I just caught my cat jumping up on the counter going to the top of my refrigerator where he is not allowed. I have 2 plants up there and a number of other things. Every time I catch him I yell at him and shake my finger at him of course he pays no attention to me and goes on his way. About ten minutes ago I heard him jump on the counter and knew he was heading for the refrigerator. As I yelled at him and pointed my finger at him he stood there and got the most verbal I have ever heard him and he just stood there mewing back at me for a minute or so. This is the first time he's ever done that and I think he's sick of me telling him what to do. Does your cat talk back at you when you reprimand him/her? Do you think he was telling me off finally?

Our cat does this, she is 19 years old now bless her and has become extremely vocal, and will let you know what she wants, night and day! I am a night owl and I can hear her being noisy downstairs as to say oi, you've turned the fire off and the light out and I am still down here if you please! You can almost voice what they are saying to you, it's funny how they have different noises. And yes she does answer back when she is being told off! She has to have the final answer! I know in cat years she is much older than me and I guess she is telling me to respect her now she's old!

Oh my goodness your cat is 19 years old.. That is the oldest of pets I have seen till now. She must be one experienced cat. I am happy to hear from you wolfie. Thanks for sharing and have a wonderful day ahead.

Thank you, we got her from an animal sanctuary when I was 25, I am now 41 and she was three when we got her. We learnt from the sanctuary that the woman who gave her up threatened to let Meg (the cat) loose if the sanctuary didn't rehome her! Well Meg is thoroughly loved and spoilt that is why she has lasted so long, bless her, she still rules the house with her being a right madam and a squawker!

Rehomed animals is the only way to go. They need someone to love and take care of them. I would never get a pet from a pet store....yes that is very old for a cat you must take very good care of her.

I have four cats--two girls and two boys. All four cats are vocal and will "talk" to us, but the older female (the princess of the house) LOVES to talk back when she is getting scolded for something. In fact, she often scolds us! If someone isn't petting her, or feeding her, fast enough, or making a noise she doesn't like, or not sitting in the proper seat, or anything else that is unacceptable to her, she will march up to the person and chatter away! It is very funny and very cute. As for the refrigerator battle I would give that up. Cats love to get as high as they can, and the top of the fridge can be warm, too. Every cat I have had who can make it up there ends up there at least once a day...

I think I'm going to have to take everything off the top of my refrigerator and see if he still wants to go up there. I think it's my plants that draw hime there and I have no idea where I would put them since I live in a very small apartment.

We don't bother to keep any plants in the house any more--my cats love to eat them, rip them up, dig up the dirt, knock them over...it's just not worth the hassle! Let us know if your cat still goes up to the top of the fridge once the plants are gone...and be prepared for him to talk back to you even more if he is upset that you moved his plants!

I have three Siamese, Murphy who is 19, and Willy and Khuay who are 4 years old. They always are talking back to me. Murphy is the most vocal of the three, and she will yowl at me at any time she pleases. I also have a Maine Koon cat that is 12 years old. She doesn't talk much, but if she doesn't like what you're telling her she'll haul off and swat at you with a hard right swat! The problem with cats is that they prefer to be in high spots. It's their nature so the refrigerator is the highest spot in the house so of course they are going to want to perch up there. It stems from their wild stage before humans domesticated them. They would be up in trees watching for possible prey and also to be safe from their enemies like wild dogs and other animals that couldn't climb trees. I am sure he was "educating" you about why he likes sitting on top of the fridge and that you should know those things. Also it is so much warmer on top of the fridge as heat rises and he was cold! I have the same problem with my four cats and have finally given up and let them have the fridge top because the battle was destined to be a losing one!

