Filipino Time. One I hate most

Philippines

I am not perfect and admits I tend to arrive late in some appointments. This discussion triggers because we are here now in our weekly meeting. About a year ago, we already agreed to start our meeting 830am, for a month we tends to follow the instructions however, after a couple of months it resumed to the usual time 10am. the main reason behind is that the person incharge to preside the meeting arrive very late sometimes 1030am resulting to extended meeting time. Filipino time is one of the bad traits I really hate. Good day mylotters.

It is one of the bad traits of the Filipinos. I don't hate Filipino time, I hate myself if I was late for whatever appointment I had. It is ourselves or someone who got late have to blamed. I all Filipinos discipline themselves to be on time that bad trait will be gone.

Very well said, art! It is a personal attitude and we really need to change it.

I agree with art. It is not the time but the attitude we have. I just remember one of my colleagues have a date with her boyfriend and she let her boyfriend wait for 4 hours. So the boyfriend leaves the meeting place and she saw her boyfriend drunk in the afternoon.

I hate having to wait in a meeting. I see to it that I always come at least 30 minutes before the agreed time coz I do not want to make a bad impression. I feel that a meeting would go on smoothly if both parties come on time.

I think being late for 30 minutes is still tolerable but more than that, it is already irritating. I think one option that the presiding officer will make an advance information if he will arrive late and deputize others that might preside the meeting so it will start on time.

Yes, they should have someone to preside the meeting in case she/he will come late that time. Furthermore, one thing to do is to have an agreement that someone will automatically preside the meeting in case the time started and the presiding officer is not yet around.

That is right! There me be unavoidable circumstances but still, they should designate another person to take his place instead of waiting for him to come. Such waste of time if we would just be sitting and wait for his arrival. We could not always be available after a specified time for a meeting, right?

Oh, this one i hate myself too. I do not think this is really what we are made of. We Filipinos should be more than this. Ah, I know a lot of Pinoy who are hard working and just some who are always late ( because they do not want to wake up early, or sleep on time) also gives those a bad name. I hate to wait for people and I am always early and on time myself. If a meeting is set at 9am, I am sure to be there and not willing to let others wait for me... so i hate it when people do not consider others and come on in on time!

That is right. There are some people that doesn't care about teh time. They did not think that others value their time. Even there are some unavoidable circumstances, they shoudl always anticipate those and they should be informing the others in advance so they will not wait for them to start their meetings.

Hi, Fil time is observed by those who are higher in rank, the most honored guest arrive late than the lower ranks that is why it shall never be solved. If only the leaders make a good example of arriving before anybody else, then we may find a cure to this social malady. I am not one who come late to an appointment, one reason I make is a point to buy an expensive timepiece, one that can track accurately, to mark my time and meet my schedules precisely to the last second.

You got a great point there. It really starts with a good leader. Just like what you said, many leaders came late in their appointment. Just like in our case, the presiding officer is the one who came late.

that is quite good because the time varies but the momentum keeps shifting as time progress and its common too,we can get adapted to it

I guess even there is a time difference in each it will not be a good reason for being late in especially in meetings.

I agree that is one of the most hating attitude that we filipino has. well i always come on time whenever i have some appointments and when sometimes i get late i will report them ahead of time.
• Philippines
10 Dec 12
That was a great move to inform them ahead of time. In our case, the presiding officer does not inform us that he will be late in the meeting in case he will be late which happens all the time.

I agree with you. Not only him but other members too. Sometimes, even the presiding officer is already around, the other members are not yet there to start the meeting. Maybe they are used to start the meeting late because it happens all the time. They might thought that the meeting haven't started yet. Another annoying incident is that some members will not come until they are being notified by the presiding officer that the meeting is already about to start.

Well i think your presiding officer is not acting professional,he must have discipline on his self. There is such quote that time is gold so he must not take it for granted. i hope he will change his attitude towards time.

