It's the opening weekend for the new Hobbit movie, and I've really been looking forward to seeing this one. I loved the LOTR movies, and I remember reading the Hobbit back in school, plus, this time there is a new style to the cameras. The digital cameras they used for it work at 48 frames per second, against the usual 24 fps for many digital movies, and 29fps for TV.
And it looked great. Using this new style of video, it looks very realistic, it takes away from the more flat, fictional look of a lot of movies. It's something you really do need to see, to understand. I'm a bit back and forth with it, because it makes everything look so real, but because of that, the extras in the background look more like extra actors then part of the background of the story... but it's just the beginning of this style, and I hope this pushes it into Hollywood.
But the movie, is SO MUCH FUN! It's a great storyline, you really feel for the characters, the bad guys are so bad (the girl I was watching it with was just shrieking at the antagonists) and the good guys are so fun... you really feel like they're in danger, and you're really rooting for them. But the biggest part, was the action scenes... Whoa! So cool to watch! It's a part that this new 48fps really really makes a difference. When there's a lot of action going on, nothing is blurred, you see it so much better, and you feel like you're really there... plus they were also ultra cool.
I really recommend seeing this one, and I don't think it'll make much of a difference if you see it in 2D or 3D, or if you see it on a normal screen or some ultra screen, it's hard for you to go wrong, with this great movie.

I'm looking forward to watch this movie. I'm planning to watch it this week but I haven't read the book yet. Do you think I should read the book first. Thank you for this review. Im waiting for a review of the movie because i dont want to waste my money but by reading your comments, I can see that the movie is great.

Books are always better then movies, every time. I don't think I've ever heard someone say, "That movie was better then the book!". I always recommend seeing the movie first, then reading the book, because if you read the book first, then you're always going to be let down for the movie, even a great one like the Hobbit. If you watch the movie first, then the movie will be great, and the book will be even better!

I have seen it twice! I went to the midnight showing with some friends and then I went to see it again yesterday with my family. I plan on seeing it again sometime in the near future in 3D. I loved it.
I think it's the best adaptation of The Hobbit that I could have asked for. It's not as light as the book was, but it's definitely lighter in tone than The Lord of the Rings. And it's also not just an adaptation of the Hobbit itself, but also an adaptation of the extended Lord of the Rings mythology included in the the Appendix of Lord of the Rings. Which is what really excites me because including those things in the Hobbit helped really capture the scope of the world Tolkien built.
I'll be eagerly handing over my money for the next two installments as well. Better start making my Galadriel costume!

I don't believe so. Though I've heard some theaters offer it in standard 24fps, and some in the 48fps it was filmed in.

Having read these books of Tolkien,I enjoyed the LOTR trilogy as they arrived in cinema and on DVD,so will be looking forward to seeing this "Prequel"..I'm just curious as to how they will manage to break up this shorter story into movie thirds and keep the momentum going for the next 2 years for the respective releases..

I went along last night for a 3D showing in my nearest cinema..So,it's back to business as usual in Middle Earth! The 3D fx were good..though I think I might check out a 2D showing sometime,as those glasses darken the image..The location shots would make you consider a visit to NZ,though the Helicopter tours required at the other end to see them might be an expensive extra!
