All I Want For Christmas is My Two Front Teeth

I guess some of you knows this song from the Chipmunks. But no, it's not for me. I still have my 2 front teeth. It's for my 2-year old son... I have been very strict on him when it comes to taking care of his teeth. I never tolerated him to even try to taste candies, you know candies especially lollipops and those wrapped sweets. That's really a BIG No-no! When somebody gives him one, I will really get it from him and tell him that it tastes spicy and not good for the babies. But chocolates, yes he did tasted chocolate bars. But I see to it that I let him drink water or gargle after eating, so that it will not stick to his teeth. I was so happy when the day came that he already agreed for me to brush his teeth. We had months of battle over brushing his teeth. So I trained him by letting him observe me first until he already got curious and interested to try on his own. But of course I am not satisfied so I need to do it myself on him. I was so careful with his teeth because I have known from my circle of friends, and even from my very own nephew, of 3 year olds having decayed teeth because of eating candies. Some got them out of sleeping while still having the milk bottle inside their mouth. Imagine they need to wait until they get 6 or 7 years old before they can have them replaced with the permanent teeth. But last week, an incident happen that really made my world on teeth caring collapse. My 2-year old was playing and running and suddenly slipped off and fell on the floor. When he stood up crying I saw blood on his mouth and I started panicking. All the while I thought it was another injury on his lip again. Because he had those for a number of times already. My son is really hyperactive. When I tried to wipe his blood, I noticed some white particles in it and I started to get weak because I know it was his teeth broken into pieces. I started crying with him because I was saddened that my boy is in pain and had broken his teeth. I had him gargled and spit out so he won't be able to swallow the bits. When he was already calmed, I asked him to open his mouth. And there I saw his 2 front/upper teeth was broken. All my efforts of saving his teeth was gone. I really cried because he is too young to have experienced that... But I am still thankful that not all of the teeth were broken and that it has not affected the roots. When I see him smile, I still have this feeling like my heart being crushed inside. I was really hurt with the incident. How I wish I could turn back the time...

I actually haven't heard the Chipmunks' version. Usually we play the Nat King Cole version of this song . Well, like you said, your son's just two, and he won't be having his permanent teeth until after 5-6 years still. I know how you felt when your son fell. That happened to my son also and he actually lost a tooth. I got so worried that he might have swallowed the missing tooth. Well, I guess these things happen to a lot of kids, especially to boys. It's really hard to be a parent, isn't it? We worry too much about their safety.

yes, I've heard a lot of parents saying that it's hard to be a parent. But I didn't expect that it was THIS hard. It just so happened that I was given a very active, but smart kid. It's just sad to see that he had to wait for 4-5 years to have his complete teeth back. So Nat King Cole also had a version of the song? Or maybe he is the original... I really thought it was Chipmunks' because it goes with their cute characters.

Yeah, it's really hard and at times stressful. But it's all worth it. It made me realize the hardship my parents went through. I'm not exactly the saintly child when I was young. I don't think Nat King Cole was the original singer even if the song is a 1940's piece. Well, my mom's a huge fan of Cole, so we got used to hearing a lot of his songs, including Christmas songs.

you are right. It makes us realize that we have also given our parents some headaches on raising us. I also like Cole's songs, especially his Christmas songs... cool!
