Gender confusion?

Australia
December 12, 2012 7:19pm CST
I'm not really here, but while I'm ghosting around talking about our new house I'll haunt a couple of topics. I have noticed over the years a number of mostly Asian members, male, who use profile pics of women, usually Westerners. It always puzzles me, and although I can't quite rationalise my reasoning I instinctively steer clear of them, especially when they approach me with friendship requests. Why women, why Westerners? Is there some gender confusion or do they simply think it will attract more attention? If you're not going to use your own photograph, then why use somebody else's photo, almost certainly without permission, when there are any number of cute and cuddly non-human alternatives around, like mine lol? Any ideas, anyone? Lash

I think some of those are people that will scam you . They used woman picture to lure most men in . A guy was explaining something like that on his blog on how to get people to follow you are buy what you are selling . He say he is a guy and he used female picture to do that most time and that is what most people do when they trying to spam , steal your identity . This is not my photo but I like it and I am a woman and its free to used .

On other sites I used my real profile pic but since I am mainly here for discussion and nothing personal , I rather used a female that look similar to me . The lest I can put online the better in my opinion

If this were a dating site the concept of scam would be foremost in my mind, but this is the Lot, and their posts aren't scams as far as I can see. Lash

You mean you haven't gotten messages from random people telling you to visit their website so you can make lots of money?

I am really not sure, but maybe they would just like to keep their identity hidden, and yes to either confuse or they just really appreciate the beauty of others. I had my own pic on my avatar, but when my husband saw it, he wasn't him. He thought that I must be in a chatting site of some sort. So I had to replace it with just my name.

Our user names are mostly enough to hide our identity if we want to. Why choose another person's identity, it doesn't make sense? Lash

Well, maybe they just feel that they need to place a very interesting looking picture to catch attention.

It puzzles me as well because I like knowing who I am talking to. My picture is actually a picture of me, I am no longer much of a red-head anymore, but that's definitely me. I want people to feel like they are talking to a person. I don't need someone's name, but as long as I know that you are a human being.

You are definitely right that the pictures of females has been something that has brought me a lot of confusion during the time that I've been a mylot member. For me, I actually use a picture of myself. Why do I do that when there are so many people here that don't? Well, it is because of the fact that I'm myself whether I'm on the computer or you encounter me in real life, so for that reason I really don't feel like I have anything to hide.

Good observation! I wasn't aware of that. I think you were right about them wanting to attract attention. I used to use a profile picture of a celebrity for years but then I decided to use my own instead. It's safer and more authentic-looking.

What you have observed has gotten me thinking as to why indeed? I am also Asian, but I would never put a picture of someone else in my profile. Maybe they're scared to show who they really are? I have a gay friend and on his Facebook profile he places pictures of his favorite Korean singers. But that is just to show that he loves them and that he's a fan. But for men placing women pics, I don't know. I don't have the answer nor can I come up with a logical one.

I am not included in Asian members that you are talking about. I am the real pic in my profile picture. I do not want all Mylotters to be confuse. I do not like to be hidden. Most of Mylotters are hiding there pics. I do know why not show a real pic.

I simply believe that they would have their own personal reasons but I would doubt if they are meant to deceive anyone here. To me, they could just simply be that they have personal admiration of the pictured model or celebrity. The other reasons I could think of would be that they feel that their personal photograph is not good enough, while the pictures of some animals or cartoon characters may not be to their liking. In my country, this sort of tactic is very common in the cyber gaming community where male players will create female profiles to seek special favors to theft of gaming accounts. Whatever it is, it serves as a reminder how people can be in the cyber community and that we should be constantly on our guard against them. One could not afford to be careless.

I don't necessarily see any sinister reason behind it, but I simply can't understand what motivation they could have. Asian versions of sexism come to mind, but I can't really expand that thought into anything logical either. Lash

I see a lot of the same thing in reverse in other discussion sites. Usually young, American females who are obsessed with Japanese and Korean media. They will have an avatar of some male actor/singer from one of those places. When ever someone sends a request, I look in the discussions they've started and responses they've made to determine if I'm interested in adding them. It could be some who is bigendered, genderqueer or whatever or like you said trying to attract attention. I'm thinking most likely the last one. Trust your instincts.

Perhaps it's some sort of postmodern gender statement. Lash

Actually for me,I think that is OK and I can accept that, because in this anonymous world people tend to be another people or someone they would love to,but as for me,I usually use some scene pictures as my image.

Funny that you mention it. I never notived. Or should I say 'paid attention'? But sure enough I stay away from pos(t)ers that seem to be 'fishy' as well.

Well, in my facebook account I am using my real picture. I am not into posting anyones' photo on my behalf. Here in mylot, I used my own photo then as an avatar but change it to my pet's photo... It is because I notice that many mylotters are using any type of avatar too.

isn't it better to have an anime character picture as prof pic? like me! hahahahaha

Anime characters are fine, and at least yours is gender appropriate. I'm using a film character at the moment, again gender appropriate. It's the gender confusion which puzzles me. Lash

Yes I did notice that you were not here. I am not really here either! This area has amazed me often too. I have seen it many times here on this site as well as other sites as well where people not only have different genders in their avatars, but also a woman's names as their profile name. I am a member at another site (although no longer active there) where there was a lady called Catherine. Complete with female picure (beautiful looking lady of course) I always thought the person was a female. Until I signed them up to a progam that I was promoting at the time and discovered that they had signed up as Joseph! Clearly not a female name! I have no understanding of why people hide behind images of other people. I am who I am and am proud to stand up for what I believe with a public image that is really me. Maybe these people are ashamed of who they really are?

I have seen that too, I am not sure why they do it but it has confused me a few times when talking with them here. I will automatically think its a woman (due to the picture) I am talking with and then they will say something about liking a woman and I check their profile and realize their a male! No idea, you got me on this one. Lol.

I noticed it too. I guess they just want the attention, I mean can you blame them for having a beautiful girl on their profiles? No, not really. Some just want the attention and want to get a lot of profile views. Many years ago, there was a rumor going a round saying that a picture of a beautiful girl would attract many friend requests....giving somebody the change to spam other members and others believe that posing or having pics of hot women would give them many responses to their discussions.

No it is really no issue for me. I do not take things too personally when it comes to internet and socializing with people. They do not bother me at all. Thanks for sharing and have a wonderful day ahead.