Ironic isn't it? With the advanced gadgets that we have that helps us keep track of time, there are still Filipinos who prefer coming to an appointment a bit late. I think it's really about attitude. And I think these people have some sort of insecurity. They feel that coming a bit late would make them feel somewhat special - fashionably late. Worse is that even the people who had set the meeting are those who come in late.

I guess you are right. attitude is the main reason for having such trait. There are still others that value time and consider other's time too. I agree with you, if someone tolerate this attitude the other will thought that they are special because you waited for them and we need to teach the lesson. Better leave the area or hide first and let them wait for several minutes so they will know the feeling of waiting for others.

The best thing to do is...walk out. If the presiding person caused the delayed- I think everyone must leave the place to make the person realize his/her mistake. But- he is the owner- well, have patient..lols

The presiding officer is not the owner of the company he is just the head of the admininstration. I think there are no one who got the courage to tell everyone in the meeting to be early during that time. Maybe next time I will open it and ask to follow the set time for the meeting and we should also have the same time in our watch.

I also hate this Filipino trait my friend. I am one of those people who when you said that the meeting is 3pm, i will be there 2:55pm. So, doesn't anyone from you asked the one who presides the meeting, if the 8:30 am will not be honored anymore?

I salute for that trait my friend. That is really a great attitude. Sometimes it is better to get earlier since there are some circumstances that might became hindrants on our appointment like traffic. I think by the next meeting, I will try to open this matter again to have a strict time policy.

Indeed, I really hate it because I'm time conscious and I usually come to an appointment or gimmick or whatsoever, I came on time or before the time but others came so late, . For now, I'm getting like that because of their attitude. :( RAWR

Attitudes are really contagious according to one of the quotation I read. So better have agreat attitude because others might pick it up. Like in your case, you said that you are starting to be like them so better ask them to be on time so you will never get that attitude.

Hi asdomencil! There are times, this kind of attitude is one of the hindrance why most of us are not improving when it comes to quality of life. One thing we should bear in mind are the people who might have other appointment yet because of the delayed transactions end up to nothing. Personally, I am a person who wants to be on time and as much as possible to be early in any event or appointment that I may have. i don't want to be the cause of delay of anything. Even in things which need to be finished on a specified time, I can sacrifice my sleep just to finish the thing. Well, hopefully, this kind of attitude of some will change. Have a nice day!

You are right, each must consider that others might have appointment later. Furthermore, we should learn to value the time of others. I am not perfect since I tend to get late too.

I also hate this trait among Filipinos. However, the reason why it is still pretty dominant here in our country, it is because we always tolerate people who are late. We tend to wait other people just to start with many crowds.

Huh? still the same? I thought this was remedied and solved? Oh well, as far as I know I am always before or on the time in all the meeting that I had attended to when I was in the Philippines. and still been doing same where I am now. This is just too depressing. grrrrr

Yes, there are still problems when it comes to time. I guess one of the reasons for this one is that each individual had their own setting of time in their clock making us everyone different time. Some have advanced by 15 minutes while others are late compared to mine.

Filipinos got it from the Spaniards when the Philippines was colonized by Spain in the 1500's. Well, not all Filipinos are like that. And I think, it must not be called Filipino time because not all Filipinos are like that. It's person's attitude, not a country's attitude.
• Philippines

Yes, not are all late in their appointments. There are still many that value time of others. I think this is considered as country attitude because majority are having the said attitude.

This negative trait was so unbearable years ago when there were no cell phones... imagine waiting for the person without even a guarantee what time he/she will arrive or if that will happen at all... Good thing now, we can easily be informed if we need to wait for 5 or 1 hour... but i get really irritated if the person doesn't even bother to text...

Yes, good thing that there are now cellphones that you can easily track them where they are. However, it is really annoying to wait for long hours.

Well this trait that we need to change.Discipline is really needed to achieve it so we could arrive in exact time or even earlier which is better.
• Philippines
10 Dec 12
Yes, we really need to change this attitude and have a discipline. I think the government is making some ideas to make all the clock in the philippines synchronized so that all of us have the same time being followed. I think this will help a bit because there is already no excuse about the difference in time which has been used by others.
