Over the past few days at Mylot, lots of people have been talking about the recent tragedy at the elementary school in Connecticut. First of all, I want to give my respect to the community there who is supporting the survivors and the families of those who were killed.
Every time the U.S. experiences something like this, people go back to the Second Amendment right to bear arms and question its use in today's society. Others question the way our society is going and say that it isn't the fault of the guns, but of the people who have the desire to commit these massacres.
The left tends to argue about the second amendment and say that there should be more restrictions placed on gun ownership and the types of guns that can be purchased. The right tends to say it's not the guns but that we need to "bring God back" into the public sphere since it is going downhill.
Both of these freedoms are protected by the Bill of Rights.
Amendment I
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.
Amendment II
A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.
It seems to me that these will forever be at each other!

Not saying any one Amendment is more important than another, but it seems the first amendment is pretty important as it allows people in the United States to have this conversation.
