So, in case you guys haven't heard, Metallica has now started their own record label, called Blackened Records. Apparently, they are gong to fore go using any outside help on the releases of their albums.
This means they will have pretty much complete creative freedom, whereas before the label has made them do certain things that they weren't too happy about doing. I think Metallica is one of the only bands that can really bypass the recording industry, and still make huge amounts of money by selling their music directly.

sometimes that's the best way if you want total control of your music.
we had a local band that got signed-i think they made more selling cd's from their trunk at shows than the label ever did for them.

That is so true, the label helps the band with exposure and opening the right doors, but when it comes to money, they really screw you. I've always hated the idea that 4 guys make a record I love, I pay $10 for it, the label gets $9 and the band gets $1.
Then, the band has to pay back every penny that the label spent on them, out of the $1 for each CD! The $9 the label gets is just profit, on the loan that they give the band. The band still pays for everything, just out of that limited amount that the label gives them.
It's really unfair, and it's why I am so against the recording industry.

Yeah, typically they give out some kind of advance to live on, but even that is pretty limited. Also, it has to be paid back, too, haha. But, lots of bands are selling lots of records, but still starving.
That's why live shows are so important for bands these days.

i don't know if that's good news or not.
well then, maybe they really have had a good study of the ins and outs of production so they really know what they're doing, right?
whatever that may be, i'm all for metallica. though i must say, they seem to have lost their "metallica-ness" these past few years.

I would have to disagree, especially with the release of the Beyond Magnetic songs. Those are exactly what Metallica should be, and always was about. Sure, it's not Master of Puppets all over again, but it is Metallica back in force.
I think they have upped their live shows considerably, and the new music they have been offering has been great, with the exception of Lulu, of course.
Now that they have this label, I'm looking forward to hearing some new music.

Complete creative freedom is always good. That means that they'll enjoy making music even more and I think the music will be better because of it.
I don't know if they're the only band, but there are certainly not many bands that are popular and good enough to make huge amounts of money doing it.
