What A Disappointment

Earlier I rang Mum up and she was telling me all about her tree and the fact she had to go out and buy some more lights as 'I couldn't find the others' lol.
Soon after the telephone call I noticed my tree not looking as bright as usual and, stone me, one set of lights (the icicle ones) have suddenly decided to stop working. Because I put them on the tree first I can't take them off without all the decorations falling off as well..so I've left them..unplugged.
Oh well, at least the LED ones are working but I don't want to buy any more as I can't get the icicle ones off.
At least the effect is subtle but it does annoy me when tree lights pack in like that.
Why does it happen? Do they have a certain shelf life? Are yours working?

its a few years since i have had christmas lights but i remember something about how sometimes only one bulb needs to go for them not to work, depending on the sequence.
there's something i found here, and they suggest checking the bulbs and seeing if they are all screwed in properly. otherwise the testing each section separately is a bit outside my skills experience.

i remember fixing some christmas tree lights once and i did it by replacing one of the bulbs that was like a fuse, instead of being a coloured light it had a green tip, and i replaced that and they worked, but as these things change so quickly i don't know if they are still like that.
otherwise try the plug fuse, as to avoid fires the fuses go quite easily.

Yes, I remember years ago Mum twisting the little light fittings and one was always a different colour to the rest. There is a reason for this which escapes me at present.
As for mine..well, to get at the bulbs I would have to take the icicle casings off and, to be honest, I really can't be bothered. To be honest, I very nearly left them off anyway as they're old and a bit naff-looking.
Next year I'll definitely buy some more!
Any excuse!
Thanks for the link though.

I don't have one at home.
But I love those giant trees on the mall and living trees decorated with lights along the street all over the city.
But the most wonderful sight is the Meralco Building- the biggest electric company building here in our country- wherein the whole building is covered with lights...whooo.

I have been very lucky because I have had my tree and my lights for years now and they are both holding up to expectations. I always check my lights when I take them out of my christmas box and I toss the ones that do not work. I have to say I have not tossed many of them. I can see the frustration you must have. I would just leave them too. I have children so I would be here forever trying to fix the tree. Also my tree never looks the same after we put it up because my children feel they need to rearrange everything everyday. my garlin is half off the tree and in no particular order. Actually it pretty much looks like I threw it up there. Well i hope you solve your problem.

That's what I cannot understand. I tested BOTH sets of lights before putting them on the tree and the icicle ones have decided to stop working after a couple of days of them working fine.
All very odd.
I blame the goblin.
Again.
He's always fiddling with things..breaking them.

The Goblin! I have three of them and one on the way. If mine were to quit working Id blame them too. Maybe there was a short in the wires? Or did one of the lights blow causing the whole strain to go out? Ive seen that before too.

Although It was a blemish on your tree that the icicle ones didn't give off light, seeing that they themselves are transparent, they may after all be accepted as decorations. It is strange they worked only a couple days before packing in.

Funnily enough, the icicles do look more like 'icicles' now that they're not lit up. I won't be putting them up next year though!

I have no christmas tree (yet). I don't know if I will decorate one this year, probably I will. From my experience the lights mostly work 1 year :-( Don't ask me why. Two years ago I had to take out all decoration since they quit right after I decorated the tree. Last year I gave away my tree to the school of my kids plus decoration. Since I was leaving to Africa. Before I left I did decorate a small part of an old fake tree for a daughter who stayed at home (yes home alone). Actually it was the top of a fake tree but it looked great as a small tree as well on a side table. Before I never decorated the christmas tree before Dec. 19 since this was the birthday of a daughter of mine. BTW one year we had a tree without lights as we were staying in Belgium (believe 1995). A big part of Belgium and Holland was under water.. we stole a tree out of the woods (we were up at a hill not able to leave, to go for shopping or go home) and decorated it with what we could find (alu paper, paper, etc). No lights but it was the best tree we ever had.

I'm wondering if the really expensive ones go the same way. I'd be a bit annoyed if I splashed out on some posh ones and they blew as well.

What we do now, after learning the hard way, we test the lights before we put them on the tree, we have two sets of lights, our tree looks dull with just one set of lights, so we have two, they have lasted a few years, but don't you find nowadays nothing seems to last long.

I did test them which is the annoying thing. To be honest, these icicle lights..well, John had them before I came along in 2003 so they've done alright..fortunately we have the LED ones to fall back. They've already stopped 'flashing' and we've only had those 2 years.

Often just one bulb in a strand will go out and certain strands then will stop all together. It can even be that the light gets broken rather than burnt out. Maybe next year will be better.

Since I have a pre-lit tree I have not used lights in a while. But I am thinking that maybe nest year I will look for a new tree without lights on it already. Then I will go and get the LED lights for it. I used to set my tree up with 1500 lights so that I could change the color at will. Maybe its time to do that once again.