Maine Co!!! are smart, beautiful cats and I would love to own one but I'm stickiing with my 2 guys for now. I've decided that I've lost the war and today am taking everything off my refrigerator. Where I'll put the things up there is another matter since my apt. is so small. I couldn't put the whole name of what your cat is. The Cune word is not allowed

Don't look at it as losing the war, just look at it as a strategic retreat! There are so many times with cats that you have to give up and let them have their way...sometimes it is the only way to keep peace in the house. With small space you don't have too many options for giving the cats high places to roost. I kind of have that problem with my place, I have a screened in patio for the cats except that I have a ton of repairs to do to it before I can allow them out on it again. I don't have room in the house for a cat tree, so they get to use the top of the fridge and the bookcases...it's either that or have them roosting on the top shelf of the closet! That doesn't work too well because they rearrange things to suit them and most of the stuff ends up on the floor. I can't believe some of the restrictions the Lot has on the words. That is why I use Maine Koon. I totally understand the reasons because of past history, but it is interesting trying to find replacement spellings for the proper names.

My cats can be vocal. My boy will sometimes sass me a little when I tell him to "leave it" or snap my fingers at him, but he will generally listen. I don't have to raise my voice; I often don't even have to speak to get my point across. A snap of the fingers can be effective in reminding the culprit (and they do know who I am reprimanding) that I can see him or her and that he/she knows that the action is not appropriate. My cats have a lot of freedom, but there are a few things that are off limits to them. For instance, they are currently not permitted in the bathroom (especially not unsupervised), because there is a repair that needs to be made in there.

I don't allow my cats in the bathroom either. I don't want them to get into the toilet and get hair all over the place.

They are usually allowed in, but this new place has a few repairs that need made. One of them is in the bathroom, so they've been barred from that room for now for safety's sake. They have enough room without going into the bathroom, but it still breaks their little kitty hearts that Mommy doesn't want for them to go in. They like playing in the bathtub.

I guess it exploded. Animals have a piece of human's intelligence and a piece of emotion too. Funny thing to think, to know what your cat said to you! I've got a cat that was 10 years old but it passed away last year, now I've got again a Black Cat less one year old. If I do what you did to yours, haha.. maybe it'll cast a curse to me!

I'm sorry you lost your cat. I lost one last year too after having him for 4 years. I waited awhile to get another one and I ended up getting 2...and I love them.

Haha your cat is so cute ! I don't know why cats loves to stay at the top of the refrigerator. That is their favorite place. I haven't heard my cat answering me back but he keeps meowing if something he wants to tell or ask and also will keep on following me. with this gesture i then cuddles him. Cats are just the cutest creature.

I think cats make the best pets even though they can be naughty sometimes they basically take care of themselves and are just looking for love.

Our new cat would sometimes talk back whenever I talk to him, can't really say what he wants to mean though. I'm assuming that most of the time he's just trying to tell me to shut up or something.

Hi ctryhnny, My cat doesn't talk back to me but she just refuses to pay any attention to what I want her to do. She will just look at me as if saying, "this is my house and I'll do what I want - you can stay here as long as you pay the mortgage and feed me - and keep my litter box clean of course". I have a feeling that your cat was just letting you know who's boss in the house lol! I had another cat, until just a few years ago, and he would often tell me off. Cats are very independent creatures. Blessings.

I would have loved it if our cats did that to us.Yur cat surely knows who is stronger! I do not have cats now although we had many of them earlier. But several stray ones visit us and make their home. I do not feed them and so wonder what it is that they come here for.

Hahaha that is actually cute. I am thinking he was trying to explain something to you in his own way. I wonder what he was saying though. My cat doesn't talk back but she meows at me when I try to pick her up at times if she is too comfy where she is.

Hi friend, good to hear about this, i am sure you are very much happy with this incident, so only you created a topic here. I don't have a pet cat, but a cat from my neighborhood place always comes to my house and my kids will enjoy a lot while playing with it. The cat also enjoy with playing and express its happiness with the mewing sound

If your allowing a ferral cat into your home please be careful with your kids. It could have some kind of disease that would be transmitted to them. Maybe you should be thinking about getting a kitty of your own.
