door neighbours. I find this trends everywhere. Where did this rule come from? Is it improper in anyway to not to follow the code? I'm a man and I wear my wristwatches on my left hand. I've been doing this since I was a kid, I guess. So should I change my preference?

I used to wear a wristwatch too know which is my left and my right. I usually forget what is my right and wrong hand. I wear wristwatch on my left hand so that I know that if I pledged my allegiance and it goes heavy it means I have used a wrong hand, and so when I sing a national anthem. (We have to put our right hand to the heart when singing the national anthem). I used to wear my wristwatch to the left, because I need to know my left from right, so when my teacher says.. "Raise your right hand" I know exactly what to raise. No I don't know what is the correct hand. but I know I am correct when I identify my left arm from my right arm

Hi friend, You know i have this doubt from childhood. I used to observe teachers in my school . Mostly people wear the watch on their left hand. But one of my favorite teacher used to wear it on right hand her name is mousami chatterji. so i even tried that, hehe but i felt some what uncomfortable.(all this happened during my 5th class)so after few days i stopped. Then on wards i am wearing the watch on left hand. But as you mentioned I don't know if there is any rule like that. I usually see men and women wearing watch on their left hand.

Are you a lefty? I am a left handed person and since I was a kid, like you, I wear my watch on my left hand. And when I tried wearing it on my right, it feels like there is something wrong. It feels like my right arm is heavy.

Actually before when I was a kid, it was kinda strange since my bone is pressing on my watch so it's kinda painful after an hour of writing but somehow, I got used to it and now I no longer feel that one at all.

No, I'm a right-handed person. In fact I wear my watch on the left so that it doesn't causes problem when I write. Don't you feel strange while writing with the watch on on your left hand?

Eh ya know we already have enough gender rules to deal with. Why not let the watch thing slide? Its not important which wrist you put it on. Wear it however you want. If anyone complains about it, tell them to shut their pie holes.

I love your attitude towards the world dear. True. If I like my watch to be on my left hand, so be it. I do not need the society to tell me its wrong. As long as I'm comfortable with it, who cares what the world has to dictate. Good day!

Normally its the opposite hand. When I met my wife 20 years ago she had it on the right even she was right handed. She told me it would be cool if I would wear it right like her. I did that. It first felt strange. But after 2 weeks I liked it better. Since then I always had it on the right. Same for our four kids. I told several people to switch to the right and most of them like it better.

I didn't know that there was a cool quotient involved. One thing is proven that a woman can change a man. Good day!

most people are right-handed so they wear it on the left so it doesn't get in the way. but i've noticed that some left-handed people also wear it on their left hand. it depends on what's comfortable to you and what's safe or practical. if you wear it on the hand that will get bump and scratched all the time, then watches will not last very long and you'll have to keep buying a new one. i wouldn't worry about what other people think and they shouldn't worry about me. it's my life, it's my watch. i'm not inconveniencing them or causing harm to others.

Neither am I worried about what others think. I just noticed this trends and became curious. Maybe there's a rule to it which I'm unaware of. Now it seems that its all about comfort and preference. I'll keep wearing it on my left hand, as I use my right to write and do most stuffs with. Somehow even then I get a lot of scratches on its dial. Maybe I'm plain clumsy. Good day!

Hi, The Seiko SKX007 SCUBA divers is a big watch and it is heavy. If not for its 200 meter water resistance rating I would not be wearing it while SCUBA diving to 70 feet. Always a time conscious being, I wore it all day and even while sleeping and requiring to wake up periodically during the night, like on a night watch in the beach. Being right handed, it goes in the way when doing the simplest task like eating, writing or wielding any tool or instrument. The natural tendency is to take it off or wear it on the left where it receives less activity. I hate to switch timepieces in the course of the time I am working so I have to dump the lighter model and give it to another person who need it without the necessity of going underwater.

In the United States, people wear their wrist watch on the opposite side in which they write. In other words, if they are right handed, they will wear their wrist watch on their left wrist and visa versa. That means that the wrist watch is out of the way when writing or doing anything with the dominate hand. Nowadays, with cell phones, people use the cell phone to tell the time and fewer people are wearing wrist watches. I haven't worn a wrist watch in 5 years because I take my cell phone with me everywhere I go. Perhaps there are different customs to wearing a wrist watch in your country. All I can say, do what is most convenient for you.

Now that you've mentioned it, I think I've always worn the wristwatch on my left hand because I'm a right-handed person. I write with my right hand. I the convenience of writing without the watch on had lead to this. My observation is a general one and not any country based. Even in English movies I've noticed the trends of women wearing the watch on the left and men on the right. That lead to my curiosity. Anyhow, I think I'll keep wearing it on my left, as I'm used to it now. Yes you're right, the spread of mobile phones has lead to the deterioration of wristwatches, along with several other stuffs. I too leave the house several times without my wristwatch, as I can always rely on my mobile for small necessities. Good day!
