I'm aware of there being a series of books featuring Man of Action "Jack Reacher"..however,I've yet to pick one of them up to read one..
And being recently back from a Thanksgiving visit to the US,having been to the cinema a few times in that time and seen the trailer,I'm now aware "The Cruiser" has the starring role in what may be the first in a series of "Reacher" Movies..
Have you read the books? Would the character appeal to your interests? Would you go to see the Movie,or have an opinion on the Casting?

I don't like Tom Cruise but do have this movie on my list to see from Netflix whenever it becomes available and out on DVD. I wasn't aware there was a series of books and by the reviews of this movie so far I guess we in for a few of them being made into movies and portrayed by Tom.

TC did indeed do the MI Movies..a new direction for him in this movie,then..
I haven't yet heard if this new Movie is an adaptation of one of the books or a completely new screenplay..

I heard that Lee Child (the author of the Jack Reacher books) actually approve of Tom Cruise being cast in the title role. He said Cruise may not be as "physically overwhelming" as the character in the book but his persona in the movie makes up for the slight shortcoming.

That's where this discussion came from..I read a weekend magazine supplement about the choice..Child approves of the input TC was bringing to fleshing out the character, despite the differences..
Well,We've accepted a Blond Bond after many years of Dark haired actors in the role, and this IS Reacher's first movie outing..

With Cruise in the title role, more tickets will be sold and there is a greater chance of the movie being a success. A successful first movie could mean a sequel which would put more money into Child's pockets.

That seems to be the reasoning behind this choice of Casting for the movie..regardless of how closely (or not) the screen presence of the lead character deviates from that described in the books..

Having read more than 10 of the Jack Reacher novels, I can't see Tom Cruise as Reacher. Reacher is supposed to be large and imposing. Cruise is a shrimp. He even looks small in the trailers. The least they could have done is stick him on a box to make him appear to be taller.
In the latter half of the '90's they made 4 movies using the character to Sean Dillon from the series of novels bu Jack Higgins. I saw one of them but it took me about 30 minutes to realize what I was watching. In the books Dillon has almost white hair and id Irish. The movie starred Rob Lowe, with his dark hair and non-Irish accent. The least they could have done is have him fake an Irish accent. Since Dillon is a former IRA hit man who is working for the British, being Irish is a fundamental point of the character. Just as Reacher should be large.
That they made 4 Dillon movies is probably more based on Higgins success as an author than the the success of the movies. Several other books by Higgins have been made into movies with "The Eagle has Landed" probably being the most noteworthy. Perhaps is Cruise were to play Sean Dillon (heaven forbid), there would be more than 4 Dillon movies. At least I could expect Cruise to do an Irish accent.
Perhaps what irks me more about Cruise playing Reacher, is that I've grown to dislike Cruise. He's become conceited as shown by how he lectured Matt Lauer about psychology. There was also the image of him jumping up and down on Oprah's couch.

From those Higgins/Dillon movies You could nearly hear someone in the background shouting "WORK with Me Here,I know what I'm doing...!"
As for TC,I figure as long as He's entertaining in the part, and the Author is happy with what's being done with his character,it can't be all bad..

Going from comments on the IMDB message boards, there have been several changes in the transfer to the movie script from the book, with characters omitted or combined and story elements changed..Having not yet read the book to criticize the changes,I think the story as played went well, though there were a few gaps where it wasn't clear what some people were doing and why..

This movies is based on the 9th book in the Reacher series. The book's story takes place in a small city in Indiana but the movie shifts it to Pittsburgh. (They probably got a sweetheart deal from the city to film there.) I guess shifting the city goes with shrinking Reacher's size by about a foot.

I've heard that a few times, that location filming can be changed as a result of moviemaking tax breaks...case in point was the recent "Looper" movie..Bruce Willis ends up in China, despite trying to learn French in his younger years!

I'm unaware that Jack Reacher is a character from a book so if I were to watch the movie, it'll be as a movie and I won't be affected by how Jack Reacher is supposed to be from the book.
I've seen the trailer and I thought that it's pretty action pack and I like to watch that kind of movie. I would probably watch it even though I'm not such a big fan of Tom Cruise.
The thing is with me, I don't dislike any actors or actresses. Even if I don't like the actors or actresses in the movie, if I think the movie has a good plot and storyline, I will still watch the movie.

That's what I'm interested in seeing, whether the Movie will work as an entertaining show in its own right,or get hit by fans of the books who'd disagree with the Author's seal of approval on the Actor chosen..

I love Tom Cruise..although i have no idea who Jack Reacher is... I can't wait to see this movie, since it is already showing and it had great reviews and ratings.. The synopsis says 5 random victims, but they are not so random are they? It seems interesting enough..

From the books,He's a highly trained former soldier now living a nomadic life in the US,who,While American, has spent much of his life growing up on Army bases around the world and is now trying to connect with his Country...

My bad for trying to give a synopsis of the character from the lofty position of one book read...

Reacher didn't really grow up on army bases. He was an MP in the army and rose to the rank of major before being busted down to captain by a commanding officer. He leaves the army and wanders about America but I don't think he's really trying to connect to anything. He usually travels by hitch hiking or bus and carries little with him other than a toothbrush. Most of the time, as he travels, he runs into situations that need his ability to correct them.

I have heard about the film coming out and once I see the trailers, if it looks good, I will more than likely go to see it. However, I didn't actualy realise it was a set of books to be honest!

I would have seen some of the books on airport bookshop shelves on my recent trip, which may have brought the franchise to mind on seeing the trailer!
