Its very difficult to trust someone and when it comes for the online relationships be it professional or personal! Time can only prove the genunity but initially its difficult to judge someone and open your cards! Friends can you suggest and share some of the tested methods?

It takes time and sincerity. And if the person doesn't trust you, don't be disappointed, understand the person and put your shoes in that person. For me, I'm sincere in every words that I write and there are people who can feel that who bounds to become your friend in time.

You are right, there is a lot things that you miss out on to express being genuine. You don't see their body language, facial expression or their tonality. I think that certain things should be avoided while doing this. I think that avoiding sarcasm is a good idea. If you want to use it make sure you make it obvious otherwise it is hard to tell when people are being serious or not and people can be offended if they take it the wrong way. Otherwise, being open and being enthusiastic and taking an interest in the person is always a good sign of being genuine. But make sure you talk about things you are interested in and not just bring up topics that they might like but you don't. For example, if you know they like shopping and you bring it up, and if you don't like it yourself and have nothing to follow it up on it makes the conversation seem forced. Hope that helps.

Not sure that you can totally trust someone online. Mainly because you can't totally trust the internet. I think to stay friendly but be careful to protect your privacy.
