Breastfeeding beyond a year old...

I breastfed all six of my kids. The least amount of time I breast fed was 10 months, and the longest I breastfed was twenty six months. Both my daughters breastfed and I am very proud of them for having done so, especially in today's society. My oldest daughter is still breastfeeding her son and plans to continue to breastfeed him until he is at least two years old. Her plan is to let him self wean.
Society has changed a lot. Back in the pioneer days, the majority of women did breastfeed their little ones. They couldn't just run to the store, because well Piggly Wiggly had not yet been invented, they used horse and buggy. Now it was nothing to breastfeed your child, one of the most natural things you can do.
I wonder why so many people have such a problem with breastfeeding moms these days. We see puppies, kittens, cows, and other animals feed their babies from their breast and think "how cute, adorable, what have you" but the minute a woman is breastfeeding it becomes "gross!" Something is wrong with that statement. Your ideas? Thoughts?

People react as though it's something shameful and that is a huge problem. Women are already vulnerable and raw in the postpartum period. They don't need to be worrying about the scorning looks from strangers when baby needs to eat. I have four kids and I remember being terrified about nursing in public with my first baby. I did get nasty looks and eventually, I stopped caring. If someone was going to act nasty with me for nourishing my child with the best possible food for their body, then forget them!
